the importance of creating positive english class learning environmentsabstract: for chinese students, english learning belongs to the second language learning, or foreign language learning. language teaching and learning are different in different language learning environments. according to the theory of language acquisition,the training of knowledge acquisition and linguistic communication should be combined with real living environment. however in china, schools have many difficulties in affording such a natural and good english learning environment. this paper has discussed the relationship between positive learning environment and english learning, and the importance to create positive, vivid, effective english class learning environments for students. key words: importance; creating; positive; english class; learning environment 1 introductionenglish learning does not take place in a vacuum, but occurs within a particular context. such context is called the english learning environment. and class is the most immediate and important way for study, in which learning occurs and which affects students achievement and attitudes. especially in english teaching in china, creating positive class leaning environments can improve the effect of teaching.english learning is the second language learning for chinese students. according to the theory of language acquisition,the training of knowledge acquisition and linguistic communication should be combined with real living environment. however chinese schools cannot afford such a natural and good english learning environment. so, teachers should use a lot of ways to create positive and interesting english learning environments for students in the little space and limited time. 2 some problems in the english teaching in recent years, the education reform in china has affected teaching. we have seen some changes in english classroom teaching. but there are still several problems that impede the development of english teaching quality. firstly, many teachers are accustomed to talking too much and writing too much on the blackboard in class, which makes students taking notes uninterruptedly. this unhealthy teaching approach gives students fewer opportunities of mastering knowledge independently and training abilities actively. students are always thrown into passivity so that they have no time to think about, absorb, and digest knowledge. and what they have learnt could not be consolidated in time. secondly, there is a situation that some teachers organize class with chinese. it seems that an english class is changed into a chinese class. the lack of foreign language environment creates hundreds of thousands of students who use english with chinese thought. that is an important reason influencing english learning in a bad circle. thirdly, with the test pressure, teachers require students to take more practice in listening, reading, and writing, without speaking training. all in students brains are grammar, sentence structure, etc. they fail in speaking english loudly and fluently, even in simple communication with others in english. besides, as teachers cannot understand the teaching materials deeply and have class without flexibility, students are easy to be tired of dull class. a teacher, who is not good at learning from others to refresh knowledge, who repeats a single teaching method year by year, will be abandoned by new teaching system. in addition, many schools cannot afford enough advanced teaching equipments, just like language laboratory,multimedia classroom,computers, even tape-recorders. teachers have classes in depressing atmosphere without any equipment for assistance, which cannot attract students attention. these problems above exist recently in the teaching field. we can say this is the reflection of backward english learning environment. 3 relationship between english learning environment and english learningfor chinese students, english learning belongs to the second language learning, or foreign language learning. language teaching and learning are different in different language learning environments. foreign language learning occurs mostly in classroom, and is studied as a science. if it is practiced as a skill, the classroom would be a place that affords an artificial environment, but not a true and colorful one, where there is no english native speaking person around, no interaction, any input or feedback. (周海燕,2006) those who study english well in china can speak english in a right way, but not the native way. only in the english culture life can people learn the real and native english. it proves that english learning environment is the most important point in english learning. there is a growing need to understand well learning environments in our country. therefore it is the most difficult task for english teachers to create an advantageous english learning environment. for foreign language learners in the non-foreign-language environment, a large amount of scholars and teachers make surveys and research on their intelligence language learning abilities, ways of cognizance language environment, study strategies, learning motive, learning interest, learning opinions, and so on. however, the researches on learning environment are limited in china. so knowing students english learning environments is good for teaching and english study. 4 relationship between classroom environment and motivation classroom, the main place which teaching and learning occur is a world that students get the most english information. teachers should create english environments in classrooms consciously, where students may feel the english atmosphere after entering it. and one of the most difficult aspects of teaching is to get students to persist in learning tasks. some students persist longer than others, and some tasks appear to be more interesting than other tasks to some students. researchers have been interested for a long time in how classroom environments influence students motivation. the general finding is that environments characterized by mutual respect, high standards, and a caring attitude are more conducive to students persistence than other environments. (richard, 2005) an understanding of their interesting to learn english may shed some light on the impact of their motivation to the english study. in an interesting and unique study, a teacher studied the relationship between some of the dimensions of the classroom environmenthappy and sad moodsand students motivation to persist in learning tasks. she randomly assigned first- and second-grade children into different treatment groups. on the way to a classroom, some students were told a happy story and others a sad one. the experimenter acted happily in the happy story and sadly in the sad story. the various classrooms involved were decorated in one of two ways: with happy pictures or with sad pictures. in the room, the children were asked to work at a task at which they were interrupted from time to time and asked to think either happy or sad thoughts. students could stop working on the task whenever they liked. (richard, 2005) students thinking happy thoughts with a happy experimenter in a happy room persisted much longer at the learning task than did students thinking sad thoughts with a sad experimenter in a sad room. this type of result is important because it indicates that persistence at a task for a student is not simply determined by the childs self-control or interest but can be influenced by the environment and by aspects of the environment under the teachers control-room positive and happy moods. in a word, students persist longer in their studies and learning tasks if the learning environment is happy and positive. it is important to create a positive english class- learning environment to motivate students to learn english well.5 conclusio
