The general trained his men by his precise and persistent system of drill. That is why the word means a stickler for detailed discipline. 2. braille: Louis Braille (1809-1852) ,himself a blind man, once heard of a French Army captain who had devised a system of raised dots and dashes by which his order could be read by the fingers in the dark. It was from this beginning that he developed such a system of printing and writing for the blind. 3. bobby: this is from the pet form of the name of Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), who made certain reforms in the London police system. It has almost driven out the synonymous slang word peeler. 4. silhouette; Etienne de Silhouette (1709-1767) , French minister of fianc, attempted to reduce French finance to its simplest form. The portraits were the simplest form. So, in a spirit of ridicule, the name of the person was applied to this kind of portraits. 5. pantaloon: this, in the plural an old fashioned name for trousers, derives ultimately from Italian Pantalone, the name of a silly Venetian of early Italian comedy who wore such close-fitting nether coverings. 6. pompadour: this way of doing a womans hair was named for its inventor Marquise de Pompadour, mistress of King Louis XV of France. The meaning of this word has now even extended in American English to refer to a mans hairdo in which the hair is brushed up high from the forehead. 7. derrick: in the early 17th century there was a famous London hangman by the name of Derrick which was soon applied to the gallows that he used. Our modern hoisting apparatus was named so because of its likeness to the gallows. 8. nicotine; Jean Nicot, while serving as French ambassador to Lisbon, bought some seeds of a strange plant that had come over from America. In this fashion he introduced tobacco to France. His own name, therefore, was finally used as the basis of this poisonous drug in tobacco. 9. fahrenheit: in the early years of the 18th century, Gabriel D. Fahrenheit invented the scale that is widely used today and that bears his name. Fahrenheit was a German physicist, but strangely enough the Germans use the centigrade thermometer, calling it Celsius after its Swedish inventor!10. tantalus: this word goes back to the god Tantalus in ancient Greek mythology who, having revealed the secrets of his father Zeus, received an unusual punishment. He as plunged up to his chin in water and the finest fruits dangled from a tree over his head, but both were withdrawn from him whenever he tried to drink the one or taste the other. Hence the present meaning of tantalus: spirit-stand in which decanters are locked up but visible. Exercise XI1.Canary Islands (地名) 2. Goth (民族名) 3. Gypsy (民族名) 4. Celluloid (商标名) 5. Turkey (国家名) 6.
