Listen to her talking to Brian about her concerns. BRIAN:Morning, Sandra. SANDRA: Morning. BRIAN:You dont look very happy. Whats wrong?SANDRA: Oh, nothing. BRIAN:Really?SANDRA: Well, actually Im worried about my daughter. BRIAN:Tina? Has something happened to her?SANDRA: Not yet, But Im worried that it might. BRIAN:What do you mean?SANDRA: Well, she wants to travel around the world for a few years. BRIAN:That sounds great. All young people should travel before they settle down. They can learn so much that will help them in the future. SANDRA: But travellings so dangerous these days. BRIAN:Not really. Not if youre careful and youve done some research about the places youre going to. SANDRA: I just keep worrying that something terrible will happen to her. BRIAN:Look, Sandra. Tinas a clever girl. Shes not going to do anything silly. As long as she follows a few simple rules, it is very unlikely shell have any problems. SANDRA: What kind of rules?BRIAN:Well, I suppose the most important thing is to pay attention. SANDRA: Pay attention to what?BRIAN:Well, for instance when you travel you dont always know about local customs. So you need to watch what other people are doing and learn what is acceptable behaviour and what isnt. You cant just go around behaving in exactly the same way as you do in your own country because that could get you into trouble. SANDRA: That makes sense. BRIAN:Its the same thing about deciding where to go and where not to go in a foreign country. For a start, you can ask the advice of locals. If they tell you a certain part of a city is dangerous or a particular town is not very friendly towards strangers, then it would be a good idea to stay away. But you can also observe the people around you. If they seem unfriendly or dangerous, then you should leave immediately. You have to learn to judge people by how they behave towards you. SANDRA: Mmm. I wonder if Tina can do that. She trusts everyone. BRIAN:Well, it wont take her long to learn who she can trust and who she cant. Perhaps you can persuade her to travel with some one who is more experienced, at least for a little while. SANDRA: Mm. Good idea. I think Ill suggest that to her. Sample answer key for Exercise 1:Brian and Sandra are probably work colleagues who know each other reasonably well. Evidence:They greet each other with “Morning”, a common greeting at the beginning of a workday. They call each other by their first names. Brian knows the daughters name and also something about what kind of person she is so he has met her more than once. Brian may be older than Sandra or have a higher status in the company or it may just be that Sandra often asks Brian for advice. Evidence:Sandra listens to Brians advice carefully and appears to value it. Answer key for Exercise 2:1 She wants to travel around the world for a few years. 2 Sandra thinks travelling is dangerous. 3 Brian thinks it is good that Tina wants to travel as she will learn a lot that will help her in later life. 4 Brian suggests Tina should tlavel with a companion, preferably with someone who is more experienced than her. Sample answer for Exercise 3:Research the places you are going to visit. Pay attention to what is happen
