BEC Course StatementsFurther Ahead: A Communication Skills Course for Business EnglishTargets and Objectives:This book is aimed at students or adults who have a professional need for Business English; people either in, or training for, jobs in the business world.More specifically, the material is relevant for learners, at pre-intermediate level or above, who need revision or further practice in developing communication skills.Listening Skills:l extracting relevant information;l structuring information;l inferring meaning from context;l becoming accustomed to different varieties of EnglishSpeaking skills:l problem-solving activities;l role-playing;l discussion topics.Selection of Material:The units are not graded but arranged according to:l Topicl Language area / skillCourse Content and OrganizationThere are 20 units:Unit 1 PeopleUnit 6 TransportationUnit 11 MarketingUnit 16 Business cultures and ethicsUnit 2 Talking about companiesUnit 7 Imports and exportsUnit 12 StatisticsUnit 17 MeetingsUnit 3 JobsUnit 8 ArrangementsUnit 13 MoneyUnit 18 ProcessesUnit 4 Work and playUnit 9 Products and servicesUnit 14 SocializingUnit 19 ConferencesUnit 5 Revision and consolidationUnit 10 Revision and consolidationUnit 15 Revision and consolidationUnit 20 Revision and consolidationUsing a UnitEach unit (except the revision units) consists of the following sections:Lead in: Give a short presentation on what the pictures show. This section introduces the content items to the listening section.Listening:This section is divided into two parts:l Information transferThis section consists of some taped listening passages, each accompanied by an information task.l TransferThis section contains individual, pair-work and group work activities which enable leaners to practise using langauge items and communication patterns related to the topic or theme of the unit.Presentation and Practicel PresentationThis section highlights and explains language items and communication patterns in the listening passagesl PracticeThis section contains language exercises to practise language items or communication patterns introduced in the Listening and Presentation sections.Time AllotmentEach unit is covered in two periods (as much as 100 minutes).Specific Contents and Objectives for Each UnitUnit I Peoplel Tasks:This unit deals with introducing yourself and others, greeting visitors, keeping a conversation going and asking questions to find out more about other people.l Grammar Review:Question forms are reviewed, and question tags are introduced.l Aims:As the main theme is meeting and greeting people, this unit provides a chance for you and learners to get to know each other and develop group cohesion, which will be important in successfully completing tasks later in the book.Unit 2 Talking about companiesl Tasks:This section deals with companies and products. Different lines of business are considered.l Grammar Review:The past simple for statements and questions is reviewed, together with irregular verbs and questions with Who, What, etc.l Aims:After learning this section, the learners are expected to be able to work on questions to find out more about a particular companies and products. The learners are also expected to be able to be familiar with business letter style and with a role play practising telephone calls to find out information.Unit 3 Jobsl Tasks:In this unit, on Jobs, company structure and job responsibilities are dealt with, and tasks for learners include writing a job advertisement and practising taking and leaving telephone messages. l Grammar Review:Present simple and present progressive are reviewed, contrasting the everyday with a present activity.l Aims:The leaners are expected to be able to understand the company structure and job responsibilities, especially to master everyday practice of taking and leaving telephone messages.Unit 4 Work and Playl Tasks:This unit, on the theme of Work and play, deals with making, accepting and rejecting invitations, talking about hobbies and interests and getting information for market research. Expressing likes and dislikes are also dealt with.l Grammar Review:Verbs followed by ing and adverbs of frequency are introduced and practised.l Aims:Learners are expected to be able to know the basic language and skills to make, accept and reject invitation; express personal hobbies and interests; and state likes and dislikes. The learners are also expected to be able to conduct a preliminary market research by getting relevent information.Unit 5 Revision and consolidationl TaskThis is the first of four revision and consolidation units in the Learners Book. They are intended to provide a skill-based revision and practice of the language covered in the previous four units.l Aims:This unit should give a clear sense of learners progress, and of areas that need further attention.Unit 6 Transportationl Tasks:This section deals with trasport and infrastructure.l Grammar Review:Comparative and superlative adjectives are reviewed, and adjectives describing quality are practised. There is also a practice given in correcting punctuation and capitalization.l Aims:Learners will practice and master the basic language and skill of talking about infrastructure, describing facilities, comparing advantages and disadvantages, and dealing with