Itinerary of October 1st: We meet at Guangbutun bus station near the south gate of Wuhan University and the overpass at 8:30am. Then we take bus from Guangbutun to Zhonghua Road. We go to Hubu lane to taste Wuhans local snacks, and then take ferry across Yangzi River to Qingchuan pavilion to visit Dayu Park and Qingchuan pavilion. After that, we walk to Nananzui to watch how Han River and Yangzi River converge. Finally we take bus to Guiyuan Temple, the most famous Buddhist temple in Wuhan.户部巷 Hubu LaneLocated in Ziyou Road, Wuchang District of Wuhan City, Hubu Lane is one of the most famous streets in Wuhan with over 400 years of history. The 150-meter long street is crowded with various kinds of suppliers, including snack stalls, shopping booths and entertainment venues. It has become Wuhans official snack street, containing 160 stores that sell 170 types of breakfast foods and snacks. In here, you can try some authentic Re Gan Mian (hot-and-dry noodles), Fried Tofu Skin and shaomai (Steamed Pork Dumplings).大禹治水园 Dayu Park to commemorate King YuKing Yu Tamed the Flood Long time ago, it was said that a deluge engulfed a huge area of land claimed many lives, so King Shun sent Yu to control the flood. Talking with seniors, Yu drew lessons from the past water-control experience. After the field survey, he made up a feasible plan. Then he led people to divert he floods, and during this time, though he actually passed by the door of his own home for three times, he didnt go in. With 13-year persistent efforts under his leadership, 9 large rivers were finally dredged leading floods into the sea. While harnessing the floods, Yu, along with others, helped people rebuild their homes, fallowed lands and resumed production. In this way, he gave the common people a peaceful and contented life and achieved an immortal feat. At that time, to commemorate Yu the Great, the whole country was called “the City of Yu”; and for his feat, a mausoleum called “Yu Ling” was built in his honor by the later generations.晴川阁Qingchuan PavilionQingchuan Pavilion, located at the foot of Tortoise Hill in Hanyang district, faces the Yellow Crane Tower on the other side of the Yangtze River. It is a key cultural relic protected by Wuhan City. First built during Jiajing Year of Ming Dynasty(1522-1567), the pavilion got its name from a poem written by Cui Hao, a famous poet in Tang Dynasty. Although it does not have such a long history as the Yellow Crane Tower, you are able to have a wonderful birds-eye view on top of it. The pavilion boasts a specially-designed shape, thus winning the title of the “The First Pavilion of Chu”(a kingdom located within the present Hubei Province during the period from770 B.C. to 221 B.C.)归元寺 Guiyuan Temple Today we will visit the famous temple-Guiyuan Temple. It is a famous relic of Wuhan. And it is built between the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty by the rabbis of Baiguang and zhufeng ,until now it is over 300 years old.Guiyuan Temple together with Baotong Temple,Lianxi Temple and Zhengjue Temple are regarded as the four big temples of Wuhan. Now we arrived at our dastination-Guiyuan temple. So let us go into it to have a good time. Ok now we have stood in the Buddhist Scriptures pavilion where the scripture of Buddhism are kept. Please look at the jade statue .It is a statue fo Sakyamani, the fouder of Buddhism. It is said that he founded Buddhism in India in the 6th century BC. You can see it caved with a gteat block of pure white jade weighing 3 tons ,it was presented to Wuhan by an eminent monk of Burma in 1935.And it is preserved well till now. If we watch the statue, we may sense that the peaceful expression on the Buddhas face has brought us to a quiet and harmonious state. Well pay a visit to a very serious, sacred place. Generally, the place is regarded as the most holy by Buddhists. It is the Grand Hall, where the founder of Buddhism, Sakyamuni is worshiped. It is always the center of a Buddhist temple in construction and in Buddhists mind. The statue in the middle is Sakyamuni. These two statue beside the Buddha are his two disciples. The one on the right was said to be Sakyamunis cousin and he had good memory so that he could remember all the Buddha told his disciples. The one on the left was said to be the lord of Brahmnism and he once was Sakyamunis tutor. But afterwards he was convinced by Buddhism after long-term debate between Buddhism and other religions and he accepted Sakyamuni as his tutor. Thus he became the eldest one of all Sakyamunis disciples. At the back of Sakyamunis stutue is the wood-carving of Guangyin ,you see ,the woodcaving remains very well ,although it is already 300 years old.It stands at a slant of 30 degrees,so it is a very rare carving all over the world at present.According to the legend ,in ancient times, there was a kind of big animal in the South China Sea,people called it Ao fish, when it turned over his body ,the earthquake would happen and disasters would fall down to people ,in order to save people and let people lead a comfortable life,Guanyin defeated Ao Fish and stood on the head of it and made it never turn over its body.In the wood-caving ,behind Guanyin were the twenty-four guardians carrying out rhe Buddhist law.Besides Guanyin, stand her two disciples ,the right one is named Pupil Shancai. And the left one is named longnu. Ok,Next, well pay a visit to the Arhat Hall in the south court. The Arhat Hall is an important structure in a Buddhist temple. But not all temples have an Arhat Hall, especially, well-kept Arhat Halls are very rare in China. This one is among them, and whats more, it has its own unique characteristics. Generally, an Arhat Hall is a square building. The building is subdivided into four small square courts so that the hall can get enough sunlight. This kind of structure show some lucky implies in Chinese Buddhist culture. Another characteristic about the hall lies in these sculptures themselves. They were neither made up of wood, nor stone, nor clay. A special way was taken in making them, which could prevents them from being burned, being soaked or being eaten by insects. All the sculptures were floating in water while Wuhan was flooded in 1954, but, surprisingly, they were sound and safe after the flood had receded. It was really a wonder. As we know that, arhats are the immortals in Buddhism. But when you have a look around the sculptures, you may find from the expressions on their faces that they are so familiar to you. Thats only because they were molded on the basis of the people in the reality, so they are human beings in our daily life rather than immortals. Arhats are the symbols of harmon
