Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?Firstly, it is important to report news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories to those on TV.Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People dont want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspaper never print stories about planes landing safely, instead they print stories about plane accidents.Another factor is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. These lights are called jack-o-lanterns, which means “Jack of the lantern”.The children also put on strange masks and frightening costumes every Halloween. Some children pain their faces to look like monsters. Then they carry boxes or bags from house to house. Every time they come to a new house, they say, “Trick or treat! Money or eat!” The adults put a treat -money or candy-in their bags. Some children think of other people on Halloween. On September 13, 1955, Australian Premier Cahill announced an international competition for the design of an opera house. The mountains were first sighted by Governor Phillip when he was exploring the northern shore of Port Jackson in April 1788. Owing to the color when the mountains are viewed from a distant place, they were called Blue Mountains. To early colonists Blue Mountains seemed to be an impossible barrier to western expansion. He worked during the early part of the twentieth century, and his work is still used in advertising and design.Certain colors causes an emotional reaction in people. Dr. Luscher asked thousands of people about their reactions. He invented a test using eight colors-yellow, red, green, dark blue, grey, violet, brown, and black. Looking at the colors people chose, he worked out their emotional state. You can find his tests on the Internet, and see if they work for you.Dr. Luscher said, for example, that bright yellow means sunshine-a new day and a bright start. Green is the color of grass and trees. It means growth. Yellow and green show a positive state. Red is the color of blood, hunting, and war. It can be exciting, or it can mean danger. Dark blue, grey, and black are night colors. They could mean fear, or secret things. If you choose black or grey as your favorite color, you may not be feeling happy.Scientists did a test using unusual colors in food. They gave people blue rice, violet potatoes, and black apple juice. Most people said the food taste bad! But if they could not see the food, it tasted all right. So the color of our food influences our feelings about it.Food packaging design uses this information about colors. Sales managers said that sugar in green boxes did not sell. In blue ones, it did! Green seemed to mean “unripe” to people, but blue means “sweet”. Look at the packaging in your food store. Is the sugar in a blue packet? A well-known drink is sold in blue cans. The designers believe it means “sweet”. There are even companies that choose the best color to sell your product.1. What did Dr. Luscher do during the early part of the 20th century?_2. Where can a sick car be taken if its owner wants to know what is wrong with it? Thats right- a clinic.Auto clinics are a new and growing business. There are now more than 40 auto clinics in the US. Many more will be built in the next few years. How does a clinic work? A car is put on rollers that turn slowly, then faster. As the car is driven forward, the rollers turn backward. So the car is driven without going anywhere.Meanwhile a group of mechanics gives the car more than 100 tests with the latest equipment. The car climbs an imaginary hill and screams to an imaginary stop. Everything is checked, from wheel balance to brakes. After the checkup, the owner is told what is ailing his car and what it might cost for repairs. The checkup itself costs $5.95 to $9.95. The owner can have the repairs done anywhere. Most customers have them done in the clinic. Why do car owners often prefer these clinics to service stations? A clinic owner said, “Anything that is wrong with it will have to show up. In a clinic, theres no guessing about it. Now car repairs are scientific.” A car owner said, “A mechanic might have fooled around for two weeks without finding what the clinic uncovered in half an hour.” 1.
