Sometimes it was as long as a year, sometimes as short as 24 hours. But always we were interested in discovering just how the doomed hero chose to spend his last days or his last hours. Such stories set us thinking, wondering what we should do under similar circumstances. What events, what experiences, what associations should we crowd into those last hours as mortal beings, what regrets?Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with gentleness, vigor and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of “Eat, drink, and be merry”. But most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill. (三)So much to learnIt was the last day of final examinations in a large Eastern university. On the steps of one building, a group of engineering seniors huddled, discussing the exam due to begin in a few minutes. On their faces was confidence. This was their last examthen on to commencement and jobs. Some talked of jobs they already had; others of jobs they would get. With all this assurance of four years of college, they felt ready and able to conquer the world. The approaching exam, they knew, would be a snap. The professor had said they could bring any books or notes they wanted. Requesting only that they did not talk to each other during the test.Jubilantly they filed into the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles broadened as the students noted there were only five essaytype questions.Three hours passed. Then the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. No one spoke as, papers in hand, the professor faced the class. He surveyed the worried faces before him, then asked: “how many completed all five questions?”Not a hand was raised.“How many answered four?”Still no hands.“Three? Two?”The students shifted restlessly in their seats.“One, then? Certainly somebody finished one.”But the class remained silent. The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I expected,” he said.“I just want to impress upon you that, even though you have completed four years of engineering, there are still many things about the subject you dont know. These questions you could not answer are relatively common in everyday practice.” Then, smiling, he added: “You will all pass this course, but remembereven though you are now college graduates, your education has just begun.”The years have obscured the name of this professor, but not the lesson he taught. 邹平双语学校中学部诵读材料 英英语组 课内(一).How to learn English wellEnglish is important and useful to us. How can we learn it well? Here are my suggestions.First, we should often listen to the tapes, English songs and programs. Watching English movies is also helpful to us. Second, we should speak English in class as much as possible. Dont be afraid of making mistakes. The more you speak, the fewer mistakes youll make. Wed better join the English club and practice with others. Third, we can read more English newspapers and magazines. Its good for us. But unluckily, it has also brought many problems, such as heavy traffic and traffic accidents.Traffic safety is everybodys business. We must obey the rules. Dont play football on the road .we can tell our parents not to drink before they drive, not to run through red lights, not to talk and laugh while driving etc.We can say cars are coming into our life, but only when everybody thinks traffic safety is everybodys business can we be safe driving on roads and walking on sidewalks.(三)How to protect our environment? / How to save the worldThe environmental pollution is worse and worse today. During these three years, I put most of my effort into my studies. I have a good studying habit. As a result,I get good grades on all the subjects. I am the best student in my class. I am always ready to help others when they are weak in their studies. I often explain prolems to them. When I help them, I also improve m
