Each passage is followed by five questions For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Passage One Dont you just love computers? All the great games, and the Internet? How about for schoolfor papers and homework? They certainly make a lot of things faster and easier to do. As a result, they are becoming as common in our schools as desks and chairs. Have you ever wondered whether computers can actually help you to learn? Teachers have begun to wonder about that, although it seems a little late, since “information technology”IT is already in school around the country. The question of the effect of computers on learning has started a heated argument among parents, teachers and experts. Those people who support having computers in classrooms point to the excitement that students have in using new technology. They see the Internet as a source of information without limit that allows all schools to be the same. With the Internet, even students in small middle schools can reach the same amount of information as students in large universities. This gives all students the chance to learn how to obtain informationan important skill needed by everyone. Those who support technology argue that computers can become a “second teacher”, allowing each student to be more active in the classroom. This extra teacher may help students who dont do well under usual teaching methods. In addition, they argue that computer experience is needed for the future life and career of every student. For that reason alone, they feel that the use of computers in education is important. These points seem to show that computers make learning more interesting, but do they help us learn more? Many experts dont think so. Some believe that while computers are useful tools, they shouldnt be at the center of learning for students. According to these experts, students need to learn about new technologies for their future, but this doesnt mean that schools should make IT the center of every school subject. Some suggest that IT can even damage students learning. They believe that students may be distracted by computer games and the Internet. At one university 42 percent of the non-passing students said spending too much time on computers and the Internet had led to their failure. Those against computers in the classroom say that computers can certainly teach one thinghow to waste time. In addition, some people have begun criticizing how technology affects ones ability to think. One idea is that the use of computers may speed up our thinking, but only on the surface. Such fast thinking occurs when we quickly go from page to page and idea to idea. According to some, this type of surface thinking limits our ability to form deep thoughts, make arguments, and examine the deep meaning of things. Technology is certainly the answer to a lot of questions, but does it help us learn more? That is partly for you to decide, especially when your education may be affected by the result.31. Some of them will take part in a homestay program and live with an American family. However, others will take a different decision. They will live with friends from their own country. I believe that if a foreign student looks at both possibilities, he will decide to live with an American family. Even though there are one or two drawbacks to the homestay way, there are far more benefits. In making his decision about how to live in the United States, the foreign student is smart to consider one or two disadvantages to live with an American family. First of all, he must realize that he is going to feel homesick at first. Living in an American home with people of another language and culture may cause this feeling to increase. Also, the American family could become very protective of him. They may ask him where he is going, when he leaves home and when he will return. In spite of these two disadvantages, there is a stronger argument in favor of living with Americans.By living in an American home, the student has an opportunity to become familiar with American customs and culture. For instance, he will learn the importance of family closeness. He can see how the children. He will not feel like a stranger because the American family will help him adjust to a new life. In an American home, he can learn English fast. Family members can help him with his homework. When he speaks English, they can point out his errors. In this way, he can learn English naturally.Although there are some disadvantages to live with an American family, there are more benefits. If the foreign student at first realizes the value of learning about a new culture and improving his English at the same time, he will find studying there a very big experience.36. Do you think that black cats and the number 13 are bad luck? Every Friday the 13th three men break mirrors, and do other unlucky things. They want to show that they dont believe in such superstitions(迷信). They may be the only people in the world who arent superstitious. There are over one million superstitions, and most people believe at least one or two of them. Many people are superstitious about numbers. They think that there are lucky numbers and unlucky numbers. The number 13 is often considered unlucky. In some parts of the world, buildings have no 13th floor and streets have no houses with the number 13. In Japan, the number 4 is considered unlucky because in Japanese the word four is pronounced the same as the word death. Japanese never give gifts of four knives, or four of anything. What are the lucky numbers? Seven is a lucky number in many places, and 8 is considered lucky in Japan and China. Superstitions about numbers are so common that some people make a living giving advice about numbers. In 1937, when the Toyoda family of Japan wanted to form a car company, they asked a number expert if Toyoda would be a good name for the company. The expert said it would not be. He explained that Toyoda took ten strokes(笔划) of the pen to write, and 10 was not a lucky number. Toyota, however, took eight strokes to write, and eight was a very lucky number. The expert said Toyota was a better name for the company. The family took his advice. As a result, millions of people drive Toyotas and not Toyodas. In addition to superstitions about numbers, there are many other kinds of superstitions. There are superstitions about eating and sleeping. There are superstitions about animals and holidays. Because there are so many superstitions, it is not surprising that some of them are the opposite of each other. In Germany, it is good luck when the left eye twitches(抽搐) and bad luck when the right eye twitches. In Malaysia, it is exactly the opposite: a twitching right eye means good luck, and a twitching left eye means bad luck. Putting on clothes inside out by accident is good luck in Pakistan but bad luck in Costa Rica. In Chile, unmarried people wont take the last piece of food on the plate because it means they will never marry. In Thailand, unmarried people take the last piece because it means they will marry someone good-looking. Some superstitions have been with us for so long that they have become customs. In many parts of the world it is polite to say Health or God bless you when someone sneezes. People used to think that the soul could escape from the body during a sneeze. They said God bless you to protect people from losing their souls. Today we no longer believe that people who sneeze are in danger of losing their souls, but we say God bless you anyway. We say it not because we are superstitious, but because we are polite. Almost everyone is at least a little superstitious. One woman says that when she got married, her aunt gave her white bath towels. Never buy purple towels, her aunt said. If you use purple towels, your marriage will end. Does the woman believe that superstition? No, of course not, she says. Does she use purple towels? Well, no, she answers. Why take chances?41. Meeting someones glance with your eyes is usually a sign of interest, while looking away often shows a desire of disinterest. As we mentioned earlier, this is why salespersons on the street try to catch our eye. Once theyve managed to have contact with a street try to catch our eye. Once theyve managed to have contact with a glance, it becomes harder for the coming person to draw away. A friend explained how to use this rule to get a ride. “When Im trying to get a ride, Im always careful to look somewhere else as they pass, but if I can catch somebodys eye, hell almost always stop.” Most of us remember trying to avoid a question we usually became very interested in our textbooks, fingers, the clockanything but the teachers stare. Of course, the teacher always seemed to know the meaning of this behavior , and ended up calling on those of us who showed our worry.Another kind of message the eyes express is a double attitude. When someone glances toward us with the proper expression on the face, we get a clear message that the looker is interested in usso we have the expression “making eyes”. At the same time, when our long glances toward someone else are avoided by her, we can be sure that the other person isnt as interested in us as we are in her.The eyes express both control and being controlled. Weve all played the game of trying to stare down somebody, and in real life there are also times when down-staring eyes are a sign of giving in. In some church orders, for example, members in lower positions are expected to keep their eyes down when speaking to members in higher positions.46.
