than the beast. in lord of the flies, the beast refers to the way in which a person will try to make himself believe that there is no evil (邪恶) inside himself by making someone or something else seem to be the cause for the evil. there is much evidence to support this throughout the book, but first it is necessary to show you the rise of the beast and evil within the boys. danger appeared on the very first day on the island when a little boy told everyone of a “beastie”, which he clearly saw the night before. the older boys said it was his imagination, but it was clear that the younger boys were troubled by the little boys words. it must be made clear at this point that he actually didnt see the beast. it is clear that the author golding uses the early parts of the book to show the boys fear of the beast. soon it became clear that even the older boys began to wonder whether in fact some kind of beast did come to the island. it was also clear that nobody was willing to admit this, but actually many boys now had terrible dreams and cried out in their sleep. it is further evidence that they were all afraid of the beast. the first signs of evil appearing in the boys came when jack and his hunters killed a pig and wanted to kill more. as jacks ambition (雄心) to kill a pig had been achieved, he now had a taste of glory (光荣). this means that he was by no means satisfied to have killed one pig, but would continue to do so. it is very important that jack felt it was necessary to kill more pigs though there was already an enough supply of food on the island. it is possible that jack simply wanted to kill more pigs because the evil inside him had begun to appear and forced him to kill more. another important event happened at this point violence among the boys. when jack wanted to set fire on a passing ship, piggy and ralph came up and stopped jack. he immediately beat piggy, whom he clearly looked down on, and broke his glasses. to some degree this further shows how the evil inside jack was beginning to take control of him. 41. the passage is probably taken from a(n) .a. news story b. book review c. ad d. diary 42. whats the boys reaction to the “beastie” at first?a. the “and they are for you. the money is sent to you because you are in need of it,” said the man. “and it is a present without conditions of any sort. the money will never be asked of you again.”blake to reduce pollution,” said ann woo, director of corporate citizenship at samsung electronics america, “the contest gets students thinking about how they can improve the world around them.” the students in james intrabartolos stem class decided to find a solution to a problem right outside their front door. “the first thing you need to do is look at a problem in your community,” said luis desouza, an eighth-grader in intrabartolos class. “what may seem like a small change can have a big influence.” after noticing rubbish collecting in a sewer (阴沟) near the school, the students were inspired to create a drain (下水道) cover that stops rubbish from entering the waterways that lead to the passaic river. the cover is a wooden panel (嵌板) attached to a large metal box. the students cut large holes into the top of the wooden panel, which was laid over the sewer. when rubbish collects in the sewer, it falls through the holes and into the box, rather than into the waterways. “we wanted to create something simple but practical,” said seventh-grader gabriel margaca. in the competition, the students showed their creation with a video mapping out how they created the drain cover. the students explained how they found a real-life problem without having to go far from home, and then found a way to solve it. oliver street school was among the five winners in the competition, taking
