i was given to you when you went into the navy, so that you would never lack for companionship,” one whispers. another says, “i was your first book of poems, given to you before you learned to love poetry.” and a third, “i was the book that made history so attractive to you.” perhaps the greatest pleasure of re-organizing my books are the surprises or better said, reunions that occur. during my latest book-cleaning adventure, i found one that had fallen behind the shelf: “tales of edgar allan poe.” not an unusual title, but the words written on the first page made it very special: “with love from mom and dad, christmas 1965.” whats this? a book on the physics of lasers(激光). it is filled with mathematical statements, and i had bought it at a library sale when i was 12, not long after the laser had been invented. i couldnt understand a bit of it, but i did learn what “laser” meant. what i end up with when i empty my bookshelves is a cross-section (横剖面) of my personal history. its like a road cut where one sees all the layers of rock going back through time to the beginning of the simplest life forms. the books ive read and kept are not just old friends. they are my rsum.【小题1】what could be said about the author? ahe is too busy to tidy up his bookshelves.bhe considers his books treasured possessions.che has made a lot of notes in his books.dhe is a lover of science books.【小题2】by saying that his books have voices, the author means _ . athey bring back happy memoriesbthey are recorded in human voicecthey say a lot about human historydthey offer good topics for discussion【小题3】what does the author enjoy most from re-organizing his books? afinding some missing books.bputting books in good order.clearning something new from the books.drediscovering interesting stories behind some books.【小题4】the underlined word “rsum” in the last paragraph probably means _. apersonal historybprecious notescgood companion dsimple life formsbpeople diet to look more attractivefish diet to avoid being beaten up,thrown out of their social group, and getting eaten as a resultthat is the fascinating conclusion of the latest research into fish behavior by a team of australian scientists the research team have discovered that subordinate(低一等的) fish voluntarily diet to avoid challenging their larger competitorsin studying gobies we noticed that only the largest two individuals,a male and female, had breeding(繁殖)rights within the group, explains marian wongall other group members are nonbreeding females, each being 5-10% smaller than its next largest competitorwe wanted to find out how they maintain this precise size separation the reason for the size difference was easy to seeonce a subordinate fish grows to within 5-10% of the size of its larger competitor,it causes a fight which usually ends in the smaller goby being driven away from the groupmore often than not,the evicted fish is then eaten up it appeared that the smaller fish were keeping themselves small in order to avoid challenging the boss fishwhether they did so voluntarily,by restraining how much they ate,was not clearthe research team decided to do an experimentthey tried to fatten up some of the subordinate gobies to see what happenedto their surprise, the gobies simply refused the extra food they were offered, clearly preferring to remain small and avoid fights, over having a feast the discovery challenges the traditional scientific view of how boss individuals keep their position in a grouppreviously it was thought that large individuals simply used their weight and size to threaten their subordinates and take more of the food for themselves,so keeping their competitors small while the habits of gobies may seem a little mysterious, drwong explains that understanding the relationships between boss and subordinate animals is important to understand how hierarchical(等级的)societies remain stable the research has proved the fact that voluntary dieting is a habit far from exclusive to humansas yet,we lack a complete understanding of how widespread the voluntary reduction of food intake is in nature, the researchers commentdata on human dieting suggests that, while humans generally diet to improve health or increase attractiveness, rarely does it improve long-term health and males regularly prefer females that are fatter than the females own ideal 【小题1】when a goby grows to within 5-10% of the size of its larger competitor,it _ aleaves the group itselfbhas breeding rights ceats its competitordfaces danger【小题2】the underlined words the evicted fish in paragraph 3 refer to _ athe fish beaten up bthe fish driven away cthe fish found outdthe fish fattened up 【小题3】the experiment showed that the smaller fish _ afought over a feast bpreferred some extra foodcchallenged the boss fishdwent on diet willingly 【小题4】what is the text mainly about?
