Hfe completely unknown to anyone except her family and a few friends .Less than a dozen of her poems were published during lifetime . However , she is regarded today as a great poet, perhaps the greatest poet the United States has produced . Along with the Greek poet Sappho, she may be one of the two greatest woman poets who have ever lived .Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830,in a small Massachusetts town called Amherst. Hers was an old faniliy, her ancestors(祖先)had come to the United States 200 years before. Her parents were not really rich , but they were certainly not poor . She had an old brother ,Austin , and a younger sister , Lavinia . She was educated at the Amherst Academy and Mount Holyoke Womens Seminary. She showed signs of being a gifted writer rather early. But the time and place in which she lived wan not a good one for a woman artist to succeed . It was when she closed the door of her room that the most important and creative (创作的)hours of her life were spent, the hours when she wrote her poetry . She was regarded as a recluse by many of her neighbors.Emily died on May 15,1886.It is not known whether Emily Dickinson regarded herself as a success or failure at the time she died. C In the 18th century New York was smaller than Philadelphia and Boston.Today it is the largest city in America. How can the change in its size and important be explained ? To answer this question we must consider certain facts about geography ,history ,and economics (经济). Together these three will explain the huge growth of Americas most famous city. Place where transportation lines meet are good places for making raw materials into finished goods. That is why seaports often have cities nearby. But cities like New York needed more than their geographical location (位置)in order to become great industrical centers . Their development did not happen simply by chance. About 1815, when many Americans from the east coast had already moved toward the west, trade routes from the ports to the central areas of the country began to be a serious problem. The slow wagons of that time, drawn by horses or oxen, were too expensive for moving heavy freight(货物)very far. In New York a canal(运河)seemed the best solution to the transportation problem. Therefore, the Erie Canal was constructed .After several years of work it was completed in 1825. The canal produced an immediate effect. Freight costs were cut to about one-tenth of what they had been.New York City, which had been smaller than Philadelphia and Boston, quickly became the leading city of the coast .In the year that followed ,transportation routes on the Great Lakes were joined to routes on the Mississippi Raver. Then New York became the end point of a great inland shipping system.Later the coming of the railroads made canal shipping less important , but it tied New York even more closely to the central areas of the country . It was eadier for people in the central states to ship their goods to New York for export overseas.Exports from New York were greater than imports . So shipping companies were eager to fill their ships with passengers on the return trip from Europe. Passengers could come from Europe very cheaply as a result .Thus New York became the greatest port for receiving people from European countries . For these great numbers of new Americans New York had to provide homes, goods ,and services. Their labor helped the city become great.64. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1? A.To ask why New York became famous. B.To ask about the discovery of New York. C.To introduce the history of American cities. D. To call peoples attention to New Yorks development.65.What was New York like before the year 1825?A.Its shipping system was highly developde. B.Its location made it an industrial center
