being settled, newspapers and “dime novels” could depend on stories of the frontier settlements and tell tales about living in the untamed(未驯服的) wilderness to sell. the public back east was eager to read about the west, even if the stories were more fiction than fact. in 1902, owen wister published his novel the virginian, which was one of the first novels to treat the western as a serious literary form;the novel still sold well and had inspired several movies and a television series. in 1905, bertha h. bower and zane grey published their first novels, and the popular western novels had continued to flourish from that day on, with current novels by luke short, max brand, and louis l amour carrying on the tradition. the first western movie appeared even earlier than these serious western novels. before the turn of the century, an associate of edisons had filmed cripple creek barroom scene, a few seconds of film showing the inside of a saloon, to help publicize the invention of the movie camera.in 1903 the edison company filmed the first “fulllength” westernthe great train robbery. the film lasts less than fifteen minutes, but a story is told in its entirety. in the movie, bandits (强盗) rob a train and its passengers, killing the engineer, and find themselves tracked down by a posse. audiences loved the movie. some theaters were actually opened for the single purpose of showing the great train robbery and only later realized that they could do equally well showing other movies. the film was so successful that other companies, and finally even the edison company itself, began producing copies and other versions of the great train robbery. ironically, in an era when the west was still very realarizona, new mexico and oklahoma were all territories rather than states in 1903 the great train robbery was filmed in new jersey. 1. the purpose of this passage is to _. a. discuss the making of the movie the great train robberybdiscuss the early western novelscdiscuss the art of movie makingdtrace the development of the western as an american adventure story tradition2. zane grey was a_. anovelist bactorccowboy dmovie producer3. we can conclude from this passage that_. a. people lost interest in the west after 1903bowen wister was an excowboycnew jersey was still a “untamed wilderness” in 1903dfilms were fairly uncommon at the time when the great train robbery was made4. as used in this passage, the underlined word “flourish” (para.2) means_. areduce bdie outcflower dproduceb there used to be a term that was used to describe someone who drove their vehicles down the highway while staring at the scenery. these drivers just drove slowly, taking their own sweet time, as if they had nothing to do and no place in particular to go. thus, the expression, “sunday driver”, was born. consequently, a sunday driver wasnt necessarily someone who was driving on a sunday. a person could be a sunday driver any day of the week. the_expression_simply_meant_that_the_person_was_an_obstacle_to_other_drivers_who_were_in_a_hurry. the expression probably came about because there was a time when people would often decide to go for a relaxing drive on sunday afternoons. a sunday drive was a common occurrence years ago and especially on a nice warm sunny day. there were no stores open on sunday because of the “blue laws”, so you needed to be sure and fill up the gas tank and make any other needed purchases before sunday arrived. some of the states had strict blue laws that even prohibited some activities on sunday. however, there is still a lot to be said for the slow, gentle life that once existed.it was a time when very few people worked on sunday except for those professions vital to our wellbeing such as those in the medical profession. it was a day “set apart” that was used to rest, visit with neighbors and friends, or maybe go to grandmas house for supper. today there are many who return to work and children who go back to school overly tired on monday due to a lack of rest. perhaps there would be less stress related illnesses if we really kept sunday as a day of rest.5. according to the passage, “sunday driver” refers to the person who_.adrives his vehicle on sundaysbdrives for fun and relaxationcenjoys a weekend breakdmakes a sunday purchase6. what does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 mean?a.
