UNIT JOB: 1Practical Safety Suggestions for the New Employee1. Watch your step. Look for slippery spots.2. Wear appropriate personal protective equipmentsafety shoes, hats, goggles, gloves, work vest. No loose fitting clothing. Wear long sleeve shirts or coveralls.3. Good housekeeping. Its everybodys job to clean up, pick up, put away.4. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are not permitted on the rig.5. Learn to recognize fire and explosion hazards. Observe smoking rules.6. Watch out for things that can fall on you. Stay out form under suspended loads.7. Long hair should be contained.8. Stay alert!UNIT JOB: 1UNIT MATERIAL HANDLINGJOB: 1 Trying onto Pipe with Hoisting Line(R) *1. Pre-plan jobDetermine that pipe to be moved is free to be lifted and will not cause any other material to shift.Observe intended path of pipe movement for obstructions.Determine new location pipe.Make certain signals between roustabout and hoisting device operator are visible and mutually understood.If necessary use a third person.Make certain load to be lifted is within safe working limits of hoisting equipment and rigging components.2. Lifting with shackle and chain Wrap chain around hoisting line with two wraps and shackle to hoisting line.Step away and signal to hoisting device operator.Use tag line if necessary.3. Lifting with chain and hook.Place chain around pipe with two wraps.Place hook over chain main line.Apple hook so it is turned out, away from load.Step back and signal to hoisting device operator.Use tag line if necessary.4. Lifting with sling.Utilize short, expendable slings of equal length between load line and load.Roll pipe onto sling.Run one end through the eye of the other, cinch tight down to pipe.Space both slings equal distance from each end.Place eye of each sling into safety latch of load hook.5. Assume safe position.If possible, remain In view of hoisting device operator and out of the direction of intended load movement.Do not obstruct hoisting device, operators view of pipe.6. Transit of load.Utilize tag lines on opposite sides of each end of pipe to control load and prevent swinging.UNIT JOB: 2-AUNIT MATERIAL HANDLINGJOB: 2-A Lifting and Carrying Mud Sacks(R)*1. Size up the job.Inspect load for weight and handling ease.Make sure you have firm footing. Check route of travel for obstructions.2. Assume correct position.Feet apart, one foot along object-one behind. Use sit down position bend at knees, keep back straight, not vertical. Tuck in chin.3. Grasp sack at opposite corners.Grip load with palms of hands. Keep arms and elbows close to body.4. Raise waist high.Lift with leg muscles not back.5. Move to destination. Changing direction of travel, shift feet rather than pivoting at waist.Be alert for any obstructions coming in path of travel.6. Set load down.Reverse entire procedure. Set bag down easy to prevent breaks or tears.UNIT JOB: 3UNIT MATERIAL HANDLINGJOB:3 Loading and Unloading Pipe-Land Rigs1. Spot truck as close as possible to pipe rack. Know hand signals to guide truck.2. Lay board from truck bed to pipe rack.Use oak 36 if possible. Secure to truck if possible.3. Un-bind load; remove chain.Load binders should be worked from ground lever. Use cheater pipe or bar-if possible on side away from rack.4. Use bar or pipe roller on top layer of pipe to start unloading.Work pipe from ground whenever possible. Stay behind pipe while rolling. If pipe is not stripped on truck be aware of possible swarms. If pipe is stripped on truck-chock all layers except top.5. After a layer is unloaded-roll pipe toward end of pipe rack.Make sure pipe rack ends are chocked. Have small wood to chock after rolling is completed.6. Repeat 4 and 5 until truck is empty.If more than one layer on pipe rack is required have stripping material available.7. Loading pipe repeat steps 1 and 2.Secure board to pipe rack.8. Roll pipe, from ends only, onto truck.Make sure pipe not being rolled is chocked. Assist trucker in binding load. Strip and chock each layer on truck.9. A fork lift is the preferred method for loading and unloading pipe.Load binders are finger mashers. Work with cheater pipe.UNIT JOB: 4UNIT MATERIAL HANDLINGJOB: 4 Loading and Off Loading Pipe-Water Operation(R) *1. Properly anchor the supply boat to vessel.2. Men are selected.Two men should be used on workboat. At least one