Embrace What Life has Given You “Darkness gives me dark eyes but I use them to search for light” a famous poem that comes from China reminds me of Andy, the hero in The Shawshank Redemption. In 1947 he is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at the Shawshank Prison. However, Andy was not the murder. There is a scene where all the prisoners idle around the playground, Andy looks like he is strolling in a park with a smile. Nobody would say he likes prison, however, instead of feeling miserable of life, Andy tries to accept what God has given him and finds redemption for himself. As the ancient Chinese poet Fang Zhong Yan said, “No happiness for what you have. No sorrow for who you are.” Unfairness is a universal human experience; the only way in which one can overcome the frustration caused by the unfairness is by first acknowledging and coming to terms with that frustration. And, it is better to regard the transient loss as part of our life experiences and accept what is destined to be. Later, Andy approaches inmate Red and orders from him a rock hammer. He used this small, tiny hammer to tunnel a route to his freedom. Not only by doing this to flee Shawshank but also utilizing his own financial knowledge to work as a tax consultant for the prison guards and even Warden Norton in order to seek a better life in prison. Nevertheless, it was in 1965 that something extraordinary happens Andy is informed of the real murderer for his case by a younger prisoner named Tommy. Hoping that he is able to get a new trial with Tommys help, Andy turns to Warden Norton but only got rejection and solitary confinement. Right after Andy is released from confinement, he is missing from his cell the next day. In a fury over Andys disappearance, the warden throws one of Andys rocks through a poster, revealing a large hole that Andy had used to escape. It proves Andy spent years chipping away at the wall of his cell with his rock hammer, using the posters of Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe and Welch to conceal it over the years. To my surprise, after his escape, Andy assumes the fake identity of Randall Stevens, which he created earlier for the purpose of concealing the wardens embezzlements and withdraws the funds that he had deposited over the years for Norton and sends evidence of the scams to a local newspaper. As the movie continues, I cannot help feeling excited for the genius Andy. As we know, all prison inmates have plenty of time. Their use of it is quite different from one another. While Andy uses his time to realizing his hope, Red simply endures his sentence. Time is an equal opportunity employer. We all have the same 24-hour a day, some people just do more with it. Do you have to cram to get ready for exams? Yet some of the busiest and most successful students get good grades and find enough time for romance and leisure. How do they do it? They set goals, priorities, grasp chances and invest their time accordingly. How well you manage your time is the most essential study and life skill you ever need. Can you spent 20 years chipping away at the wall of a cell with a rock hammer? Some people just do more with the 24-hours. “Forget that there are places in this world that arent made out of stone. That theres something inside that they cant get to, they cant touch. Its yoursHope.” Andy said. Suppose you were locked in a cell and sentenced to lifelong imprisonment, what would you do? It is the hope that guided Andy towards the redemption. It is the longing of living outside that encouraged him to seek solution of prison-break. “Let me tell you something, my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane. Its got no use on the inside. Youd better get used to the idea.” Red said. For Red life, his role inside the prison is all that he knows; it defines his very being, if this were taken away from him he would be unsure of his role in society and live in fear all the times. While Andy, he had been able to stave off the forces of the institution, to remain a free man in spirit if not in flesh. This is all because of the four letter word - hope. When we face the difficulties and unfairness in our life, what matters is the attitude towards that. It is useless for us to cry over spilt milk or complain the bad luck we have. What matters most is to have hope in our mind. Music is an antidote to the pain in us mentally and physically. Although Andy broadcasted Mozarts music in Shawshank, he had to pay with two weeks in the hole. To Andy, music is not only something beautiful and enjoyable, but something that can give him a taste of freedom. I cannot agree more with the proverb that music sets man free. When I have came across difficulty or something upsetting, I always resort to music. In this way, music refreshes my mind and soul and helps to ease my pain. Time, hope and music are three important ingredients in our life. They are always around us if we embrace our life.
