Many other traditional schools, Hyde School sees itself as preparing children for life by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles including the values of truth, Unlike courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern. Academic success will then naturally follow. Joseph Guald, the founder of Hyde school, makes great efforts to have the Character First idea accepted by public schools. The school requires every student to have a unique potential based on character, conscience and hard work; success is measured by progress or development, and students take responsibility for each other. Parents are also required to be committed to the schools ideas and participate in the activities. With some setbacks at the beginning and during the process, its teachers are optimistic that Hydes program would work well in public schools. The students conduct faculty evaluations. And teachers begin to focus on a more fruitful relationship with every student. Examples prove these principles to be beneficial to the teachers as well as successful with the students. Unit 4To celebrate US independence and the France-America alliance in the mid-1870s, French artist Bartholdi designed the Statue of Liberty when he loved a woman his mother could not approve of. The statues arm was said to be modeled after his wife and the face after his mother to represent beauty, suffering and strength.Barbie, named after Barbara, was designed after a German doll Mattel refashioned into a decent, all-American version before it became the universally recognized Doll Queen. In 1930, inspirited by the Gothic window of an old farm house, Grant Wood created American Gothic, an often-copied interpretation of the solemn pride of American farmers, modeled after his dentist and his sister. The Buffalo Nickel with three Indians on one side and a buffalo on the other, designed by Fraser and produced from 1913 to 1938 honored the destruction of the buffalo herds and the American Indians.Uncle Sam was of several versions, evolved from earlier cartoon characters, and later became the symbol of America (a tall man with white hair and a small white beard on his chin, a dark blue coat and a starry tall hat). 1. My success strategies(我的成功策略)Everybody is eager to be a successful person in his life. But not all people can always succeed. As for me, in order to accomplish my goal for success, I have several ways. One of them, is that I will work very hard and focus. and I will complete very fast. This strategy works very well. The other, is that I can get help from others. Others may know information what I dont know, and it will be easier to success .The third, is that I will go on the computer and find out the best way to do each task swiftly and quickly. These are my success strategies 2. A national symbol of China(中国国家象征)Alongside the Terracotta Army, the LiRiver, chinas pandas, I think the Great wall is a symbol of china, in my heart. As we all known the most famous national symbol of China for the foreigners is undoubtedly the Great Wall. It is said that the Great Wall is the only man-made building visible from outer space. The Great Wall becomes a tour site which becomes a must for those visitors abroad. Although some segments of Great Wall is made full use of and bring a lot of fortune to the local government like Beijing, most part of the wall is still in the wild without being noticed. So its important for us to protect it when taking advantage of it. 3. What I want to do before I die(在我死之前想做的事)Before I die,I what alldont want to do,because I do notknow what time Iwill die.Usuallydo wellthen there will be noregret.Unit 5I have never seen Mrs. Clark before, but I know that she will die tonight, my night shift. The only light from medical equipment is flashing; the smell of decay hits my nose and I have a sour, vinegar taste in my mouth. Her skeleton body lies motionless, the sunken chest rising and falling with uneven breaths. I reach for her ice-cold fingers; feel for the faint pulse, bend close only to hear her weak voice “Water”, and use a straw to drop moisture into her mouth. She is too weak to talk and I go about providing for her needs. Noticing her graceful fingers, I wonder if she has any family. She reads my mind and tells me she has sent her family home; with last strength she asks me to stay, her long fingers curling easily around my hand, her yellow eyes expressing “thank you”. Her shallow breaths stop and I burst out crying quietly. Two days later, I got to know from the newspaper that she was a mother of seven, an active churchgoer, a volunteer leader, a concert piano player and teacher. What graceful hands! Unit 6Human beings suffer a lot from natural disasters and they know the pains and destruction it brings to them. However, it is hard to know when they are going to happen and how bad they will be. So the essay focuses on one major disasterearthquake. In the text How to Prepare for Earthquake, the author shares some valuable ideas to prevent the loss of lives and the great destruction of properties caused by earthquake despite the difficulty of forecast. This essay is a good illustration of earthquake prediction, prevention and preparation, which can promulgate relevant knowledge to people and arouse their close attention.Although the scientists still cannot predict earthquake up to now, everyone should have some basic and useful information to combat earthquake, such as improving building structures, being personally prepared and making family emergency plan. In the long run, individuals, communities and governments in different levels should work together to survive in an earthquake. 4. Get ready for an earthquakeIf you are indoors, duck or drop down to the floor. Take cover under a table. Hold on to it and be prepared to move with it. Hold the position until the ground stops shaking and it is safe to move. Stay clear of windows, woodstoves, and heavy furniture or appliances that may fall over. If you are in a crowded area, take cover where you are. Stay calm and encourage others to do likewise. If you are outside, get into the open, away from buildings and power lines. If you are driving, stop if it is safe, but stay inside your car.