experienced Roustabout should be used. Two men should be used on pipe rack deck.3. Briefing of job duties and hazards.Sea Conditions, Hand Signals, Safe Precautions, Obstruction on deck and sequence of load removal, Potential Hazards-CBCW.4. Place personnel on boat.Proper personal protective equipment must be worn.5. Select proper slings.Slings selected should be of proper size for loader sling-should be at least 30 feet in length and have proper pipe handing hooks.6. Lower slings to boat.Employees on boat should be watchful for any overhead movement of lowering of slings.7. Pick up pipe.Employees should have firm footing. Pipe should have thread protectors securely attached. Crane Operator should await signal from employees before lifting load. Tag lines attached to slings should be used to prevent load from swinging until free of obstructions on boat.8. Bring pipe on board vessel.Crane Operator should swing load away from boat as soon as the pipe is clear of obstructions on boat. Pipe should be lowered onto the pipe rack as soon as practical to stop any swing in pipe. After Crane Operator has set pipe on pipe rack, Roustabouts should use tag line to steady pipe while Crane Operator picks pipe back up to position pipe properly. UNIT JOB: 1UNIT USE OF TOOLSHANDJOB: 1 How to Fill a Grease Gun(R)*1. Wipe off lid grease can.Check for sharp edges. Wipe off with clean rag.2. Unscrew barrel of gun.Lay gun head on clean rag or clean surface.3. Pull back plunger and lock in slot.Make sure not to catch finger in slot.4. Fill gun with grease using paddle-or insert cartridge.Careful not to drop grease on floor-use clean paddle. Pull cap off end-following instructions on cartridge.5. Screw barrel back on head, wipe off excess grease.Use clean rag to wipe head off. Dispose of rag in proper container.6. Replace lid on bucket.Make sure lid is tight to prevent grease damage-clean up work area.UNIT JOB: 2JOB: 2 Use of Hand ToolsHammerUse hammer only if is in good condition and with head firmly attached to handle.1. Grip handle close to end.Choking handle increases chance for a smashed finger.2. Start driving nail by holding them near the head and hitting nail a light blow.Whenever possible always wear safety glasses. Striking lightly minimizes the possible of flying nails.3. Hold hammer firmly, check for path of swing and strike nail squarely.Watch out for overhead obstructions.40Cold Chisel 1. Select proper chisel for job.Must be big enough for job and mallet big enough for the chisel. Use chisel with cutting edge no wide than area to be cut.2. Hold a chisel close to its upper end.If mallet misses then hand wont get full force of blow.3. Hold chisel with thumb and force finger palm up, keep knuckles out of range.Hammers that miss can do serious damage to fingers and joints.4. Use no more force than necessary to make the cut. Chisel must be kept sharp. Mushroomed heads are dangerous because of the possibility of flying chips.5. When using chisel for chipping.Always wear eye protection. Protect others working close by either by goggles or erecting a screen or shield.Wrenches1. Select proper type and size wrench for the job.Know wrench types, crescent, pipe wrench, ratchet, box-end.2. Inspect wrench.Inspect for worn out sprung jaws, broken cages, spring faces, or bent handles.3. Place wretch so that jaws fit flat and square on nut or bolt head.Avoid working with wretch in cocked position.4. Take proper stance bracing against a backward fall by placing one foot behind the other.Do not place hand or body in a position that could be injurious if tool should slip.5. Pull on wrench using arm muscles rather than push.Pipe wretch, the fixed jaw is stronger than the movable jaw, so pulling force should be directed against the fixed jaw.Hacksaw1. Inspect saw.If handle is damaged or broken, replace handle or discard saw.2. Install blade teeth facing away from the handle.Use sharp blade.3. Use full and even stroke.Apple even weight to keep from breaking blade and sawing material crooked. Be sure hands will clear when using saw in a restricted place.Screwdriver1. Select and inspect tool.Handle smooth and undamaged, shank straight, end of bit neither blunted or nicked. Proper fit.2. Place small part in vise when possible.Avoid holding in hand.3. Apple hand pressure counter clockwise to loose screw.Never hammer on a