Lesson10 The loss of Titanic The great ship, Titanic, sailed for New York from Southampton on April 10th, 1912. She was carrying 1316 passengers and a crew of 89l. Even by modern standards, the 46,000 ton Titanic was a colossal ship. At that time, however, she was not only the largest ship that had ever been built, but was regarded as unsinkable, for she had sixteen watertight compartments. Even if two of these were flooded, she would still be able to float. The tragic sinking of this great liner will always be remembered, for she went down on her first voyage with heavy loss of life. Four days after setting out, while the Titanic was sailing across the icy waters of the North Atlantic, a huge iceberg was suddenly spotted by a look-out. After the alarm had been given, the great ship turned sharply to avoid a direct collision. The Titanic turned just in time, narrowly missing the immense wall of ice which rose over 100 feet out of the water beside her. Suddenly, there was a slight trembling sound from below, and the captain went down to see what had happened. The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged. Below, the captain realized to his horror that the Titanic was sinking rapidly, for five of her sixteen watertight compartments had already been flooded ! The order to abandon ship was given and hundreds of people plunged into the icy water. As there were not enough life-boats for everybody, 1500 lives were lost. 二、New Words1. colossal adj.庞大的(= large in size) - A ship Titanic was colossal.- a colossal monument - a colossal statue big (adj. 大的;重要的;量大的)- You give me a big surprise. - He is a big person.(重要的) - The box is big.large( adj.大的;多数的;广博的) - an empty large box - a large number of peoplegreat ( adj.伟大的) -He has the potential to be a great player.vast( adj.辽阔的) - vast desertimmense(adj.极广大的, 无边的) -an immense stadium -an immense icebergenormous (adj. 庞大的,巨大的) - We had an enormous lunch. - He made an enormous success.giant(n. 庞大的, 巨大的) - a giant persontremendous ( adj. 极大的,巨大的;惊人的) - The plane is travelling at tremendous speed.huge( adj.巨大的,庞大的,无限的) -a huge stone -a huge sum of moneytitanic( adj. 巨大的) - The ship is titanic.2. watertight adj. 充满水(= be filled with water)- The ship is flooded.be flooded with被淹没;大量涌入;充满 - The room was flooded with moonlight. - Our classroom is flooded with sunshine. - be flooded with fresh thoughts满脑子新思想flood n.洪水(- in flood 洪水泛滥) - During the rains, the river is in flood. -The flood swamped the whole village.5.float v. 漂流)Eg:They will also float if you drop them in the water. Eg: The white cloud of smoke floated away. 6.tragic adj.悲惨的a tragic accidenttragedy n.悲剧, 惨案- in tragedy以悲剧形式 - The holiday ended in edy n. The novel is comic and tragic. 7.liner n.班船 A liner is a large ship in which people travel long distances, especially on holiday.客轮Then he would take an air liner to another city for travel. 8. voyage n. Darwin was generally healthy before his 5-year voyage on the Beagle , although he was seasick for most of his time at sea. journey n. As the old Chinese saying goes, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.Similarly, there is a saying in the West which reads, Rome was not built in one day.9. iceberg n. The plane collided with the mountain.Racing up the stairs, he almost collided with Daisy.conflict n. 和某事(某人)相抵触 - My idea conflicts with yours.12. narrowly adv. He fired two shots, both missed.avoid/ evade /keep away from+doing 14. slight adj. I have a slight cold. / a slight headache.
