He worked for a good newspaper, and he liked arguing very much. He argued with anybody, and about anything. Sometimes the people whom he argued with were as clever as he was, but often they were not.He did not mind arguing with stupid people at all: he knew that he could never persuade them to agree, because they could never really understand what he was saying, and the stupider they were, the surer they were that they were right; but he often found that stupid people said very amusing things. At the end of one argument which George had with one of these less clever people, the man said something which George has always remembered and which has always amused him. It was, “Well, Sir, you should never forget this: there are always three answers to every question: you answer, my answer, and the correct answer.”1. It seemed to George as if _. A. it was more interesting to argue with as clever people as he was B. it was more interesting to argue with clever people than with stupid ones C. it was more interesting to argue with stupid people than with clever ones D. it was no good arguing with stupid people2. From the passage we can conclude that_. A. George did nothing but argue with others B. George was a man full of sense of humour C. George always won the arguments D. What George said was difficult to understand3. Why didnt George mind arguing with stupid people? Because _A. he wanted to win the arguments B. he wanted to make the arguments more heatedC. stupid people could be easily fooled D. what stupid people said could often give him greater pleasure4. What one of the stupid people said at the end of one argument could be considered very_. A. clever B. stupid C. strange D. special BEach Indian was supposed to keep his birth name until he was old enough to earn one for himself. But his playmates would always give him a name of their own. No matter what his parents called him, his childhood friends would use the name they had chosen. Often it was not pleasing, such as Bow Legs or Bad Boy. But sometimes a name fit so well that the youngster found it difficult to shake it off. If he could not earn a better one from a war later, he could be stuck with a name like Bow Legs for the rest of his life. The Indian earned his real name when he was old enough for his first fight against the enemy. His life name depended on how he acted during this first battleWhen he returned from the war, the whole tribe(部落)would gather and observe the ceremony in which he would be given his name by the chief. If he had done well, he would get a good name. Otherwise he might be called Crazy Wolf or Man-Afraid-Of-a-Horse. So an Indians name told his record or described the kind of man he was.A man was given many chances to improve his name, however. If in a later battle he was brave in fighting against the enemy, he was given a better name. Some of our great fighters had as many as twelve namesall good and each better than the last.An Indians names belonged to him for the rest of his life. No one else could use them. Even he himself could not give them away because names were given by the tribe, not the familySo no man could pass on his name unless the chief and the tribe asked him to do so.Sometimes an Indian would be asked to give his name to a son who had performed a noticeable deed. I know of only three or four times when this happenedIt is the rarest honor for a personthe honor of being given his fathers name.5. An Indian could be given the second name by_. A. his fatherB. the enemy C. the chief of the tribe D. his childhood friends6. The greatest honor an Indian could earn was_. A. a victory in his first battle against the enemy B. a name given by the chief C. a ceremony to get his real name D. the right to use his fathers name7. If an Indian had more than ten names, it meant that_. A. many people in the tribe liked him B. he was a great fighter C. he had a lot of friends D. he had fought in fewer than ten battles8. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage? A. The names given by the playmates of an Indian were usually not pleasant B. The life name of an Indian was earned in battles C. An Indian could throw away his birth name when he was old enough to earn one for himself. D. The Indians themselves were not allowed to give their names away. CThe gray-haired lady cant wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30years ago.Not all cases of Alzheimers disease look like this, but Alzheimers is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimers .In the early stages, people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs. While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brains nerve fibers(神经纤维), their effect is certain. Alzheimers destroys not only the patients, but also spouses(配偶), friends and families. What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimers disease? Though many reasons other than Alzheimers disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis(诊断)and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects. What feeling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimers disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesnt remember you are married.Life for the Alzheimers patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them.9. What can be inferred from the passage about the gray-haired lady? A. She has been living with her father. B. She was sad about the death of her father. C. She cant search for her father without being watched. D. She suffers from Alzheimers disease.10. When people suffer from Alzheimers disease, _. A. their families and friends will suffer from the same disease B. their families and friends will experience mental sufferings C. they will certainly die in 8 to 10 years D. they will forget everybody but their spouses11. Memory loss occurs _. A. from Alzheimers disease and nothing else B. from sadness, shock, anger, and so on C. for a number of reasons D. with changes in personality12. From the passage we know that _. A. early treatment may stop Alzheimers disease occurring B. it is still unknown what causes the changes in the brains nerve fibers C. nerve fibers in the brain will cause Alzheimers disease D. when one suffers from Alzheimers disease, he will be buriedD While football fans feel strongly angry and shocked about mistakes made by referees (裁判) because they cannot see clearly what has happened, a small German company is quietly pleased. For Cairos Technologies, mistakes made by referees are the kind of advertising that money cannot buy. The company has developed a tiny chip that fits inside a football and determines whether the ball has crossed the goal line, by being able to discover its exact location on the field. The world football organization, FIFA, has shown interest in the technology. It is very possible that the new technology will be used in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Weve been testing the technology at the main soccer stadium in Nuremberg for some time and more recently in an under-17 FIFA Cup in Peru, said Gunter Rohmer, a director of the company. The technology has performed well, and were pretty optimistic that it will be used at the games in Germany next year. The chip only weighs 12 grams, and is placed in the center of the football. It sends 2,000 signals a second to a receiver network of 12 antennas(天线),placed around the field. The receivers then send information about the balls location to a central computer, and because it works in real time, it can immediately tell the referee whether a goal has been scored. The chip even can tell when the ball crosses the line in mid-air. Oliver Braun, one of the inventors of the chip, says that feedback from German referees was generally positive. Germany sports-wear giant Adidas is also optimistic about using this kind of chip in other ball sports. FIFA aims to test the technology later this year at another game in Japan before deciding whether or not to introduce it in all 12 stadiums in Germany for next years World Cup.13. Carlos Technologies is pleased because _. A. football fans are angry with referees B. their new product can satisfy football fans C. their new product will have a good market D. they can sell a lot of football in the future14. I