orders, specifically with the delivery instructions of an order.Unit 7 Imports and exportsl Tasks:Imports and exports has a very international flavor, allowing learners to think about trade in various nations of the world. Types of industry are discussed.l Grammar ReviewMass and count nouns are reviewed, and the present perfect is introduced and contrasted with the past simple.l Aims:Learners should master the basic language and skill of talking about imports and exports, and correctly use the mass and count nouns to talk about quantity in the context of imports and exports.Unit 8 Arrangementsl Tasks:Arrangements deals with planning for business trips and making appointments for business meetings.l Grammar Review:Future time is dealt with, and present progressive for arrangements and the will future for spontaneous offers is introduced.l Aims:Learners will have the opportunity to practise talking about schedules, making and changing arrangements and appointments, dealing with correspondence related to travel, and making a telephone call to arrange a meeting.Unit 9 Products and servicesl Tasks:This unit, which takes products and services as its theme, presents and practises language used in describing a product, making and dealing with complaints, and apologizing.l Grammar Review:Adjectives describing materials, shapes and colours are introduced and practised.l Aims:Learners should be able to use the basic language to describe a products, make and deal with complaints and apologize.Unit 10 Review and consolidationSee for Unit 5Unit 11 Marketingl Tasks:Marketing gives learners a chance to think about and discuss company image, the different ways of promoting a product, and the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of promotion.l Grammar Review:Relative pronouns who and which are practised.l Aims:Task-based exercises familiarize the learners with devising a promotional campaign for a product and choosing and ordering promotional items within a budget for a store opening.Unit 12 Statisticsl Tasks:Statistics introduces learners to language used to describe trends, to talk about cause and effect, and to describe changes in a companys performance. Learners will aslo discuss a companys training programme and will make a short presentation as part of a taske-based exercise.l Grammar Review:Adjectives and adverbs are revised and practised, and sequencing language to give structure to a presentation is also presented.l Aims:Learners are expected to be able to use the language to describe trends, cause and effects, changes in a companys performance, and to know how to sequence language to give structure to a presntation.Unit 13 Moneyl Tasks and Aims:This unit, on the theme of money, introduces different situations where price is negotiable, and gives learners the opportunity to practise a basic negotiation.Problems of collecting money are also presented, and learners will have the opportunity to practise writing a chasing letter and making a telephone call to chase payment.l Grammar Review:The unit introduces the first conditional with time clauses when and as soon as.Unit 14 Socializingl Tasks:Socializing covers the subjects of gift-giving when visiting clients abroad, organizing a free day while on a business trip, and eating out. Food and drink habits in different countries are also discussed.l Grammar Review:Indirect and polite question forms are presented.l Aims:Learners will be able to know different countries attitudes to gift giving and to sharpen the consciousness of making arrangements for a free day in a foreign city. In addition, learners will have the opportunity to develop their food and drink vocabulary.Unit 15 Revision and consolidationSee for Units 5 and 10.Unit 16 Business culture and ethicsl Tasks and Aims:This unit, on business culture and ethics, provides learners with a chance to discuss the cultures of different companies together with other issues relating to work, including women in work. The unit includes a questionaire for students to assess their own ethic standards at work, and this, together with the material on women in work, should provide a lively discussion.l Grammar Review:Model verbs would, might, and wouldnt are introduced and leaners practise expressing probability, giving opinions and expressing preference.Unit 17 Meetingl Tasks and Aims:Greening the office introduces learners to a variety of environmental issues, stating with the office environment. Learners will practise discussing green issuses in the office and making recommendations. They will aslo practise asking for opinions and agreeing or disagreeing with them.l Grammar Review:Reorted speech is introduced and a variety of activities allow learners to practise the use of reporting verbs.Unit 18 Processesl Tasks, Aims and Grammar Review:This unit presents a variety of company-related topics. Modal verbs have to, must, can, dont have to, cant and mustnt are presented in the context of describing employment practices and rules and regulations at work. Processes are described together with appropriate sequencing language and the use of the passive voice in the present tense. Finally, a brief company history is given and the passive voice in the past tense is introduced.Unit 19 Conferencesl Tasks, Aims and Grammar Review:Unit 19, on conferences, is largely a t
