共同成长见仁见智lifeguard,sportscaster,movie star,governor,presidentthere wasnt much ronald reagan didnt do in life.“the world was one vast opportunity for him,”lou cannon wrote in his biography of the former us president,who died on june 5,aged 93.reagans final years saw him fight a losing battle against alzheimers disease (老年痴呆症).but his positive attitude toward life has given hope to many people.born in 1911 to a poor family in a small town in illinois,his father was a failed salesman who drank too much.it was in this powerful optimism that would serve him so well.he always believed better times lay ahead,and this was reflected in his high school year book entry.“life is one grand,sweet song,so start the music,”he wrote.as a teenager,reagan spent summers working as a lifeguard at his local beach,saving 77 lives in seven years.he graduated from college in 1932 with a degree in economics and sociology.but america was still in the middle of the great depression(经济大萧条),and jobs were hard to find.reagan finally found work as a radio sports announcer and this road led him to hollywood in 1937.during a 20-year film career,he never became a leading star.as in his lifeguard days,reagan loved to play the hero and only took the role of a bad guy once in more than 50 films.a talented speaker who was always able to connect with his audience,reagan became involved in politics in the 1950s.this popular touch led to him being elected governor of california in 1967.all the while reagan was in california,he had his eye on the white house.in 1980,aged 69,he became the oldest man ever elected president.he held office from 1981 to 1989,the first president to serve two complete terms after world war .when he left,aged 77,he held the highest popularity rating of any retiring president in us history.he remained positive even when he discovered he had an illness that would destroy him.“i will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal (永恒的)optimism for its future,” he wrote.【问题导入】 里根总统是美国历史上最伟大的总统之一。他的成功激励了许多人,有人佩服他那丰富的阅历和乐观主义精神,并把他视为人生的楷模。但是也有人认为,他是美国特定的社会制度下的产物,与中国国情不同,不能盲目崇拜。你认为有必要向里根总统学习吗?do you think it necessary to learn from president reagan?a university student:i should learn from president reagan,especially in job hunting after graduation.i think i can do well in jobs which are irrelevant to my present major like him.a retired official:his attitude toward his disease is worth admiring.old people should be optimistic in life.a young worker:president reagan is a good example.young people should be ambitious.maybe i will make a greater success in the future.a clerk in a government office:why should we learn him?there are many good examples for us to learn from in china.the usa is different from china in political system and the social custom varies greatly.my view:_读书做人【话题链接】 英国王妃戴安娜生前热心于公益事业,在英国民众中留下了良好的印象。it came as something of a surprise when diana,princess of wales,made a trip to angola in 1997,to support the red crosss campaign for a total ban on all anti-personnel landmines(地雷).within hours of arriving in angola,television screens around the world were filled with images of her comforting victims injured in explosions caused by landmines.“i knew the statistics,” she said,“but putting a face to those figures brought the reality home to me;when i met sandra,a 13 year-old girl who had lost her leg,and people like her.” the princess concluded with a simple message:“we must stop landmines.” and she used every opportunity during her visit to repeat this message.but,back in london,her views were not shared by some members of the british government,which refused to support a ban on these weapons.angry politicians launched an attack on the princess in the press.they described her as “very ill-informed” and a “loose cannon (乱放炮的人)”.the princess responded by brushing aside the criticisms:“this is a distraction (干扰)we do not need.all i am trying to do is help.”opposition parties,the media and the public immediately voiced their support for the princess.to make matters worse for the government,it soon emerge that the princesss trip had been approved by the foreign office,and that she was in fact very well-informed about both the situation in angola and the british governments policy regarding landmines.the result was a severe embarrassment for the government.to try and limit the damage,the foreign secretary,malcolm rifkin claimed that the princesss views on landmines were not very different from government policy,and that it was “working towards” a worldwide ban.the defense secretary,michael portillo,claimed the matter was “a misinterpretation or misunderstanding”.for the princess,the trip to this war-torn country was an excellent opportunity to use her popularity to show the world how much destruction and suffering landmines can cause.she said
