unit four wild animalsreadingteaching aims:to guess the general meaning from context;to infer meaning from students own background and knowledge;to identify specific meanings by scanning the textwriting on board:unit 4 wild animalssurvive in the wild kill it for its fur eat bamboo shoots cut down trees and forests protect giant pandas encourage sb. to do sth build more reservesteaching material or tools:radio, blackboard , multi-mediumteaching steps:step one , revision: (3)(一) get students to look at the pictures of some animals , and tell us the name of each animal step two, elicitation: (7)bring in some pictures of lovely giant pandas, and say with the students:“we all know these lovely animals are giant pandas”; then , get students to find out the answer to each blank, using their knowledge of giant pandas, tell students that they can discuss it in pairs ; next, encourage some students to say their answers out to the class. appearance: fat but lovely, black eyes, black and white furability: can climb treesfavorite food: bamboo shoots and leavesthe best place they live in: in the wild / forestsproblems: its difficult for them to live in the wild. they are getting fewer and fewer.(二) tell students that they are going to learn a lesson about giant pandas, get them to open their books at page 60, let students read the report and find the right paragraphs according to the main ideas which are shown on the screen:paragraph 1 something about xi wangparagraph 2-3 the growth of xiwang paragraph 4-6 the problem of giant pandasparagraph 7-8 the actions to protect pandastepthree,reading,listeningand practice: (10)(一) tell students to read paragraph 1-3 of the report to get something about xiwang , after that, they will be asked some questions about xiwang to check their understanding :1. at birth, how much did it weigh?100 grams.2. what did she look like when she was 10 days old?she looked like a white mouse.3. when she was 4 months old how heavy was she? and what did she start to do?10 kilograms. she started to go outside her home for the first time.4. when did she start to eat bamboo shoots and leaves?at six months.5. how long did she drink her mothers milk a day?for up to 14 hours a day.6. how heavy was she when she was one year old?35 kilograms7. at the age of 20 months old, what did she have to do? why?she had to look after herself, because her mother had another baby.(二) play the recording of paragraph 1-3 in the report, and get students to read these paragraphs with the tape; after that , let students look at a growth chart of xi wang on the screen, and match the sentences with the pictures, then write the correct letters in the boxes. check the answers and get ss to read the sentences and tell us the growth of xiwang in their own words.a. she started to look after herself.b. she was about 10 kilograms and started to go outside her home.c. she looked like a white mouse.d. she began to eat bamboo shoots and leaves.e. she weighed 100 grams.f. she weighed 35 kilograms.step four,reading,listeningand practice: (15)(一) let students look at the screen and match the words on the left with the meanings on the right. if they have some difficulty, get them to look at the phrases on the bb to help them guess the meaning of each word :survive stay alivefur giant pandas favorite foodbamboo shoots thick hair of animalsforests keep safe from dangerprotect large areas of land with treesencourage special areas for wild animalsreserves support after finishing this exercise, let ss read the phrases on the bb together.(二)tell students that giant pandas are so lovely, but they are facing more and more problems ; then, get students to read the rest of the report and find out what problems giant pandas are facing and what we can do to protect them, let students find out the information from the report , and put it into the following table:problemsactionsif hunters catch a giant panda, if farmers cut down trees and forests, if people find baby pandas, (三)play the recording of the report(paragraph 4-8), and at the same time, let students read these paragraphs with it; then, get students to close their books and do the exercises on the screen:complete the sentences with the words in the box:danger fur helpful reserves survive wildgiant pandas are in _ . we must help them_. hunters should not kill giant pandas for their _. farmers should not work in panda _. people should not take baby pandas away. this is not _ because baby pandas need to stay in the _ with their mothers.stepfive,readinglisteningand discussion : (10)ask students to read the whole report together, then let them close their books and listen to the recording of the whole report , make sure that they have got the meaning of the report; then , let them look at the questions on the screen, and discuss the questions with their pa
