湖北省黄石市2014高考英语阅读理解训练题(12)及答案 “the worlds oceans are slowly getting more acidic(酸的),” say scientists. the researchers from california report that the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.the lowering of the waters ph value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat to current ocean life if it continues, they warn. ken caldeira and michael wickett, from the lawrence livermore national laboratory, report their concerns in the journal nature. increasing use of oil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater. once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid. scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century.these researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change. “this level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing co2 into the atmosphere,” said dr caldeira. and we predict the amount of future acidity will be greater than anything we have seen over the last several hundred million years.however, it is not absolutely clear what that means for ocean life. most organisms live near the surface, where the greatest ph change would be expected to occur, but deepocean life forms may be more sensitive to ph changes. coral reefs and other organisms whose shells contain calcium carbonate(碳酸钙) may be particularly affected if the waters acidity levels keep going up, the team predict. they could find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower ph.in recent years some people have suggested storing carbon dioxide from power station in the deep ocean as a way of dealing with global warming. but dr caldeira said that such a strategy should now be reconsidered. “previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thingbecause in releasing co2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet, and when co2 is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.”17. the ocean is becoming more acidic due to_.a. the lower water ph valueb. the warming atmospherec. the higher level of co2 in the aird. the increasing use of oil fuels18. according to dr caldeira, _.a. ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thingb. more oil fuels will be used in the near futurec. scientists may predict climate changes with computer modelsd. the future situation of the amount of acidity is extremely serious19. if the waters acidity level keeps rising, _. a. ocean life whose structures contain calcium carbonate may be affectedb. the waters ph value will become higher and higherc. organisms living near the surface are more sensitive to ph changesd. some disastrous events will occur more often than before20. most experts once believed storing carbon dioxide in the ocean might disagree many american households contain a fish tank, whose average size is less than 10 gallonsyet a study comparing the behavior of common freshwater fish found that those kept in such small tanks were more aggressive than those in larger ones more likely to fight. “if people kept dogs in these conditions, theyd be put in prison,” said the author, ronald oldfield“in larger tanks, the fish were not in continuous eyesight of each otherthey were swimming around, checking everything out rather than beating each other,”he added“its something we should think about” the study consisted of two experimentsin one, droldfield tested the effects of overcrowdlng by keeping tank size constant(不变)while increasing the number of fishin the other,he tested environment by placing three fish in tanks of different sizes he then recorded their behavior at least two hours after feeding,to eliminate(排除)competitive behaviors related to food. while aggression seemed to remain constant regardless of the number of fish in a tank, it dropped off considerably once the fish were placed in a l00-gallon tank with several plants and rocks to form shelters the findings confirmed what he found when observing midas in the wild“if vou go out and observe these fish swimming in a river,”he said,“theyre not aggressive at all。really”this conclusion is not news to justin muir, the owner of a fish tank business “more volume of water is always betterit keeps the fish healthier, and the tank is more stable”5we can conclude from the study that athe fish in small rivers are more likely to fight than those in larger ones bif you keep fish in tanks of less than 10 gallons, youll be put into prison cpeople havent paid enough attention to the feeling of fish in smaller tanks dthe fish in the wild are more aggressive than those kept in tanks6how was the first experiment performed? aby putting more and more fish in the same tank bby putting fish in tanks of different sizes cby putting some food to test the behavior of fish dby putting fish in a tank with plants and rocks7the two experiments prove that afood competition results in the aggressive behavior of fish bfish become more aggressive as more fish are put into a tank ccrowding is the main cause of the aggressive behavior of fish dfish become less aggressive when placed in a 100-gallon tank8the best title for this passage might be question: in the english-speaking world, which country has the least affordable homes? you are wrong if you guessed the us, even with the housing bubble (气泡) and main sadness. nor is it the uk, where prices have risen because demand is far from supply. according to a recent survey of 227 cities around the globe, you must go south of the equator (赤道) to australia to find the priciest homesthe report measured a citys housing market along the following guidelines. an “affordable” home required three times or less of the average familys income to purchase. at four times earnings, a home fell into the “unaffordable” category. and a “seriously unaffordable” home needed five times a familys income. in australia, homes in the least affordable city cost just about 9,5 times the average income. sydney, perth, and melbourne were only a little under this figureaustralian officials offered little comment, apart from a general statement on the dismal findings. these prices make the possibility
