Good morning ladies and gentlemen.Today we will study a new lesson-Another School Year-What For? I guess you have prepared this lessons before class. In this forty-five minutes, we will have four parts. Firstly, we do some pre-reading activities. In this period, you will have a discussion. I introduce the background to you, and then you try to analyze the structure of the text.In partII, we study the details of the text, then have summary,and at last, I give you some homework.I Pre-reading activities1. DiscussionWhat is the purpose of college education?I will give 3 minutes to discuss. Why do you go to college? for living or making a living or making fortune?In this article, the author points out that a universitys purpose is not only to give its students sufficient training for a career, but also to put them in touch with the best minds of the past, including techniques and spiritual resources of mankind. By this way, they will become specialists and civilized member of society as well.2. Background information(1) Jonh Ciardi(1916-1986), was an Amerian poet, critic and translator who helped make poetry accessible to both adults and children. He ever translated Dantes Divine Comedy.This text is adapted from a speech he made at the College of Men Rutgers University as an associate professor of English at the opening ceremony of the 1954 school year.注:Associate professor (副教授)、deputy(副官)、by-product(副产品)、subtitle(副标题)、subtropics(副热带)、assistant(副手)、deputy director(副主任)、vice-premier(副总统)、side effect(副作用)、vice-chairman(副主席)(2) William Shakespeare(1564-1616) is the most famous poet and playwright. In the first part (from paragraph 1-8), the writer describes his encounter with a student.
