It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants. Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the eighteenth century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has todaya person who is new in a job. Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early nineteen hundreds. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died. The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs. Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling, jealousy. The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay rise and she does not. 36. Greenhorn now refers to _. A. a person who is new in a job B. a new solider C. a young horse D. None of above37. A person who has a green thumb is a person _. A. who is good at growing plants B. whose thumbs are in green color C. whose garden is greener than others D. who is younger than his neighbors 38. The author is actually talking about _. Enter the Red Hat Society -a group holding the belief that old ladies should have fun.“My grandmothers didnt do anything but keep house and serve everybody. They were programmed to do that,” said Emils Comette, head of a chapter of the 7-year-old Red Hat Society. While men have long spent their time fishing and playing golf, women have sometimes seemed to become unnoticed as they age. But the generation now turning 50 is the baby boomers(生育高峰期出生的人), and the same people who refused their parents way of being young are now trying a new way of growing old.If you take into consideration feminism(女权主义), a bit of spare money, and better health for most elderly, the Red Hat Society looks almost inevitable(必然的). In this society, women over 50 wear red hats and purple(紫色的) clothes, while the women under 50 wear pink hats and light purple clothing.“The organization took the idea from a poem by Jenny Joseph that begins: “When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple. With a red hat which doesnt go,” said Ellen Cooper, who founded the Red Hat Society in 1998. When the ladies started to wear the red hats, they attracted lots of attention.“The point of this is that we need a rest from always doing something for someone else,” Cooper said. “Women feel so ashamed and sorry when they do something for themselves.” This is why chapters are discouraged from raising money or doing anything useful. “Were a ladies play group. It couldnt be more simple,” added Coopers assistant Joe Heywood.44From the text, we know that the “baby boomers” are a group of people who Ahave gradually become more noticeable.Bare worried about getting old too quickly.Care enjoying a good life with plenty of money to spend.Dtried living a different life from their parents when they were young.45It could be inferred from the text that members of the Red Hat Society are Ainterested in raising money for social work.Bprogrammers who can plan well for their future.Cbelievers in equality between men and women.Dgood at cooking big meals and taking care of others.46Who set up the Red Hat Society ?AEmily Comette.BEllen Cooper.CJenny Joseph. DJoe Heywood.47Women join the Red Hat Society because Athey want to stay young.Bthey would like to appear more attractive.Cthey would like to have fun and live for themselves.Dthey want to be more like their parents. DToday, air travel is far safer than driving a car on a busy motorway. But still there is a danger that grows every year. Airliners get larger and larger. Some airplanes can carry over 300 passengers. And the air itself becomes more and more crowded. If one large airliner struck into another in mid-air, 600 lives could be lost. From the moment an airliner takes off to the moment it lands, every movement is watched on radar screens. Air traffic controllers tell the pilot exactly when to turn, when to climb, and when to come down. The air traffic controllers around a busy airport like London-Heathrow may deal with 2,500 planes a day. Not all of them actually land at the airport. Any plane that flies near the airport comes under the orders of the controllers there. Even a small mistake on their part could cause a terrible accident. Recently such a disaster almost happened. Two large jets were flying towards the airport. One was carrying 69 passengers from Toronto, the other 176 passengers from Chicago. An air traffic controller noticed on his radar screen that the two planes were too close to each other. He ordered one to turn to the right and to climb. But he made a mistake. He ordered the wrong plane to do this. So, instead of turning away from the second plane, the first plane turned towards it. Fifteen seconds later it flew directly in front of the second plane. They avoided each other by the smallest part of a second. The distance between them was less than that of a large swimming pool. This is an example of the danger that grows every year.48. The air traffic controllers of an airport .A. control all the planes flying near the airportB. give orders to planes leaving the airportC. only deal with the planes that want to land thereD. are ordered to handle 2500 planes a day in England49. The danger of air crashes grows every year because .A. airliners are getting larger and air traffic is becoming heavierB. a pilot does not always hear a controllers orderC. a controller is likely to make more and more mistakesD. airports can hardly serve the growing number of airplanes50. The example in the passage is to show that .A. air traffic controllers are often carelessB. air traffic controllers should pay much attention to avoiding accidentsC. it is difficult for airplanes to avoid terrible accidentsD. two planes should not fly too close to each other 第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Mona LisaShe is widely seen as proof (证据) that good looks can last forever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa. 44 “The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said. 45 46 “It is very interesting that when youre not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,” said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. “Its because direct vision(视觉) is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. 47 In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later. 48 Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.A. Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile.B. This picture is now so valuable that no one can tell its exact price. C. Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the worlds most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.D. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to Frances King Francis I in 1519.E. The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum(卢浮宫博物馆) where it is housed.F. During World War II, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of t