screw driver as it may chip or break.UNIT JOB: 1UNIT USE OF TOOLSPIPE HANDLINGJOB: 1 How to Put on Chain Tongs1. Select tongs of sufficient size for job.Inspect pipe and threads for good condition. Clear area to allow room to work. Pipe size determines size of tong used.2. Inspect to see that teeth and chain are clean and in good condition.Check chain for broken links and pins. Check handles and jaws for cracks. Use wire brush to clean teeth. Goggles should be worn when wire brush or hammer is used.3. Pick up tongs with hand on handle.Pick up with hand approximately 6 behind jaws.4. Assume correct position.Feet apart, one near pipe and one back for comfortable stance.5. For make up: Place tong in A. Position Tongs should be brought up in a motion as jaws contact pipe. The chain should swing counterclockwise being caught with hand and latched in position to allow sufficient slack for tong jaws to bite pipe.B. Rotate pipe with tongs. Turn pipe to right. Cheater pipe should not be used. A larger set of tongs should be utilized for added force.C. When pipe is made up-remove tongs.6. Breaking OutA. Reverse-Makeup procedure with chain clockwise around pipe.As tongs are brought up, chain should swing around pipe clockwise to be caught by hand and latched in position. Turn pipe to left to back out.B. Removing tongs. A bump on the end of tong handle will relieve tension of chain and jaws when removing tongs.UNIT JOB: 2UNIT USE OF TOOLSPIPE HANDLINGJOB: 2 Installing Safety Clamps on Drill Collars1. Check for worn parts.Check springs, dies, cotter pins.2. Pick up clamp by the handles with both hands.Use proper lifting procedure.3. Wrap clamp around drill collar.About 4 inches above slips.4. Other employee install pin and tighten.Use proper clamp wrench. Do not use hammer to tighten nut.5. Tap segments lightly to assure proper contact with the collar.6. Removal of clamp. Reverse above procedure.UNIT JOB: 1UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 1 Throwing the Spinning Chain1. Check chain for damaged links.Repair, if necessary with tempered links of proper size. Do not use cold-shut links.2. Latch break-out (back up) tongs below lower tool joint.Have tongs balanced with counterweights and approximately 6 below tool joint. Get firm footing and use the proper handles to make the tongs bite.3. Wrap spinning chain 4 to 6 wraps around lower tool joint above the tongs (counter clockwise) 4. Stab new joint or stand into box of lower joint.Use shoulder to stab pipe. Keep hands clear of pinch point between upper joint pin and lower joint box.5. As cathead pulls chain, flip chain just above top tool joint.Fellow workers stand clear. Keep chain clear of tongs.6. Hold spinning chain at the tool joint.Use tail rope on end of chain. Have firm footing, take steps toward pipe as chain is wrapped.7. Latch make-up/lead tongs.Swing make-up tongs into place and latch on to top tool joint.8. Make both sets of tongs bite.Stand clear of tong arcwhen cathead is engaged. Get firm footing and use the proper handles to make the tongs bite on the tool joint.UNIT JOB: 2UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 2 Setting Kelly Back1. Cover mousehole. Stand to one side of rat (mouse) hole.2. Break Kelly.Do not stand behind tongs when breaking out Kelly.3. Secure tongs.Tie back tongs to keep out of work area.4. Lock rotary.5. Pull Kelly back.6. Lower Kelly in rat hold.Observe hose while lowering Kelly slowly.7. UN-latch hook. Attach pull back line or air hoist to steady the blocks.UNIT JOB: 3UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 3 Operating Drill Pipe Tongs on Breakout Procedures1. Visually check condition of tongs, tong dies, snub lines, breakout lines, breakout lines, clamps, etc.2. Assume proper position.3. Swing tongs to engage drill pipe; push on handle with left hand and at the same time pull on jaw handle with right hand to set the tongs in the bite position on the tool joint above the break, after back up tongs bite.Never palace hands between the tongs and the pipe. Keep hands and fingers out of the tong jaws. Watch out for backup man.4. Keep firm grip with right hand until tongs bite.Travel with movement of tongs.5. After connection is broken unlatch lower tongs with left hand keeping bite with right hand.Be alter not to place hands or fingers in a position between the swinging