Im one of your classmates in this university. I was told that an international student would come to our class . And weve been looking forward to seeing you. Welcome, Mike.Mike: Thank you. Nice to meet you! Zhang Ke: Nice to meet you, too! Im here to see whether you need any help. Mike: Thats very kind of you, Zhang Ke. Im going to go to the Registration Desk this afternoon, but I dont know how to get there. Zhang Ke: OK. Mike, let me show you the way. When will you go? Mike: How about 3 oclock in the afternoon?Zhang Ke: Thats fine. Oh, look. Thats Dr. Wang over there. He teaches in the Language College. Maybe youd like to meet him. Come on in. Connie: Wow. Looks like the party is in full swing. Zhang: Yeah. And theyre eating me out of house and home. Want some beer or a Coke? Oh, Id like you to meet my sister. Shes visiting for the weekend. Connie: Oh. Which one is she?Zhang: Shes sitting on the sofa over there. Connie: You mean the young woman with the red sweater and the long black hair? Zhang: Yeah. Thats right. Let me introduce her to you. I just know you two will hit it off. Youre both so outgoing and adventurous. She likes hiking and climbing. Connie: Uh, and whos the guy sitting next to her? Uh, the one with the suit jacket and flashy green tie?Zhang: Oh, thats Bob, my martial arts teacher. Connie: Martial arts teacher! I never knew you were into that. Zhang: Yeah, I started about two months ago. Come on. Id like you to meet them.Dialogue 4 Working as a SalespersonAnn: Have you ever worked part-time ? Paul: Yes , I have. I worked after school and during summers for a minimum wage, and the job helped pay for my freshman year of college. Ann: What kind of job did you do ? Paul: I worked at a bookstore on campus. Ann: Did you have any other jobs ? Paul: Yes. I brewed coffee in the Student Union and worked as a waiter in a restaurant. But selling books was one of the most satisfying jobs.Ann: Why do you like the work at the bookstore so much ?Paul: Because I have always remembered the pride I felt in helping my customers. Working as a waiter was much harder, because everyone was always in a hurry, and some customers didnt give any tips.Dialogue 5Sharing InformationLi: Hi, Tom. I met you at the English Corner. Tom: Hi, Li. Are you surprised I remembered your name? Li: Yes, because so many Chinese have similar names. Tom: You asked me how you could learn more about my interests, so I brought you some of my favorite magazines. Would you like to read them?Li: Of course. I noticed a picture of Britney Spears on the cover. Do you like her? Tom: Yes. Would you like to have a look at her website? It has some great pictures. My college in America also has a website. You can even see a picture of my dorm. Li: Can I get a list of all the majors and all the classes at the college, too?Tom: In fact, we use the computer to register for the classes. Li: Lets go to the net bar together. Tom: Great! Afterwards we can go to the library and you can help me learn how to use it.Dialogue 6 Voluntary WorkWang Li: Could you tell me where you were studying at that time? Ernest: I was studying at the University of Sydney. Wang Li: Oh, really? Wasnt Sydney the host city for the Year 2000 Olympics? Ernest: Yes, it was. I enjoyed the games very much. Wang Li: What did you do during that period? Ernest: Actually, I was working as a volunteer in the athletes village. Wang Li: A volunteer? Thats very interesting. What kind of work did you do? Ernest: I was on the transportation team.Wang Li: Did you find your work helpful? Ernest: Yes, and what I did was part of the effort to make athletes feel at home during their stay there. Sometimes I even got to socialize with the athletes in the evenings.Dialogue7 Learning Student: Excuse me, Professor Smith, Im so worried about my English writing ability. Could you give me some advice on how to improve my writing? Professor: Well , dont worry about it. As we all know writing is a bit difficult. Student: Yes. I often find myself at a loss for what to write and how to write.Professor: I see. Writing is a kind of productive skill. Its a way to express oneself. Student: But, the thing is Im often short of words or expressions, and I find it difficult to get started. Professor: In this way, youd better do some more reading first, because writing is closely related to reading. It relies on your vocabulary and your understanding.Student: Yes, then could you show me some tips, so that I can improve my writing rapidly? Professor: You know, there is no shortcut to success. If you want to improve your writing, you should read more and write more, because practice makes perfect.
