Through reading the novel and references,and watching movie in the internet,I show my opinions in the next.Distinctive charactersThree types We can see clearly what kinds of person they are as soon as they appeared in the story.The author modeled three types of characters.One type ,the Evremondes,they stood for the aristocrats;their firm philosophy is to oppress people;they were the target,the author criticised.In the chapters Monsigneur in Town and Monsigneur in the Country,we can know that the upper class lived a luxurious,extravagant and corrupt life.They lacked of morality and hadnt insights into the indicates of “the storm”.In Monsigneurparty,the upper class dressed gorgeously but talked nothing meaningful;they were almost ignorance and illiteracy,When the Monsigneours carriage dashed through streets and killed a child,he was indifferent and put the blame oon others,said “It is extraordinary to me ” , “that you people cant take care of yourselves and your children.One or the other of you is for ever in the way.How do I know what injury you have done my horses.”When Monsieur the Marquis went through the village and came upon a poor woman who petitioned a morsel of stone or wood.But he was impatient,arrogant and didnt want to give help at all.From those subtle plots,we see the aristocracts were cruel and social contradiction was serious. Second type,the revolutioners,their representatives were the couple Defarge.Deferge wife ,Therese was born into a form family and her brother and sister were killed by the Evremondes;she hated the aristocrats.Before the revolution,the author appreciated her tough personalities,great wisdom and extraordinary organization ability. The couple once helped the doctor escape from the jail .They are kind and full of justice;they hated the aristocrats and the ruling class;they show much sympathy for the poor and the downtrodden.With the development of the revolution,they have distorted personalities.They become crazy ,cruel and just want to revenge on all the aristocrats;they put Luicehusband Charles into jail and are indifferent to Luice and her little child,especially the Ms.Deferge who latter is killed accidentally by her own firearm,which is dramatic. Besides,her result showed that the author didnt support their acts to solve the social contradiction.The poor were the main participants of the revolution.The author described the poorsituation in Saint Antoine.They lacked food and worn in rags;they hated the aristocrats,but they had to bear torment.At the end of the revolution,the situation was out of control and people went mad and cruel.The author gave warns on the people who wanted to solve problems in violence. Third type,the ideal characters,they are Doctor Manette and Lucie,Lorry,Charles,and Carton.They are good example of using humanitarianism to solve social contradiction and using love to beat revenge which was the authordesired way. The doctor was harmed by the Mvremonde brother and he had revenge on them.However ,for his daughterlove,he discarded revenge.Charles was nephew of the Monsigneur;he condemned his familysin and gave up the title of nobility and property.One was the victim of the aristocratsoppression,tolerant;another is the heir of the aristocratic title,humane.At the same time,the two persons were linked because of Lucie and love.They got together and set up a harmonious farmily.We can see this happy life in the Chapter Echoing Footsteps. Mr.Lorry was an important role throughout the plots.He was a banker in Tellson Bank.He once did business with Doctor Manette and then helped his daughter escaped to England.Afterwards,he helped the doctorfamily much and then developed precious friends with them.Lorry is shrew and steady.Lucie is warm,kind and mind.Doctor Manette is persistent and much-experienced.Charles is confident,gentle,and noble.The poor are the main participants of the revolution.The author described the poorsituation in Saint Antoine.They lacked food and worn in rags;they hated the aristocrats,but they had to bear torment.The characters of Carton I think Carton has complex characters,who is uneasy to understanding.He appears in Chapter A Sight.“seemed to be concentrated on the ceiling of the court”,which presents him to be rambling and different to others around.He fell in love with Lucie at the first sight of her.While what he thought is always contrary to what he said.He lovesLucie but said that she was“a blonde doll” during the talk with Mr.Stryver.He hadstalents which showed in the court defending Charles and in the rescue Charles,but he was volunteer to be “a dog ”of Mr.Stryver.He has a baffling self-abasement when facing Luccie;he could sacrifice his life for his love for Luice;he muddled along without any aim and at last he finally made a right choice.As he said in the book “ It is a far,far better thing that I do ,than I have ever done;it is a far,far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” In a word ,he is a paradoxical person as well as respectable.The structure The novels structure both pluralism and integrity.Pluralism means that every chapter is composed by certain persons,events and settings.Every chapter has one single story.Integrity means that the novel was made up by characters,plots and clues.The author used foreshadowing writing skills to piece together the whole story .For example,in the Chapter Knitting,a repairing road worker told the revolutioners about how Monsigeur abused the poor and the downtrodden in the road accident and Ms.Defarge knitted the name into the knit.However,the author referred to knitting earlier before and the knit was regarded as a list of enemiesnames;it gets through the whole novel;its the clue.In the Chapter The Wine-shop,there talked about two events:peoplereaction to the broken wine barrel;Luice met her father in the shop.The barrel was broken,which predicted the next plots,symbolizing the revolution breaking out. “The time was to come.when that wine too would be spilled on the street-stones,and when the stain of it would be red upon many there.”The red wine symbolized the blood.This plot foresees the plots in the Chapter The Sea still rises,Fire rises,describing the spectacle of revolution.Dramatic Plots I find many dramatic plots in the novel which connect every chapter closely and ingeniously.The two heroes in the novel resemble in appearance but differ in personalities.They both loved Lucie.That also lays base on the possibility that Carton could take place of Charles to go guillotine.In fact,the relationship between characters is a little complex.In the Chapter The Substance of the Shadow,from the letter Doctor Manette wrote ,we can see clearly and surprisingly that Charles father and uncle once persecuted the doctor,besides Charles was the son-in-law of the doctor.Whats more,it was the the letter that sentenced Charles to death.And family referred to in the leterr was the Ms.Defarges,besidesthe Defardes were the old servants of the doctore. In Chapter A Hand at Cards ,there was an important person ,named Barsad helped Carton to go into the jail,then helpled Chaerles out.Barsad once framed a case against Charles.While Miss Pross called him Solomon,her brother;and Jerry(the messenger of Lorry）said that he was a spy-witness at the Bailey.