tongs and any other object. Keep feet apart and away from rotary table.6. Unlatch breakout tongs.Push tong arm with left hand.7. Be alert to swinging tongs.In case of a tight joint look to driller for instructions.Man on (back-up) Tongs1. Visually check condition of tongs, tong dies, snub lines, break-out lines, clamps, ect.2. Assume proper position.3. Swing tongs to engage drill pipe; push on handle with right hand and at the same time pull on jaw handle with left hand to set the tongs in the bite position on the tool joint below the level of the back up tong bite.Never palace hands between the tongs and the pipe. Keep tongs and the pipe. Keep hands and fingers out of the tong jaws.4. After connection is broken, backup man pushes long arm forward with right hand.Be alert not to palace hands or fingers in a position between the swinging tongs and other objects.5. Be alter to swinging tongs.The tongs should be secured when not in use.* In case of tight joint look to driller for instructions.UNIT JOB: 4UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 4 Measuring the Drillpipe on Rack 1. Get tape off tool board.Should know how to read a tape graduated in one-tenth.2. Proceed to work area.Do not run. Check for slippery surfaces.3. Size up job.Check for chocks on remaining joints. Check for obstructions.4. Check remainder of pipe.Inspect for possible pipe movement. Check for proper footing.5. Hook end of tape on shoulder of pipe.Be sure 0 (zero) is on end of pipe.6. Stretch tape out the length of pipe.7. Read tape at desired length.Tape should be read at shoulder of the tool joint.8. Replace tape back on tool board and return to work area.Be aware of proper footing.UNIT JOB: 5UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 5 Preparing Rig Floor for Mousehold Connection1. Wash floor, if needed.2. Be on floor when Kelly is down.3. Have tongs properly balanced and in good working order.All tong balancing material inside counter weight box. Keep tongs at proper working height.4. Have slips doped and ready.5. Keep Kelly cock wrench available.6. Have D.P. joint in mousehold prior to Kelly down.Proper tie on.7. Have spinning chain installed in proper manner.Keep chain clear of rotary table.UNIT JOB: 6UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 6 Preparing for a Trip1. Clear floor of unnecessary equipment.Clean drilling mud or oil from floor to prevent slipping. Make sure you have firm footing. Lift with leg muscles not back.2. Check, grease and level drill pipe tongs.Wear goggles when replacing tong dies.3. Check snub lines, breakout lines, and sheave.Check wire line clamps. Check line for fray, wickers.4. Check elevators. Check and dope drill pipe slips.Check slip handles, pins, segments (dies).5. Check condition of spinning chain and jerk line.Check condition of chain and tail of chain.6. Hang mud bucket.UNIT JOB: 7UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 7 How to Latch ElevatorsTrip out of Hold1. Employee standing in front of elevators, catch handles in each hand. Push elevator to clear drill pipe tool joint in rotary table. Latch around pipe as elevator is lowered past tool joint.Make sure elevator is clear of tool joints to prevent damage to tool joints.2. Other employee will place a hand on each elevator bail and push bails toward drill pipe helping to latch elevator.Be sure to see that latch is secured.UNIT JOB: 8UNIT TEAMWORK OPERATIONSJOB: 8 Preparing Drill Pipe for Use in the String 1. Remove thread protectors.2. Clean threads with a brush and proper solvent.Use of gasoline or diesel will cause tool joint damage.3. Inspect tool joint threads and shoulders for damage. (Both box and pin ends).Look for rounded threads and nicked shoulder. Report all damage to driller.4. Dope pin end and reinstall protectors on pin end.Hand tight.5. Roll pipe onto catwalk.While rolling, check pipe for straightness. Report all crooked joints to driller.6. Strap (measure) the pipe.Write length on box with chalk.7. Tie hoist line on pipe.8. Signal for joint to be picked up and set in mousehole. (remove thread protector before stabbing in mousehole.)Be aware of signals and what each means. When pipe is coming up ramp position your body to catch pipe and swing around pipe so pope is between the mousehole and your body. Keep feet apart and walk joint to mousehole.9. Insert j
