Kern is remembered for the hundreds of songs he wrote for musical plays and movies. To a great extent, he led the development of the first truly American theater music. Jerome Kern began his career as a songwriter in theaters in London and New York City. Success came quickly. By the early 1920s, Kern was a successful young composer for Broadway musical comedies. He worked with each song until he was satisfied that the music was perfect. American musical plays at that time were still usually copied from European ones. Kern wanted to try something completely new. He thought a musical play should be a real work of art, not just a collection of songs and dances. He thought songs should help move the action of the play along, by showing a persons feelings. Kern wanted to do a truly American musical, with real American characters and real situations. In 1927, he found the story he wanted. It was the book Show Boat by American writer Edna Ferber. Show Boat takes place in the 1880s on a passenger steam boat that travels along the Mississippi River. The boat is called a show boat because singers and dancers entertain the passengers. The captain of the show boat has a daughter who is a singer on the boat. She falls in love with a man who earns his money by gambling with cards. The story dealt with some unusually serious issues for a musical. It showed the hard lives of African-Americans in the South. And it showed marriage between people of different races, which was against the law at that time. Although serious in places, Show Boat was not a tragedy. The public and critics loved it. Show Boat became the greatest work of American musical theater .Music critics said Kerns effect on musical theater was revolutionary. It was Kerns music that made the show a great success, which has been performed thousands of times all over the world.24. Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna (大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat. It is the elephants great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well. What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. 28. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?A. Improving the quality. B. Worsening the state.C. Fixing the time. D. Deciding the conditions.29. The passage is developed mainly by _.A. showing the effect and then explaining the causesB. giving examplesC. pointing out similarities and differencesD. describing the changes in time order30. What is the passage mainly about?A. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.B. The eating habit of African elephants.C. Disappearance of African elephants.D. The effect of African elephants search for food.31. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?A. They are home to many endangered animals.B. They result from the destruction of rain forests.C. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.D. They provide food mainly for African elephants. Forests and savannas as habitats,The eating habit,Disappearance都是很片面化的词语,不能起到概括的作用。 By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. DWhen you bite into a loaf of bread, youre eating a little slice of history, with roots that stretch back for millennia. But this basic and important food, which has dominated tables for thousands of years, is in a dangerous decline. According to a study, 32 percent of the purchased bread is being dumped in the UK. And in France a country whose breads are internationally well-known young people are eating 30percent less than a decade ago. Traditionally, bread has been a cornerstone of many cultures around the world. Wherever wheat was grown, bread was sure to follow. Its roles were just as varied as its origins. Bread could be used as an appetizer, a palate cleanser, a post-meal palate cleaner even as an entire meal itself. As its popularity grew, so too did its symbolic value. Christianity adopted bread as are presentation of Christ during religious ceremonies. “Breaking bread” with someone became a common symbol of friendship. The French even used to bring baguettes(法棍面包) home as a symbol of love to the family. But recently, the worlds love with bread came to fade. Some guess that the fast pace of modern life is changing peoples eating habits. Others believe its a reflection of health concerns. Bread is rich in complex carbohydrates(碳水化合物), a fact that could alienate(使疏远) anyone who practices a low-carbon or gluten-free(不含麸质物的) lifestyle. The shift against bread is also associated with its mass production. Extra yeast(酵母) and additives(添加剂) are added to the dough, to extend its shelf life. In the process, bread ends up being blanched(变白) and nutritious stripped. But dedicated bakers around the world have rushed forward to rescue breads good reputation. They say no to mass production in favor of baking flavorful loaves the old-fashioned way. British baker Mark Newman is a good example. His loaves take up to 18 hours from start to finish. “In terms of nutrition and eating satisfaction, a handmade loaf of real bread and mass-produced bread are completely different products.” he said. Artisanal bakers(手工面包师) hope to build on the popular enthusiasm to grow their industry. With a little luck and some fresh, whole grains bread might return to its traditional glory.32. From the traditional view, bread _.A. could not be served before a big mealB. could be mass producedC. was not used for religious purposes.D. symbolized some close relationships33. In the mass production of bread, whats the purpose of overusing yeast and additives?A. To blanch bread. B. To make bread more nutritious.C. To help bread keep longer. D. To speed the process of production.34. What is the structure of the passage? (=paragraph)A. B.C. D.35. What is the main idea that the writer wants to convey?A. Bread plays an important role throughout the world.B. Bread is becoming less consumed.C. Handmade bread enjoys great popularity nowadays.D. Bread has a long history as main food dominating tables. As its popularity grew, so too did its symbolic value. Christianity adopted bread as,D是同义替换。A项表述错误,could not不对。 Wherever wheat was grown, bread was sure to follow. 33,细节题,答案C:题干关键词yeast and additives定位于第六段,Extra yeast(酵母) and additives(添加剂) are added to the dough, to extend its shelf life此句可知添加酵母和添加剂的目的是延长面团寿命,C项正是它的同义改写。 Most students have had experienced or suffered from procrastination( 拖延症). Here are some tips to help you reduce procrastination.Set GoalsStudents often procrastinate because they think that they can put off the work for a while and enjoy their time at the moment. 36 , when the deadline becomes one day away and the essay has yet to be started. In order to stay on track, you should constantly set and update goals. It can be beneficial to mark all deadlines in a planner and think about how much time you need to meet them all. Update your plan for the upcoming two weeks so that you do not get overwhelmed, and continue to update as other assignments and events arise. Additionally, make a daily schedule in order to reach necessary goals before going to bed.Reward yourselfIt can become extremely difficult to work for hours straight in order to finish school work. In order to keep productivity, set breaks at the end of a period of time or once you finish a section ofyour work so that you can reward yourself with some deserved, scheduled, and controlled procrastination-like activities 37 . Breaks like these are proven to increase productivity and keep you focused, and they will make the process of studying much more bearable!Remind yourself of what youre doingSometimes you may begin to think that what you are working on has little to do with what you ultimately want to do. You may consider some work or a class pointless and not useful to your further studies. However, when these thoughts arise, remind yourself what the ultimate goal of your schooling is. Remind yourself why you wanted to go to school and take this program in the first place. 38 .Turn off the Internet 39 . If you do not need the Internet to do your work, turn it off so that you are not receiving notifications while completing your work, and you are not as tempted to search for sites. The same goes for your cell phone; you can take a break from being connected to the cyber world in order to do your school work. If you feel the need to check messages and websites often, set times when you will allow yourself to do so rather than constantly staying connected. 40 Being productive for all hours of every day does not work you do need breaks, and as a student you are entitled to have a lot of fun. So, in order to balance productivity and amusement, plan times to go out with friends or do something relaxing. But ideally, social and relaxation plans should be made for after a significant portion of work is complete. This way, while you are working, you can keep in mind that once you are finished your work you can go out and not worry about your assignments.A. Enjoy every minute in schoolB. Have something to look forward toC. The Internet has become an essential part of our daily lifeD. You may understand why you should focus on completing your workE. This thought tends to make things worse, thoughF. Some of the most common distractions are those found on the InternetG. You may have coffee with a friend, cook, or watch an episode of a television show36-40 EGDFB解析:36, E :本题考核的知识点是上下文过渡句。 Students often procrastinate because they think that此句中就出现了它的对应词think。 You may understand whyYou may understand是remind的同义替换。 此空所在段落标题是Turn off the Internet,空后面If you do not need the Internet前后都有共同的单词Internet,只有F项中原词复现,F项意思:最常见的一些分心原因都是网络造成的。 So, in order to balance productivity and amusement, plan times to go out with friends or do something relaxing. Next autumn, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in “ v” formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. _41_ each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird _42_ following.
