Ability objectivesSs will be able to learn about why Ben Smith wrote the letter to Miss Li after reading, Ss will also have to learn how to read a letter and get the main reading shills including parts of speech (n. adj. adv. V. prep.)二. Teaching points(1) key points Ss can talk about Ben Smith, Miss Li, Animal Helpers, Lucky, retell why Ben Smith wrote the letter to Miss Li. (2) difficult points new words, pharses: disabled, blind, deaf, difficulty. train, training, excited, carry, understand, make a big difference to ,be unable to etc. 三. Teaching aids Multi-media 4. Teaching procedures Step 1 Guide inA riddle A lot of people keep them as pets at home. People say they are the best friends. People like them because they are clever. Ss may easily get the right answer(dog). Then talk about dogs such as Do you like dogs? Why do you like dogs? Do you have a dog in your home? Whats its name?etc, make real communications. Give Mr Wangs dogs information and try to describe. Step 2 Presentation Watch a video about Ronas life and her dog Ss have to answer the following questions: T; Can she? Ss; No, she cant .T: She is unable to She is disabled. She is unable to do normal things Make a lot of examples of normal things and try to make Ss understand normal things means everyday activities. Step 3 Discussion(four students a group) (1) Pictures show dog-training school, special trained dogs, dog-helpers, the blind, the deaf, the disabled. Ss may get the information “Dogs are good helpers for the disabled, the blind, the deaf.” (2) Make request and have discussions T: How can disabled men get dog-helpers? No.1. Buy one. You have to spend a lot of money(500.000-100.000).A discussion: Can Rona buy one ?No, she cant. She is disabled. Its very expensive. No.2. She can get one from Animal Helpers for free because this group was set up to help disabled people. The money comes from donators (捐助者). And its very lucky if you can get one from Animal Helpers because there are so many disabled people in English, and they dont get enough dog-helpers. Rona is lucky and Ben Smith is also very lucky because he also got a special trained dog. So he gave the name “Lucky” to his dog-helper.T: What do you think of the name “Lucky”? Is it a good name? Is it speclial?T: Ben may think it will bring good luck for him.In fact, Lucky makes a big difference to his life. Tell Ss that make a big difference means change. A dog-helper changed his life. Step 4 Lets read the letter Period 1 Ss read Para 1, draw a mind map. (1) Show the picture of the letter and teach “letter”( point out there are four paragraphs in the lettter), ask a student to read the first paragraph for the class . (2)Show the picuture which is on the textbook, brief introduction to the people and the dog Lucky, discuss Animal Helpers and write the following information on the black. Ben Smith is a disabled people. Miss Li is a donator. She gave money to. Animal Helpers is a group that was set up to. (3)Lets draw a mind map A mind map Miss Li sent money to Animal Helpers trained dogs for. Ben Smith thank Miss Li for her_ Kind(adj.)-kindness(n.) (4) Lets use the mind map to make true sentences by matching the different parts. (2d.in the textbook) Period 2 Ss read Para4 and ask the purpose Ben write to Miss Li. Why did Ben write the letter to Miss Li? (1). .to thank her for. (2)to tell her. Guide Ss to read the fourth paragraph and get the information sentence“I could show you how he helps me”. Point out“he” means Lucky, “me” means Ben. Change the sentence and retell: Ben would like to thank Miss Li for giving money to Animal Helpers/changing his life and tell her how Lucky helps him. Ask more questions: What does Ben think of Lucky? Its a fantastic (great) dog. Period 3 Ss read Para 2&3 with questions, listen to the letter then answer questions. Q1: 1.How long was Lucky trained ? Q2: Is Lucky clever enough ? Ss read first, listen to the whole letter , at last make Ss reply. Step 5 Lets share some useful reading skills (1) The first sentence is important. “Id like to thank you .” Its a thank-you letter. (2) Why did he write this letter ? If you get the right answers, it will tell us what happened. (3) parts of speech difficulty/difficulties(pl.)= something that is diffcult Step 6 Parts of speech (1) Revise the pronunciation of “n. adj. adv. v. prep.” (2) Choose the parts of speech of the following words. difficulty(n.) kindness(n.) easily(adv.) training(n.) different(adj.) difficulty(n.) Carry(v.) (3) Look at the list of words below. Circle the part of speech of each word and make sentences with these words. (2c.) Step 7 Lets imagine the lives of the disabled(pictures) Ss learn to describe and talk about the disabled by referring the pictures and the given language materials. (1) A game Cover the eyes of a student and ask him to close the window. (2) Read the information of the given pictures and talk about the disabled people. The disabled/blind/deaf cant do normal things easily. Its difficult for her to. He/she has no., but he/she can. His/Her spirit: Never gives up.
