As a doctor, mother and scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the babys point of view. Mothers, doctors and nurse alike have no idea of where a babys blood sugar level lies. All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth. It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four-hourly feeding schedule will make a baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock-watching schedule was Dr Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. Ive never heard anything so ridiculous. Baby feeding shouldnt follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks. Well, at last we have copper-bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By the age of 8, their IQ (智商)scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample (样本)of 10,419 children born in the early 1990s,taking account of parental education, family income, a childs sex and age, the mothers health and feeling style. These results dont surprise me. Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no account of sinking blood sugar levels. I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeling practices.25What does the author think about Dr King?A. He is strict B. He is unkindC. He has the wrong idea D. He sets a timetable for mothers26The word copper-bottomed in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to _.A. basic B. reliable C. surprising D. interesting27What does the research tell us about feeling a baby on demand?A. The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8 C Sports account for a growing amount of income made on the sales of commercial time by television companies. Many television companies have used sports to attract viewers from particular sections of the general public, and then they have sold audiences to advertisers. An attraction of sport programs for the major U. S. media companies is that events are often held on Saturday and Sunday afternoonsthe slowest time periods of the week for general television viewing. Sport events are the most popular weekend programs, especially among male viewers who may not watch much television at other times during the week. This means the television networks are able to sell advertising time at relatively high prices during what normally would be dead time for programming. Media corporations also use sports to attract commercial sponsors that might take their advertising dollars elsewhere if television stations did not report certain sports. The people in the advertising departments of major corporations realize that sports attract male viewers. They also realize that most business travelers are men and that many men make family decisions on the purchases of computers, cars and life insurance. Golf and tennis are special cases for television programming. These sports attract few viewers, and the ratings(收视率)are unusually low. However, the audience for these sports is attractive to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, to certain advertisers. It is made up of people from the highest income groups in the United States, including many lawyers and business managers. This is why television reporting of golf and tennis is sponsored by companies selling high-priced cars, business and personal computer, and holiday trips. This is also why the networks continue to carry these programs regardless of low ratings. Advertisers are willing to pay high fees to reach high-income consumers and those managers who make decisions to buy thousands of “company cars” and computer, with such viewers, these programs dont need high ratings to stay on the air. 28Television sport programs on weekend afternoons . A. result in more sport eventB. get more viewers to play sportsC. make more people interested in televisionD. bring more money to the television networks29Why would weekend afternoons become dead time without sport programs?A. Because there would be few viewersB. Because the advertisers would be off workC. Because television programs would go slowlyD. A. their advertisers are carmakersB. their viewers are attracted by sportsC. their advertisers target at rich peopleD. their viewers can afford expensive cars31What is the passage mainly about?A. Television viewers are determined by male viewersB. Rich viewers contribute most to television companiesC. Sports are gaining importance in advertising on televisionD. Commercial advertisers are the major sponsors of sport event D In his 1930 essay “Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren ”, John Keynes, a famous economist, wrote that human needs fall into two classes: absolute needs ,which are independent of what others have , and relative needs ,which make us feel superior to our fellows. He thought that although relative needs may indeed be insatiable (无止境的) , this is not true of absolute needs. Keynes was surely correct that only a small part of total spending is decided by the desire for superiority. He was greatly mistaken, however, in seeing this desire as the only source of insatiable demands. Decisions to spend are also driven by ideas of quality which can influence the demands for almost all goods, including even basic goods like food. When a couple goes out for an anniversary dinner, for example, the thought of feeling superior to others probably never comes to them. Their goal is to share a special meal that stands out from other meals. There are no obvious limits to the escalation of demand for quality. For example, Porsche, a famous car producer, has a model which was considered perhaps the best sport car on the market Priced at over $120,000, it handles perfectly well and has great speed acceleration. But in 2004, the producer introduced some changes which made the model slightly better in handling and acceleration. People who really care about cars find these small improvements exciting. To get them, however, they must pay almost four times the price.By placing the desire to be superior to others at the heart of his description of insatiable demands, Keynes actually reduced such demands. However, the desire for higher quality has no natural limits.32According to the passage, John Keynes believed that_.A. desire is the root of both absolute and relative needsB. absolute needs come from our sense of superiorityC. relative needs alone lead to insatiable demandsD. absolute needs are stronger than relative needs33What do we know about the couple in Paragraph 3?A. They want to show their superiority.B. They find specialty important to meals.C. Their demands for food are not easily satisfied. D. Their choice of dinner is related to ideas of quality.34What does the underlined word “escalation” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?A. Understanding. B. Increase C. Difference D. Study35The author of the passage argues that _.A. absolute needs have no limitsB. demands for quality are not insatiableC. human desires influence ideas of qualityD. relative needs decide most of our spending第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项是多余选项。 As a child grows up, you may wonder how you can teach him to become a respectful adult. 36 A child who learns to respect not only learns to receive respect from others in kind, but also learns to respect himself.
