The English language is made _ of the grammar _ vocabulary these people brought _ Britain. That is why English has _ many difficult rules that confuse people.Old EnglishOld English is very different _ the English we speak nowadays. _ fact, we would not be able to understand it _ we heard it today. Before the 5th century, people in Britain _ spoke a language called Celtic. Then two Germanic groups _ the European mainlandthe Angles and the Saxonsoccupied Britain. Old English consisted _ a mixture of their languages. (_ the English language and the English people are named _ the Angles; the word Angle was spelt Engle in Old English.) Aside _ place names such _ London, very few Celtic words became part _ Old English. _ the end of the 9th century, the Vikings, people from Northern European countries such as Denmark and Norway, began to move to Britain. They brought _ them their languages, _ also mixed _ Old English. _ the 10th century, Old English had become the official language of England. When we speak English today, we _ feel puzzled _ which words or phrases to use. This is _ English has many words and phrases from different languages, but _ similar meanings. For example, the word sick came from a word once used _ the Angles and the Saxons, _ ill came from a word once used by the Norwegians.Middle EnglishMiddle English is the name given _ the English used from _ the 12th to the 15th centuries. Many things played _ part in the development _ this new type of English. The _ important contribution was from the Normans, _ French-speaking people _ defeated England and took control _the country in 1066. _, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as _ as the Angles and the Saxons victory about 600 years earlier, which led _ Old English replacing Celtic. Even _ the Normans spoke French for the entire 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English _ the first language. _ the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted _ even more words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French). _ is interesting to learn how the words for most animals raised _ food, such as cow, sheep and pig, came from Old English. However, the words for the meat of these animals, _ was served to the Normans, came from Old French: beef, mutton, pork and bacon. Old French made other contributions _ Middle English as well. In Old English, the Germanic way _ making words plural was used. For example, they said housen instead _ houses, and shoen instead of shoes. _ the Normans took control, they began using the French way of making plurals, adding an -s to house and shoe. Only _ few words kept their Germanic plural forms, such as man/men and child/children. _ the Norman Conquest, high-class people spoke French _ common people spoke English. _, by _ latter half of the 14th century, English had come _ widespread use _ all classes in England. In 1399, Henry became King of England. His mother tongue was English, and he used English _ all official events. Modern English Modern English appeared _ the Renaissance in the 16th century. Because _ this, Modern English includes many Latin _ Greek words. Pronunciation _ went through huge changes during this period. _ course, this was _ the end of the changes in the English language. The question of _ English will keep _ changing in the future is easy to answer. _ is certain that this process will continue, and people will keep inventing new words and new ways of saying things.Unit 3 Lost civilizationsDay 1,15 JulyI feel lucky to have won a place _ this trip. We are in Italy now, and tomorrow we are visiting Pompeii. Next week we are flying _ China, and going to Loulan, which is known _ Chinas Pompeii _ the desert. Both Pompeii and Loulan became lost civilizations long ago.Day 2,16 JulyThis morning we attended a lecture _ Pompeii. The city was founded _ the 8th century BC. In 89 BC, the Romans took _ Pompeii. It then became _ rich and busy city. Near the city _ a volcano. _ 24th August AD 79, the volcano erupted and lava, ash and rocks poured _ of it _ the surrounding countryside. It continued _ erupt _ the next two days. Many people were buried alive, and _ was the city. _ unfortunate!Day 3,17 JulyToday I saw the ancient Roman city of Pompeii _ it was 2,000 years ago. How amazing! The city was forgotten for many years _ the 18th century _ a farmer discovered a stone _ writing on it. People started to dig in the area _ treasure, _ caused much damage. _, in 1860, the area was put _ government protection _ it could be preserved and studied._ I walked around the city, I saw streets just _ they had been, with stepping stones _ the road so you did not have to step _ the mud _ rainy days! I saw several houses _ were decorated _ wall paintings. I also saw the people who had been buried alive. It turns out _ after the ash covered the people _ failed to fee the city, their bodies nearly completely broke down and disappeared, _ (leave) empty spaces to produce true-to-life figures _ the people who had died in the disaster. You can see them today in Pompeii , in the same place _ the people fell. The volcano is _ there, but looks very quiet now. _ is hard to imagine _ this peaceful volcano destroyed the whole city!Day10,24 JulyFinally, we arrived _ Loulan after several days of travelling. This commercial city was busy _ wealthy about 2,000 years _. It was _ stopping point _ the famous Silk Road _ the East and the west. _ is believed to have been gradually covered _ by sandstorms from AD200 to AD400. I am so excited to be here!Day11,25 JulyAn scholar _ the local cultural institute, Professor Zhang, told us that around the year 1900 the European explorer Sven Hedin discovered _ ruins of the Loulan Kingdom. Seven found the remains of buildings buried _ the sand, together _ a lot of treasures, _ coins, painted pots, materials such _ silk, documents and wall paintings. When we went to the city, we saw the city walls, palaces, temples, workshops and towers. We found the ruins _ interesting. There was an ancient water system that ran _ the middle of the city. The desert was _ a green land with huge trees, _ they were cut down and that resulted _ the city from being buried _ sand_ a pity!Advertisements 广告;宣传Nowadays,we can find advertisements _ wherever we go. we are so used _ them _ we often do not even realize how many we see and hear in_ a day. I did some research_advertisements, and have some very important information to share _ you. What is an advertisement ?An advertisement uses words and pictures _ persuade people to buy a product _ service,or to believe _ an idea. Newspapers, magazines, the Internet, radio and television are _most common places to find them. There are two _ types of advertisements-commercial advertisements and public service advertisements(PSAs).A commercial advertisements is one _ someone has paid_to advertise a product or service. _ are often run for free, and are meant_ educate people _ health, safety, or any _ problem _affects public welfare.Does an advertisement tell people the _ truth ?There are laws to protect people _advertisements _ cheat people. However, we _ must be aware _the skilful methods used _ ads to try and sell us things. Even _an ad does not lie, _ does not mean it is _-_ innocent. One toothpaste ad declares, Bright-Teeth fights bad breath! This statement tries to fool you_assuming that the toothpaste cures bad breath,_ it does not say that! _ it says is that it fights it, and that is not the same thing at _.One grocery tells customers, “You are proud _your cooking,_ shouldnt you buy the _ freshest food? This ad is very clever, _ it tells customers they are good cooks. _, it never says that this grocery has _freshest food! The grocery just hopes_when you read the ad, you _feel pleased _ the nice comment, remember the words freshest food, and make a mental connection _ the food_ the groc
