I was fifteen. He was kind, strong, fair, and very funny. When I was a young musician, he was my biggest fan. I played my violin for him when he visited, and he loved everything, but each time he had one request. “Could you play Amazing Grace?” he asked, full of hope and with a twinkle in his eye, because he knew my answer was always, “I dont know that one!” We went through this routine at every major holiday, and I always figured Id have time to learn it for him later.About the time I entered high school and started guitar, Grandpa got cancer. The last time I saw him alive was Thanksgiving weekend in 1985. My mom warned us that Grandpa didnt look the same anymore and that we should prepare ourselves. For a moment I didnt recognize him. He looked so small among all the white sheets. We had all gathered in Ohio for the holiday, and Im sure we all knew we were there to say good-bye. I can see now that Grandpa held on long enough to see us each one more time. I remember how we ate in the dining room and laughed and talked while Grandpa rested in his hospital bed. I wonder if it was sad for him to be alone with our voices and laughter. Knowing Grandpa, he was probably content. The next morning I found my moment alone with him. I pulled out my guitar, tuned to his appreciative gaze, and finally played for him “Amazing Grace.” I had worked on it for weeks, knowing it never mattered whether I actually played it well and choosing not to believe as I played that it was my last concert for my biggest fan. The cancer had stolen his smile, but I saw joy in his eyes. He held my hand afterward, and I knew I had done something important. I argued with people all through college about my music major. I was told by strangers that music wouldnt make me any money and it wasnt useful like being a doctor. But I know firsthand that with music I was able to give my grandpa something at a point when no one else could. 46. If you have a fear of failure, you might be uncomfortable setting goals. But goals help us decide where we want to go in life. Without goals, we have no sure destination. Many experts recommend visualization(形象化) as a powerful tool for goal setting. Imagining how life will be after youve reached your goal is a great motivator to keep you moving forward. However, visualization might produce the opposite results in people who have a fear of failure. In his article, researcher Thomas Langens showed that people who have a fear of failure were often left in a strong negative mood(消极情绪) after being asked to visualize goals and goal attainment. So, what can you do instead?Start by setting a few small goals. These should be goals that are slightly, but not overwhelmingly, challenging. Think of these goals as early wins that are designed to help improve your confidence. For example, if youve been too afraid to talk to the new department head (who has the power to give you the promotion you want), then make this your first goal: Plan to stop by her office during the next week to introduce yourself. Or, imagine that youve dreamed of returning to school to get your MBA(工商管理硕士), but youre convinced that youre not smart enough to be accepted into business school. Set a goal to talk with a school counselor or admissions officer to see whats required for admission.Try to make your goals tiny steps on the route to much bigger goals. Dont focus on the end picture: getting the promotion, or graduating with an MBA. Just focus on the next step: introducing yourself to the department head, and talking to an admissions officer. Thats it.Taking one small step at a time will help build your confidence, keep you moving forward, and prevent you from getting overwhelmed with visions of your final goal. 51. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about _.A. the fear of failure B. the difficulty in setting goals C. the reasons for failure D. the importance of setting goals52. The opinion of Thomas Langens is used to _.A. tell the results of setting goals B. prove the limitations of visualizationC. draw the readers attention to the topic D. stress the importance of visualization53. The fourth paragraph is developed mainly by _.A. analyzing causes B. making comparisons C. following the order of space D. giving examples54. When setting goals, you should _.A. concentrate on your final goals B. talk with your department headC. begin with some small goals D. have confidence in your success55. What is the main theme of the passage?A. Skills to set your goals. B. Ways to overcome your fear of failure. C. Having a goal is vital to success. D. Visualization is a powerful tool for goal setting.CMy friend Kathy and I were going to Colorado Springs for holiday. The only problem was, I didnt have any luggage to pack my belongings in.My friend Debbie offered to lend mea suitcase that belonged to her father, who had passed away long ago. “I dont know if youll want to use it,” she said so gently, “its veryold, worn out, and such an ugly yellow color.” I was so touched by her offer to lend something that belonged to herfather, but I was also concerned about the possibility of it being damagedor lost. She insisted that I take it. So with the suitcase safely in hand, Iboarded the train with Kathy. We spent two days and one night on the train, sleeping in ourseats. As we slept, we were awakened at times, by the noises of the train pullingin and out of the stations. The next morning we eagerly awaited the announcement: Next stop, ColoradoSprings. She asked,“Did everything go well on the trip?” Somehow, I just couldnt resist telling her what had happened. She laughed heartily. When I recall the golden suitcase, Imreminded that like the suitcase, we can see ourselves as too old, useless, worn out, and of little value. DA deal has been signed to turn by-products from a Scottish distillery(酿酒厂) into fuel for cars. In what is declared to be a world first, the Tullibardine distillery in Perthshire has linked up with a spin-out company from Napier University in Edinburgh. They plan to use bacteria to feed on the leftovers from the whisky(威士忌酒) making process. This will produce butanol which can be used to fuel vehicles.More than 90% of the stuff that comes out of a whisky distillery is not whisky. It is leftovers like draff and pot ales(酒糟) - both produced in the early stages of the process. They are high in sugar and are currently used for things like fertiliser and cattle feed. Napier Universitys Biofuel Research Centre (BfRC) has already shown that the right bacteria can feed on those by-products to produce butanol - a direct replacement for vehicle fuel. Now the spin-out company, Celtic Renewables, and independent whisky producer Tullibardine have signed an agreement. Together they will apply the process to thousands of tonnes of the distillerys leftovers. Professor Martin Tangney, founder of Celtic Renewables, said: Our partnership with Tullibardine is an important step in the development of a business which combines two important Scottish industries - whisky and renewables. This project shows that creative use of existing technologies can utilise resources on our doorstep to benefit both the environment and the economy.Douglas Ross, managing director of Tullibardine, which spends 250,000 disposing of its by-products every year, said: We are delighted to be partnering Celtic Renewables in this creative business, the obvious benefits of which are environmental. It takes a cost to us and turns it into something that has social as well as commercial value. The project is being supported by a grant(拨款) from the Scottish governments Zero Waste Scotland initiative.
