Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came?Section A 1a-2d (Period 1) - Lynna Course type: Listening and speaking model Teaching aims:1. Knowledge aims:1) Vocabulary: rainstorm, at the time of, wait for, walk home,go off, heavily,begin, strange2) Sentences: What was the girl doing at the time of the rainstorm? She was What were people doing yesterday at the time of the Rainstorm?3) Grammar : the past progressive tense.4) Pronunciation:Pronounce correctly with natural intonation while speaking.2. Ability aims:1) Listening : Listen for key words or specific items in conversations.2)Speaking : Use target language to talk about the past events. Make conversation to do a survey Give a report using the information from the survey.3) Reading : Imitate and role play the conversation, Learn to read pictures and sentences then try to guessing before Listening.4) Writing : Try to write down some specific items while or after listening. Fill in a questionnaire in a group of four.3.Emotion aims:1) Students will be interested in talking about the past events and speak English confidently.2) Students can work in groups actively and help each other with learning tasks.3) Know the danger of the rainstorm.4. Learning strategies:1) Use different listening skills to understand the target language in natural speech,such as reading pictures and sentences,then trying to guess before listening ;listening for key words or specific items in conversations while listening.2) Use a questionnaire to make conversations with partners and get useful information ,5. Cultural awareness:Help each other in difficult times and earn how to deal with emergency situations in everyday life .Teaching important points:1. Enable Ss to talk about past events2. Give Ss listening practice with the target language.3. Get more Ss engaged in speaking activities and make conversations actively.4. Preparation1. Greeting and show a schedule teacher.Guessing what the teacher was doing at that time . (Aims: These pictures can warm up the lesson and make Ss interested in the topic today.)2. Class discussion: Show the three pictures with PPT and let the Ss guess what the people are doing. T: What is he doing? Ss: Hes Step II. Presentation 1.Lead-in T: Yesterday, there was a rainstorm. Where were they when the rainstorm came? Here are some reports.For example:A: Where were you when the rainstorm came?B: I was in the library.A: What were you doing when the rainstorm came?B: I was waiting for the bus at the bus stop.2. 1a. Where were the people at the time of the rainstorm? Match the statements with the people in the picture.1. _ I was in the library.2. _ I was in my house.3. _ I was on the street.4. _ I was at the bus stop.Step III.Practice 1.1c:Get Ss to make their conversations in pairs for 1 min.Then invite twopairs to show their ideas on the stage. (Aim:Ss can talk about past events using the target language orally.)2. Can you read the words ? (Aim:Generally practice reading new words in this class and have Ss notice the Chinese meaning of the words.)Step IV.Listening 1.T:These words will help you to do our listening practice better.Please listen for the key words and circle the correct response you hearin 1b.Then,check the answer. a. doing my homework / studying b. playing basketball / reading c. going to work / waiting for the bus d. walking home / shopping2. Lead Ss to read the pictures in 2a first,then get them to listen to the conversation and number the pictures1-5.Then ,check the answers.3. Listen again and complete the sentences. (Aim:Ss can do the listening better by guessing what kind of words might be used to complete the sentences.) 4.Listen and find out the answers from the tapescripts on the screen.Then ,check the answers. (Aim:Ss can have a general understanding of the conversation and check the spelling and other details of their answers.) Step V.Consolidation & Development 1. Listen first,then role play the conversation. (Aim:Ss imitate and pronounce correctly with natural intonation while speaking .) 2.Show Ss how to do a survey ,then lead them to work in a group of four to make a survey by asking three classmates what they were doing and where they were and fill in theQu questionnaire. (Aim:Ss know how to do a survey and take an active part in it.) 3.Invite Ss to give a report. (Aim:Ss can talk about past events and report their partnersideas fluently.) Step VI. Summary In this period, we learn some words and sentences about past events,do some listening practice ,and make a survey .Step VII. HomeworkWrite a survey report. Step VIII.
