Debating: The foolish man should move the mountains awayStatementGood evening, everyone! Thank you Mr. / Madam, and members of this house. Today, we have the motion that “the foolish man should move the mountains away or move his house away.” As you know, “The Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains is well-known Chinese ancient fable story. It shows us that many difficulties appear unachievable, but by determination, perseverance and the unremitting efforts, anything can be achieved. Yugongs spirit has a great influence on our Chinese people for generation to generation. Nowadays, young people think that the foolish man can move his house. That is totally wrong. As Nehru said,” Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will.” Dont you think the development of human civilization is the same as the foolish old mans work? Therefore, my proposal is that the foolish old man should move the mountains. Well, let me explain my proposal. Firstly, Id like to point out that this is a fable which is not real. Yugong is only an imaginary character in this fairy tale. It just gives us inspiration. That is, we should take the bull by the horns when we meet the difficulties. Secondly, we must believe that man can conquer nature. As Ernest Hemingway said, “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed, but not defeated. “Yugongs spirit is just as a good example for us. The way to face the difficulties is that we should face it, challenge it, and solve it! We never give up although there are many problems need to be solved, such as AIDS. Thirdly, we really need this spirit. If there cant be a spirit called “perseverance”, how can The Old Man and the Sea won the 54th Nobel Prize in Literature; how can we drive the Japanese invaders out of our country; how can George Walker Bush became the president of America; how can Forrest Gump won the Academy Award for Best Picture Of The Oscar? Its not a kind of choice. Its an outlook on life and values. Just what I said before, The Chinese word for “the foolish old man who removed the mountains ”is divided into two characters, one meaning is the meaning of the word itself; and the other meaning is an implication, that means face the music, it embodies the spirit of struggle, pioneering spirit definitely. Obviously here, mountain is a symbol of all kinds of difficulties. When we face great difficulty, we should persist, efforts to the end. We need this spirit absolutely. Well, please allow me to elaborate the view of our team.Firstly, as the saying goes: “Nothing is too difficult, if you put your heart into it.” We shouldnt be guided by destiny, and try to find a way to solve it! If the Japanese invaders come again, what will you do? Still moving your houses? And if we listened to the destiny when Xiongnv came and invaded our country, and just move away ,how can Han Dynasty begin？The Great Wall would never be built, and this Dynasty would not be in the history at all! Also, if we just move away without rebuilt our home after Wenchuan Earthquake, how can it be rebuilt so fast and even looks better than before?
