Directions: Read the following passages carefully and choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passage or dialog.A person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work. He may have the idea that he is not capable of it. It is easy to get such an idea even though there is not a good reason for it. A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental skills, or he may accept another persons mistaken estimate of his ability. A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will add to his belief about his incompetence. Alfred Adler, a famous psychiatrist, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought. In this way, they too developed the idea. He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day he became very angry at the teacher and the other students because they laughed when he said he saw how to do a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. When Adler succeeded in solving the problem, he rejected the idea that he couldnt do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His anger and his new found confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination, and purpose, and he soon became very good at arithmetic. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply ones ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability. 1.Whats the main idea of the passage?A. Because he does not know how to make full use of his mental powers.5.According to the author, many peoples mental pictures about themselves are _.A. correctB. in focusC. out of focusD. accurateQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.Im beginning to wonder whether my grandmother isnt right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays arent as well-mannered as they used to be. Whenever she gets the opportunity, she describes in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak only when she was spoken to, and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say please and thank you. Children in her day, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind their ps and qs. If you give her the chance she then takes out of her desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as hard-looking as that, you, too, would have been seen and not heard. Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her: Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were very heavy to a little girl, that she hadnt enough breath left to talk, let alone bad. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent away to school from an early age. That said, my childhood was much freer than Grannys. I went to school with my brother, and I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common language and we got up to the same trouble. I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wear a tight frock (女式礼服), and sew. 6.How can we understand children in her day were expected to be seen and not heard?A. Children were not supposed to be heard by others.B. Children were not supposed to hear their parents conversation.C. Children were not supposed to speak in the face of others.D. Children were not supposed to speak until asked to do it.7.What is the expression of mind their ps and qs supposed to mean?A. To mind their own business.B. To remember to say please.C. To remember to say thank you.D. To be well-mannered.8.Which of the following words can be used to describe Grannys feelings of her own childhood?A. Lonely.B. Dull.C. Proud.D. Happy.9.How did the author feel about her Grannys childhood?A. Disappointed.B. Unbearable.C. Respectable.D. Indifferent.10.Why did Granny often complain about modern childrens behavior?A. She missed those good old days.B. She was too harsh on children.C. She didnt like kids who talk a lot.D. She was not open to new things. Right Wrong To be marked by instructorPart 1 Understanding Long Conversations(每小题: 1 分;满分:10 分) (In the case of True/False type of questions, A stands for True and B for False, or A for Y, B for N and C for NG.) 小题得分对错学生答案Correct1.1AA2.1CC3.1CC4.1AA5.1BB6.1DD7.1BB8.1CC9.1AA10.1AASubtotal: 10Part 2 Understanding Passages(每小题: 1 分;满分:10 分) (In the case of True/False type of questions, A stands for True and B for False, or A for Y, B for N and C for NG.) 小题得分对错学生答案Correct1.1CC2.1CC3.1DD4.1DD5.1DD6.0DC7.1BB8.1AA9.1CC10.1CCSubtotal: 9Part 3 Compound Dictation(每小题: 1 分;满分:10 分) 小题得分对错学生答案Correct1.1kicked out ofkicked out of2.1hang outhang out3.1involvedinvolved4.1uselessuseless5.1failurefailure6.1middle-classmiddle-class7.1positivepositive8.0prove to her that what people said about me was wrongprove to her that what people said about me was wrong9.0I tried hard with my writing went to collegeI tried hard with my writing and went to college10.0I reacheed famous,on TV meet film starIm rich and famous, have been on TV, and met lots of film starsSubtotal: 7Part 4 Fill in the Blanks (with Prepositions or Adverbs)(每小题: 1 分;满分:10 分) 小题得分对错学生答案Correct1.1toto2.1InIn3.1toto4.1inin5.1ofof6.1FromFrom7.1toto8.1outout9.1outout10.0overofSubtotal: 9Part 5 Cloze (with Options)(每小题: 1
