The Wall climbs up and down, twists and turns along the ridges of the Yanshan and Yinshan Mountain Chains through five provincesLiaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansuand two autonomous regionsNingxia and Inner Mongolia, binding the northern China together. The construction of the origin of the Wall dates back to the year 656 B.C. Later in 221 B.C., Emperor Qinshihuang ordered the connection of the individual walls and further extensions to form the basis of the present great wall. The Wall is 7.8 meters high and 6.5 meters wide at its base, narrowing to 5.8 meters on the ramparts, wide enough for five horses to gallop abreast. As a cultural heritage, the Wall belongs not only to China but to the world. The Great Wall is the largest of such historical and cultural architecture, and that is why it continues to be so attractive to people all over the world. The stadium is 330 metres long by 220 metres wide, and is 69.2 metres tall. It can hold 91,000 people at its most. The roof of the stadium has been omitted from the design. Experts say that this will make the stadium safer, whilst reducing construction costs. The stadium was conceived as a large collective vessel, which makes a distinctive and unmistakable impression both from a distance and when seen from up close. It meets all the functional and technical requirements of an Olympic National Stadium.Dragon Boat RaceIt is an activity performed in the Dragon-Boat Festival, which is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. The festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period. He committed suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating Qus body. They also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat. Today, people eat zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fishes) and race dragon boats in memory of Qus dramatic death.Giant PandaThe giant panda is a mammal classified in the bear family, native to central and southern China. Easily recognizable through its large, distinctive black patches around the eyes, ears and on its body, giant pandas are an endangered species, threatened by continued habitat loss and by a very low birthrate, both in the wild and in captivity.
