So how far could you get with a vocabulary of that size? Despite his sometimes colourful language, communicating with Wayne Rooney (a footballer in Manchester United) does not require a Shakespearean command of English. Thats just as well, as the England manager has admitted hes having problems learning some of the basics. “If I need to speak about the economy or other things, I cant speak,” he told reporters. “But when you speak about tactics (战术), you dont use a lot of words.” In Capellos defence, his vocabulary appears to be far wider than 100 words and it was probably a throwaway remark. But his comment raises an interesting question how far could such a limited knowledge of English take you? Not very far, says Peter Howarth, deputy director of Leeds Universitys language centre. “Its a ridiculously small number, you could learn 100 words in a couple of days. Its fairly easy to get some kind of meaning across but people end up speaking tourist English. “A hundred words wouldnt get you beyond some very familiar situations in a phrase book a weekend in London, how to get a hotel room or order a meal,” he says. A grasp of 1,500 words is needed to communicate at an intermediate (中级的) level, he suggests. Estimates (估计) for the average size of a persons vocabulary vary, but the dictionary expert Susie Dent says its about 20,000 active words and 40,000 passive ones. She says its important to distinguish (区分) between the active words we know and use and those we might know but dont use. “Of course 100 words is limiting, but its important to stress Capellos passive language, otherwise how would he handle press conferences?” she says. “It may be that for simple instructions on the field, 100 words is all he needs its not as ridiculous as perhaps it looks at face value.”59.The underlined word “throwaway” in Paragraph 4 probably means _.A. carefulB. boringC. not cleverD. not serious60.According to Peter Howarth, _.A. one hundred words are enough for daily communicationB. we should remember as many words as possibleC. tour English can help us go anywhere at easeD. tourist English can be grasped easily61.By saying “its not as ridiculous as perhaps it looks at face value”, Susie Dent means _.A. what Capello says makes senseB. what Capello says is unacceptableC. Capello uses passive words at press conferences.D. There are more active words than passive words.C Singapore is a country with 42% of its population foreign born. Singaporeans, even those of the same ethnic group (少数民族), have many different first languages and cultures. For example, within the Singaporean Chinese group, nearly a third speak English as their home language while almost half speak Standard Chinese as their home language and the rest speak various Chinese dialects (方言) as their home language. Due to these reasons, the English fluency level of people in Singapore varies vastly from person to person. Most reasonably educated Singaporeans do speak Singapore Standard English, alternatively known as Educated Singapore English, which, grammatically, is not different from standard British English, with changes being limited to accent and a few borrowed words, causing few challenges to any native Britons. Singapore English derives (起源) its roots from the 146 years of British colonial rule over Singapore until its independence in 1965. Before 1965, the standard form of English in Singapore had always been British English. After Singapore declared independence, English in Singapore began to take a life of its own, leading to the development of modern Singapore English. English had been the official language of the colonial government, and when Singapore gained selfgovernment in 1959, the local government decided to keep English as the main language in order to help develop economy. The use of English as the nations first language serves to bridge the gap between different ethnic groups in Singapore. English is the global language for commerce, technology and science, and improvement of English also helps to expedite Singapores development and it becomes important part of the global economy. There is an increasing trend of Singaporeans speaking English at home. For children who started primary school in 2009, 60% of Chinese along with 60% Indian pupils and 35% of Malay pupils mainly speak English at home. Because many Singaporeans grew up with English as their first language in school, some Singaporean Chinese may not be able to speak Standard Chinese.63.How many people in Singapore are native?A. Less than a quarter of the population.B. About forty percent of the population.C. Only half of the population.D. Nearly sixty percent of the population. 64.According to the text, when did the British begin to rule Singapore?A. In 146.B. In 1819.C. In 1959. D. In 1965.65.What is the meaning of the underlined word “expedite” in Paragraph 4?A. Speed up.B. Bring down.C. Put off.D. Hold back. 66.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?A. The British government suggested people in Singapore use more English.B. English has replaced all the other languages in Singapore.C. English is important to the union of the ethnic groups in Singapore.D. Almost all the children can speak English freely at home and at school.D My son was a secondgrader. He went to school by bus every day. He was the first student on in the morning, as we were farthest from school, and the last student off in the evening. I was a teacher myself and it was a comfort to realize the school staff (职员) were all working as hard as I was to provide a safe learning environment. One day I came home from work and waited for my son to get home for a long time. Then I called the school. “Perhaps hes just a bit late,” said the secretary. “I will call the driver to see if those children are home.” A few minutes later, I answered the phone to hear that the other students were home. Then I called his friends parents, to see if perhaps he had gotten off at their stop to play. The answers were all “No.”By that time, it was dark and I was scared. My home was in the mountain areas, and it was said that a wolf had come up somewhere. My husband wasnt at home, so I forced myself to calm down and decided to go out to look for him. I was about to go out when the telephone rang; it was from the driver. “Hes okay,” I heard. “He was asleep on the seats in the back, under a couple of jackets. Since its dark, can he spend the night with my family?” I was relieved and agreed. Since my son had a great adventure, the school started giving a copy of the list to the driver, so he could check off the childrens names when they got off the bus. I think highly of the school for taking the cautionary (警戒的) step ahead; it is a sign of their concern for students, parents, and staff.67. From Paragraph 1 we learn that _. A. the authors son went home by bus every afternoonB. the authors son came to school earlier thanother studentsC. the authors home was farther than that of any other studentD. the author was a teacher in her sons primary school68.
