Newton is best known for explaining how gravity works. Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, England on January 4, 1643. As a child, he loved to make model windmills (风车) and other mechanical toys, but he did badly in school. At the University of Cambridge, both the students and professors disliked him because of the chip on his shoulder. He was about to quit when one of his professors recognized the genius behind his rude behavior and became Newtons special tutor. Newton started thinking about gravity while he was on a break from Cambridge. Scientists already knew such a force existed, but Newton found the formula to describe how much force any two bodies will exert (施加) on each other. Since he couldnt prove his theory with the mathematics available, he invented calculus (微积分). So he could do it. He explained the mathematical theory of tides under gravitational pull from the sun, moon and earth. He discovered the secrets of light and color and showed how the universe is held together. He made all of those amazing discoveries within 18 months, between 1665 and 1667, though he didnt publish his theory on how gravity works until 1687. Some people call that book, , the greatest scientific book ever written. He also invented the reflecting telescope. Newton was knighted (授以爵位) by Queen Anne and became Sir Isaac Newton in 1705. 56. Newton was honoured by the royal family in the 1770sThe Renwick exhibit (展览) is called “Going West!” It shows fifty quilts made from around the 1830s to the 1930s in the area of what is today the Midwestern state of Nebraska. Robyn Kennedy is the chief of the Renwick Gallery. She says Sandi Fox, who was in charge of the exhibit, looked at more than two thousand quilts before she chose the ones to show. Settlers in their wagons pulled by horses followed these paths leading to the west to find land and create a new life for themselves. Some settlers continued further west. But others decided to settle in Nebraska. The Renwick exhibit explores quilts made by settlers and later generations of quilters in this part of America known for its harsh winters. A few of the quilts in the “Going West!” exhibit were treasures that families brought with them from Europe as reminders of the life they left behind. Looking at these quilts, you can imagine how the family enjoyed their warmth and beauty while building a new life in America. Some quilts in the exhibit tell a story about the groups of people who settled in Nebraska. Robyn Kennedy said, “Well, it really gives you an idea of the sense of community that these people had.” Other quilts tell a story about an individuals life. Edith Meyers stitched words onto her quilt describing parties and dances she attended. The stitches can be made in such a way as to form detailed patterns or designs on the quilt. Some patterns like the wagon wheel, log cabin and lonely star explained the experiences of settlers on the American frontier (边境). Some states have had several quilt exhibits over the years. Quilts were more than warm protection against cold winters.61. Concerning the quilts on show, we know that _.A. there are more than 50 quilts in total B. all of them are of great qualityC. some of the quilts were made in the 1940s D. they were picked out from more than 2,000 ones 62. We learn from the passage that the exhibit is called “Going West!” because it _.A. is held in the West of AmericaB. is held for the people who live in the West nowC. aims to help people learn better the history of the WestD. aims to encourage people to go to the West 64. In which section of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage?A. Advertisement. B. Education.C. Culture. D. Travel.Psychologists in Britain have said that the last full week of January is the most depressing time of the year, and have labeled the Monday of that week “Blue Monday”, the most depressing day of the year. Mondays are generally seen as the worst day of the week because people feel grumpy and tired at having to go back to work after a weekend with a different sleep pattern. There are various reasons why more people feel depressed at this time of year. Many people have unpaid credit card bills for the Christmas presents they bought. As the party season is over, people feel stressed because they have to go back to real life work and commuting; they may be unhappy with their body image after eating too many cakes, chocolates, and other food at Christmas-time. People may have already failed in their New Years plans, such as giving up smoking. The bad weather in January can also contribute to people feeling fed up. Some companies are taking this quite seriously and offering suggestions for all the staff who are feeling depressed. They hope that helping people as soon as there are signs of depression will keep people from taking time off. Evidence shows that unreasonable managers who contribute to their staff feeling fed up at this time can expect an uncooperative (不合作的) workforce. However, its not all bad! Many people feel optimistic at this time that things can only get better. Psychologists offer suggestions of how to fight against feeling blue. These include spending 15 minutes doing a “gratitude exercise”, thinking about and writing down what you are grateful for, such as health, family, friends and so on. Taking up a new hobby, doing some exercise, going to bed earlier, eating a healthy breakfast, and listening to some cheerful music are all recommended (推荐) as ways to feel more cheerful. 65. Since 7th January is the first Monday of January, the underlined term “Blue Monday” would be _. A. 14th January B. 21st January C. 28th January D. 4th February66. Everyone feels depressed during the last full week of January.B. Many workers leave their jobs during the most depressing time of the year. C. Some people are not sad in January as they know that all the following months will be better.D. Psychologists are working hard on how to solve the “Blue Monday” problem. Though nearly all people use the same kinds of basic body language, there are many tiny differences between different groups of people. Different cultures, genders, and even age groups have different ways of using body language to communicate. Knowing how to correctly use body language with different groups of people is very important for communicating well. While communicating with people across borders, you need to study not only language differences, but gesture and body language differences as well. For instance, in America, pretending to cut your throat means, “I want to harm you.” But in Swaziland it means, “I love you.” Even gestures that may seem unimportant to Americans can have a much larger impact (影响) in other cultures. It is perfectly acceptable to cross your legs in American culture, but in countries such as Turkey, it is considered highly offensive. Knowing how to communicate using your body is also important when communicating across age groups. Different age groups of people communicate through body language in different ways, so you should learn the different ways they communicate with each one. Small children use body language to get what they want, while adults and the elderly use it to make a point and to understand others better. Even though they may be communicating the same idea, men and women each use slightly different sets of body language. From the way they move to the way they understand others body language, there are many slight differences between genders. No matter what group of people youre trying to communicate with, it is always important to understand how you use your body to communicate with them. When you know the different gestures and symbols used by different groups of people, you will be able to effectively communicate with many different people. Thank you for listening. Next time well talk about something related to dialect. 69. What is this passage mainly about?A. Why people dont know how to use body language well.B. The importance of knowing how to use body language with different groups of people. C. The importance of using body language correctly when talking with foreigners.D. How to communicate better with different groups of people.70. Could it be otherwise with 10 people, including a 2-year-old and 4-year-old, crowded into a rented four-bedroom flat trying to eat breakfast and get ready to ski at the same time? No family vacation is easy not even for an expert and ski trips are especially tough. All that gear to keep track of! All of those people to feed! But in the end, for my gang at least, these trips are well worth the trouble and are some of the best times our family has had together. Heres my diary of our trip last season to Mountain Resort in southwest Colorado where you can ski free until December 15. Its only noon and Im already a little angry from getting everyone organized. Then I meet Dan Beck, ski instructor. “Now its time for you,” he and ski school director Charlie Farnan tell me. I got injured last year and wonder if I should hang up my skis, but Dan takes me up in the chairlift. Terrific sight! The sun is shining. No one is telling me to “Ski faster, Mom!” Its important for moms and dads on vacation whether skiing or elsewhere to carve out some time for themselves. My two daughters ski by and stop for a quick hug in the snow. When I get back to the flat late in the afternoon, everyone has had an excellent day. We gather the gang to go to one of our favorite restaurants, Slogar, in this tiny historic mining town. At Slogars, we chow down on fried chicken, mashed potatoes, steak and homemade biscuits, all of which are served family style. The perfect end to a near-perfect vacation day! 73. What does the underlined phrase “carve o
