was living in a trailer(拖车) that was in poor condition. a crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced. we decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new housesomething unusual but necessary under these circumstances. the family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen. on tuesday of that week, while we were eating lunch together, i asked the familys three boys, josh, eric and ryan, “what do you want for your new room?”expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were astonished when josh responded, “i just want a bed.”the boys had never slept in a bed! they were accustomed to plastic mats. that night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. on thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding. when we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. we could hardly contain ourselves. it was like watching excited children on christmas morning. that afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds together, eric ran into the house to watch us. too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wideeyed enthusiasm from the doorway. as my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, eric asked, “what is that?”“a pillow, ” he replied. “what do you do with it?” eric continued to ask. “when you go to sleep, you put your head on it, ” i answered softly. tears came to my eyes as my father handed eric the pillow. “ohthats soft, ” he said, hugging it tightly. now, when my sister or i start to ask for something that seems urgent, my dad gently asks, “doyouhaveapillow?”we know exactly what he means. 16the writers first volunteer project was_. aworking on a poor trailerbhelping a poor familycdonating beds and beddingddealing with a housing problem17on hearing joshs answer, the writer was shocked because_. athe family lived in a trailerbhe expected to get some toysche didnt know what a bed wasdthe boys had no bed to sleep in18from the passage, we can learn that eric had never seen_ before.aa trailer ba truckca pillow da house19by saying “doyouhaveapillow?”, the writers father means that_. awhat they want to get may be unnecessarybthey should not waste money on small thingscthey should do more volunteer work for the poordwhat he will buy is not what they want but a pillowbtwo recent studies have found that punishment is not the best way to influence behavior. one showed that adults are much more cooperative if they work in a system based on rewards. researchers at harvard university in the united states and the stockholm school of economics in sweden did the study. they had about two hundred college students play a version of the game known as the prisoners dilemma. the game is based on the tension between the interests of an individual and a group. the students played in groups of four. each player could win points for the group, so they would all gain equally. but each player could also reward or punish each of the other three players, at a cost to the punisher. harvard researcher david rand says the most successful behavior proved to be cooperation. the groups that rewarded it the most earned about twice as much in the game as the groups that rewarded it the least. and the more a group punished itself, the lower its earnings. the group with the most punishment earned twentyfive percent less than the group with the least punishment. the study appeared last month in the journal science. the other study involved children. it was presented last month in california at a conference on violence and abuse. researchers used intelligence tests given to two groups. more than eight hundred children were aged two to four the first time they were tested. more than seven hundred children were aged five to nine. the two groups were retested four years later, and the study compared the results with the first test. both groups contained children whose parents used physical punishment and children whose parents did not. the study says the iqs of the younger children who were not spanked were five points higher than those who were. in the older group, the difference was almost three points. the more they are spanked, the slower their mental development is. 20according to the first study, we mainly infer that_. athe game is called prisoners dilemmabthe less a group punished itself, the lower its earningscadults are much more cooperative if rewardeddthe game is introduced in the journal science21which of the following is true according to the second study?achildrens iqs have much to do with physical punishment. bthe study is about violence and abuse of children. cthe children tested were divided into groups of four.dchildrens mental development only relies on their iqs. 22what does the underlined word “spanked” refer to?apunished. bblamed.ctested. dpraised.23what might be the best title for the text?athe best way to correct misbehaviorbpunishment is the best way of educationccooperation is the most successful behaviordpunishment or reward: which works better on behavior? 句型公式:it/that/this is the first (second, third) timethat从句(现在完成时)。 get over摆脱,痊愈,从恢复常态;get up上升;get off停止讨论,离开;get out生产,出版。 when i was at college i spoke three foreign languages是对过去事实的陈述,故用一般过去时。i have forgotten all except a few words of each是现在的情况,强调结果,故使用现在完成时。 “it is/has been一段时间since从句”为固定句型,表示自从上次做某事到现在有多长时间了;scene作先行词且定语从句中需要的是地点状语,故用where或in which引导定语从句。 be meant for意图/打算给。
