A photo competition guide B About 12 years ago, I began making a series of dolls called “Wee Mountain Folk.” At first, I made them from cloth but then began using a kind of polymer clay(软陶)called cernit. The cloth dolls were beautiful, but it was impossible to get the level of detail(细节)I can get with clay.First, I use wire(金属丝)to build the shape of the doll. Then I cover the head, hands, and feet around the wire using the cernit. Then I make the dolls clothes myself, using lots of different materials. The completed dolls are fixed onto hardwood bases made by my father, Jim Logan. Generally, the dolls I make show older people taking part in traditional activities. Ive always had a great respect for the older generation. Inspiration for the dolls often comes from people I know. Once I was caught looking too closely at the wrinkles(皱纹)on the face of one of my moms friends. But I explained that her laugh lines made her more attractive. Now I work as a teachers assistant, and while I was raising my two daughters, Keri and Sheryl, I could work on the dolls only late in the day. The girls loved to come downstairs the next morning to see whod arrived in the night. Its the detail that I enjoy working on the most. I once made a fisherman doll for a lady to give her father, including a tiny creel a basket used by fishermen for carrying fish. When the man got the doll, he immediately opened the creel to see what was inside. Luckily, Id made a small fish out of cernit and placed it in the basket. Hopefully my story will inspire others to try their hand at doll making I find it very relaxing and interesting.24. So, he and his wife, Oltita went to Bucharest, the capital city of Romania to get legal papers to move to Germany. However, when they arrived, they were surprised by what they saw. “Hundreds of street children were living in a busy and dirty city of two and a half million people. Many of them were using drugs. They all seemed lost. Most of them were under ten years old. Oltita had tears in her eyes,” Catalin said. Many of these streets children were orphans (孤儿). They had grown up in the government orphanages, but had run away. They thought any place would be better than the orphanages. But the streets were cold and hard. The winters were freezing. The children had to sleep in warm sewers (下水道) under the ground. Many of the children even became involved with crime and violence (暴力).The Bacius did not like the sight of so many pitiful children in Bucharest. They wanted to leave immediately and go to Germany. However, that night, Catalin and Oltita stayed with a friend in Buchares. “The friend we were staying with was working with street children. I was deeply touched by what he and his fellows were trying to dothey were sacrificing (牺牲) their jobs and lives to save street children, ” Catalin said. After that visit, the Bacius completely changed their life plan. Instead of moving to Germany, they began working with street children in Bucharest. It might sound like science fiction, but professors at the University of Tokyo have taken the first steps toward making that a reality. The team recently introduced a human-shaped kitchen robot that can pour tea and other drinks into cups and serve them to guests. When teatime is over, the robot can also wash the dishes and put them away.In California, another interesting kitchen robot has been developed, called Readybot. It can pick up objects and either store them in cabinets (橱柜) or put them in the trash. It also carries a separate floor-cleaning robot that can operate by itself. Unlike the Japanese robot, Readybot just looks more like a large box with arms and wheels.Readybot was created by engineers and designers who established a club called the Readybot Challenge. They believe that in the future millions of robots will be needed in homes to perform ordinary household tasks. Readybot is just the first step in their plan to create a robot that can do jobs not only in kitchens but in other rooms of homes and in offices as well.Clearly there are technological difficulties to solve before robots can cook a complete dinner, and there are also many safety concerns (忧虑). Not everyone (especially parents) would be comfortable with the idea of robots in their house, manipulating hot pans and sharp knives. The European Commission recently funded(资助) a project to study these concerns. According to lead researcher Professor Chris Melhuish, “Enabling robots to work safely with humans is a key need for the future development of robotics.”32. Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine(常规), or clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar and so on. 36 But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.1. Get Out of Bed EarlierIf you normally get up at 7:30 am, try getting up at 7:00 am. That half hour might not sound like much, but it could be time that you use to exercise, to read that book youve been planning to finish. 37 2. Do the Important Tasks (任务)FirstOnce you get to work, get the important ones done first (not the easy ones, or even the urgent(紧急的) ones). You can afford to spend at least an hour working on big, important things rather than on all those little urgent ones. 38 The urgent tasks will still get done, and you wont miss the important ones.3. Reduce Interruptions(干扰)If colleagues(同事) have a habit of hanging around your desk to chat, or if the phone is constantly ringing, you might find that it takes you half the day to finish a simple thing like writing a letter. Frequent interruptions dont just eat up time, they also break your concentration. When youve got a big task to focus on, let your calls go to voicemaill(语音信箱). 39 Wearing headphones makes it less likely that people will try to start a conversation.4. 40 A few minutes chatting, browsing the web, and so on, can easily turn into hours of wasted time over the course of a day. When youre working, work. If your concentration is slipping, it is better for you to go and get a glass of water, or stretch your legs a bit. And if youre facing a difficult task, try breaking it into small steps or stages so that its easier to deal with.AStay Focused on Your WorkBTake Breaks When NecessaryCIf you have an office door, close it.DIf you work like this, youll usually save time.EWould you want me to make your day longer?FI cant magically make all your days 25 hours long.GOr simply to get your day off to a calm and organized start. A few years ago when my daughter was about two years old, I went through a difficult time.
