You can do it. Move those arms. Kick. My 7-year-old daughter was doing laps, and I wanted her to keep up with the other swimmers. She couldnt. Neither could she hear my frustration, because the swimming club would not allow parents on the deck. Parents waited in a glass balcony overlooking the pool. When she came up to greet me, ready to be hugged, I lit into her. Why didnt you try to finish the lap? How hard could it have been? My daughter drew away from me. You cant even swim, she said. Her words stayed with me. I asked myself: What does it take to learn something new? Did it help when someone criticized me? Before next weeks lesson arrived, I attended a swimming class for adults. When my daughter went to do laps, I went to the smaller pool at the other end of the club. Each week, Isabelle and I came up from our separate pools tired but happy. We shared what we had done, hugged, and went out for a treat. At the end of the eight-week course, I proudly showed her my first swimming badge (徽章).You can do taps with me now, said my daughter. No, not yet. I had made it across the pool, but couldnt finish its length. My arms had felt like lead, and my legs like rubber. More important than the swimming badge, though, I had earned a parenting badge. I had rediscovered the thrill and frustration of trying something new. My child was doing this every day- at the pool, at school, at home. Now, so was her mom.21. How did the author feel when she watched her daughter swimming? A. Upset B. Proud C. Afraid D. Nervous22. Why did the author attend swimming classes for adults? A. She showed great interest in swimming. B. She wanted to compete with her daughter. C. Her daughters words drove her to try new things. D. Her daughter encouraged her to take up swimming. B The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth , is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat. It is the elephants great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters. Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well. What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. 24. What is the passage mainly about? A. Disappearance of African elephants. B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. C. The effect of African elephants search for food. D. The eating habit of African elephants. 25. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean? A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state. C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions. 26. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage? A. They result from the destruction of rain forests. B. They provide food mainly for African elephants. C. They are home to many endangered animals. D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds. 27. The passage is developed mainly by_. A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes B. pointing out similarities and differences C. describing the changes in space order D. giving examples C Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I alwaystry to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents,I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table. I dont only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. Its equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldnt be here. But then I thought about the fact that hes 84 years old and I realized that I shouldnt give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all. I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that Im doing the right thing. Im buying myself peace of mind and thats the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being. 28. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule? A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated. B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working. C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better. D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone. 29. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to _. A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor B. meet her father who was already an old man C. join in the holiday celebration of the company D. finish her work before the deadline approached30. The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _. A. abandoned B. lacked C. avoided D. seized31. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Emotional Well-being B. The Two Saddest Words C. The Most Useful Rule D. The Peace of MindD Experiments under way in several labs aim to create beneficial types of genetically modified foods, including starchier potatoes and caffeine-free coffee beans. Genetic engineers are even trying to transfer genes from a cold-winter fish to make a frost-resistant tomato.A low-sugar GM strawberry now in the works might one day allow people with health problems such as diabetes (糖尿病) to enjoy the little delicious red fruits again. GM beans and grains rich in protein(蛋白质) might help people at risk of developing kwashiorkor. Kwashiorkor, a disease caused by severe lack of protein, is common in parts of the world where there are severe food shortages.Commenting on GM foods, Jonathon Jones, a British researcher, said: The future benefits will be enormous(巨大的), and the best is yet to come. To some people, GM foods are no different from unmodified foods. A tomato is a tomato, said Brian Sansoni, an American food manufacturer.Critics of GM foods challenge Sansonis opinion. They worry about the harm that GM crops might do to people, other animals, and plants. In a recent lab study conducted at Cornell University, scientists tested pollen(花粉) made by BT corn, which makes up one-fourth of the U.S. corn crop. The scientist dropped the pollen onto milkweed, a plant that is the only known food source of a butterfly caterpillar(毛虫). Within four days of feeding on the leaves, almost half of a test group of caterpillars died. This is a warning bell. said Cornell researcher Linda Raynor. Some insects that are not killed by GM foods might find themselves made stronger. How so? The insecticides are used on the crops to kill the pests. But GM plants produce a continuous level of insecticide. Insects relying on those crops may develop resistance to the plants and they may also develop a resistance to the insecticide. At the forum on GM food held last year in Canada. GM crops that have been made resistant to the herbicide might crossbreed with wild plants, creating superweeds that could take over whole fields. So where do you stand? Should GM food be banned in the United States, as they are in parts of Europe? Or do their benefits outweigh(胜过)any of the risks they might carry?32. The first three paragraphs try to give the idea that_A. GM foods may bring about great benefits to humans.B. GM foods are no different from ordinary ones.C. GM foods may have both benefits and harm.D. GM foods are particularly good to the kwashiorkor patients.33. Why is the pollen-sprayed milkweed mentioned in Paragraph 5?A.
