A days waitHello, everyone. In my two exercise periods I will talk about the following content. This is my teaching procedure as follows.First, I will ask one or two students to retell the whole passage that I explained last week. In this way we may know the summary of the text.Second, I will talk about the theme and writing style.Third, important phrases and expressions are useful for us and detailed reading of the passage is also important. Lastly, I will ask students to give the keys to the exercises from page 141 to page 148.Last week we learned about the text A days wait. We know a 9-year-old American boy has been waiting a whole day for death. He has got ill, just a flu and his temperature is 102 degrees. At that time he thinks his illness is very serious and dangerous and he is going to die. Why does he think hes going to die? Because he heard the doctor say his temperature was 102 degrees. And when he was in France, the boys told him that no one can live with 44 degrees. And at the end of the story we know it is just only a misunderstanding. This is only the expression of different thermometer.After knowing the main idea of the text, we know the theme of the passage is the death and courage. When a man is in the face of death, what should he do? Or there is the potential possibility of death, he will show enough courage？Death is a natural part in our life. People avoid talking about death because we are afraid of it. But in fact death awaits all men, its our inevitable ending. If we make careful consideration and preparation beforehand, we may be more confident to face it. Although most people are afraid of death, there are certain people who face death very peacefully and confidently. The author of the text, a famous American writer, Hemingway often thought of courage as a persons ability to be calm and controlled in the face of death。 His theme is presented in his novel For Whom the Bell Tolls？ the story The Old Man and the Sea and in our textbook A Days Wait。 By misunderstanding a different thermometer the boy thought he was running a high fever and would soon die。 But he took his death bravely and waited quietly for it。 The boy showed us he had courage。 I think such a definition of courage is far from enough。 Courage should not be limited and related only to death。 In ordinary life there are common things that also show a persons courage。 For example， on a bus trip， a thief was trying to steal a girls purse。 Some people saw it， but kept quiet。 They were afraid to be revenged by the thief。 The brave stood out and stopped the thief。 Courage means truth and justice to me。 The person in a high position often hear songs in praise of him。 Some people are sincere。 Some are only flattering the superior in their own favor。 The leader also needs courage to welcome criticism as well as those who have the courage to criticize him。 Such courage may come from mutual understanding。 I think a man of courage will value truth and justice， and not hesitate in his actions to do what he thinks is right， There is no such word as fear in his dictionary。For a true writer, each book should be a moving beginning or he tried again for something beyond payment. He should always try for something that has never been done or what the others tried and failed. And sometimes with good luck hell succeed.And here we know the writing style is simplicity. The authors writing style is shown in the economical and effective dialogues of passage. For example; from para 45 to para 50About what time do you think Im going to die? he asked.What?About how long will it be before I die? You arent going to die. Whats the matter with you? Oh, yes, I am. I heard him say a hundred and two. People dont die with a fever of one hundred and two. Thats a silly way to talk.The father came back home to find his son stay in his bed still and his son was so serious that he had been waiting for the death for the whole day. The scene was so funny. From the simple sentences, we know the writing style is so simple.Next, some useful phrases and expressions are important.
