Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches, which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier . You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal (愈合). Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk of death as far as possible. It is important to make the area, which has been pruned, smooth and clan, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the materials available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference (妨碍) from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.41Trees become unhealthy if the gardener . Ato help a wound to dry . Bto cover a rough surface . Cdamages some of the small side branches Dallows too many branches to grow in the middle 42Why is a special material painted on the tree ? ATo help a wound to dry . BTo cover a rough surface . CTo make a wound smooth . DTo prevent disease entering a wound .43A good gardener prunes a tree . Aseveral times throughout the year Bas quickly as possible Coccasionally when necessary Dregularly every winter 44What was the authors purpose when writing this passage ? ATo discuss different methods of pruning . BTo introduce some common knowledge of pruning . CTo explain how trees develop disease . DTo give practical instruction for pruning a tree . BSomeone can be overweight, underweight, or at an ideal weight. There is no one perfect weight for a kid to be, but there are ideal weight ranges for kids based on height and whether the person is a girl or a boy. Though healthy kids can weigh more or less, a good weight range is about 50 to 70 pounds (about 23 to 32 kilograms) for a kid whos 8 years old.But being overweight is more than a number on the scale. A doctor is a good person to make a judgment about a kids weight. The doctor can look at a kids ideal weight range while also taking the kids height into account. A taller kid naturally could weigh more than a shorter kid and not be overweight. Perhaps the best way to determine if a kid is overweight is to use something called body mass index, or BMI.BMI uses a kids height and weight in a calculation that results in a number. That number can be marked on a chart(图表) that also considers the kids age and if the kid is a girl or boy. BMI can show how much body fat the person has, but its only an estimate(估计), because muscle weighs more than fat, its possible for a muscular person to have a high BMI, but that doesnt mean he or she is overweight. Likewise, its possible for someone to have a low or ideal BMI but still have too much body fat.45. The ideal weight of a eight-year-old girl may be _.A. 13 kilograms B. 25 kilogramsC. 20 kilograms D. 15 kilograms46. BMI perhaps is something to be used to decide _.A. if a kid is too fatB. if a kid is shortC. if a kid is tallD. if a kid is too young47. What can we learn from the passage?A. Only a few kids have perfect weight.B. A kid who have low BMI must be overweight.C. A taller kid is most likely to be overweight.D. A kid who has a high BMI may not be overweight.48. The underlined word “Likewise” in the last paragraph means _.A. To ones surprise B. In the same wayC. What is moreD. Sooner or laterCLong bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning, a middle, and an endwith commercials(商业广告) thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not. Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window. Buy Super Clean Toothpaste. Drink Good Wet Root Beer. Fill up with Pacific Gas. Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off,are you spared the unending cry of You Need It! Buy It Now!The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if youve traveled that way before. Usually some things have changednew houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and its fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so. If the driver is particularly reckless (鲁莽的) or daring, the ride can be as thrilling(惊心动魄的)as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the lefthand lane? After a while, of course, the excitement dies down. Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride. Food always makes bus rides more interesting. But youve got to be careful of what kind of food you eat. Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and theres a kind of expectation and excitement in that. The seat of course, has become harder as the hours have passed. By now youve sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrestseven with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.49. According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip?A.Buses on the road. B.Films on television.C.Advertisements on the billboards. D.Gas stations.50. What is the purpose of this passage?A.To give the writers opinion about long bus trips.B.To persuade you to take a long bus trip.C.To explain how bus trips and television shows differ.D.To describe the billboards along the road.51. Asakawas experience and her effort to read code printoutsB. Accessibility a serious issueC. IBMs first Home Page ReaderD. Asakawas Further research on directions by touchingE. Asakawas contribution to the blindF. Asakawas strong desire to help the sighted53. _ Asakawa, 45, has spent the past eight years making the Internet a friendly place for people who cant see. In 1997 her research group at IBM Japan put out one of the worlds first browsers specifically made to read aloud the contents of Web pages. And last July, her team released software that helps Web designers figure out how to make their home pages accessible to people with poor or no eyesight.54. _Accessibility is a serious issue. The Internet is becoming an increasingly important source of information and services. For people who are blind, the Internet lets them do things on their own for which they previously needed a lot of help, like going shopping.55. _At age 11, Asakawa accidentally hit her head into the side of a pool while swimming, damaging her optic (视觉的) nerves. Three years later, she was completely blind. At a vocational school for the blind, Asakawa learned to program in various computer languages. To read code printouts she used a device that translated the code into raised letters sensed with the fingers. It was a struggle, she recalls, “ But it was possible.”56. _In the mid-1990s, she began surfing the Internet, using a combination of software that read out what was on the screen. But there were problems: The system only read English. On-screen fill-out forms stumped the reader, and tables with vertical columns came out as gibberish(无意义的声音). Asakawa decided to develop software specifically designed to handle the coding used for Web pages. She inserted aural cues to help browsing, like using a mans voice for text and a womans for links. In 1997 she put out IBMs first Home Page Reader in Japanese, then in English followed by nine other languages.57. _Asakawa is now doing basic research on using the sense of touch to direct the attention of the blind, as colors do for the sighted. She hopes this kind of research will also be useful for people with normal vision. “ Sighted people dont use the sense of touch very much,” she laughs. “ What a waste!第二卷(共56分) 单词拼写(满分16分,每空1分)58.
