In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier than their gasolinepowered cousins.People in California love to talk about “zeroemissions (排放) vehicles”, but people in California seem to be_clueless_about where electricity comes from. Power plants most all use fire to make it. Apart from the few people who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by somethingusually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants. There are a few wind farms and geothermal (地热) plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something. In other words, those “zeroemissions” cars are likely coalburning cars. Because the coal is burned somewhere else, it looks clean. It is not true. Its as if the California Greens are covering their eyes“If I cant see it,its not happening.” Gasoline is an incredibly efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heatat the generator, through the transmission lines, etc.A gallon of gas may drive your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas wont get you nearly as far, so electric cars burn more fuel than gasolinepowered ones. If our electricity came mostly from wind or geothermal ,or solar, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we dont use much of those energy sources. In addition, electric cars batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When its a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.1Whats the main idea of the passage?AElectric cars arent actually clean.BElectric cars are zeroemissions vehicles.CZeroemissions vehicles are popular.DGasolinepowered cars are more efficient.2Which of the following words can replace “be clueless about” in Paragraph 2?Abe familiar withBbe curious aboutCfail to understand Dshow their interest in3In the authors opinion, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more _.Aenvironmentally friendlyBexpensiveCefficientDharmful4It can be inferred from the passage that _.Aelectric cars batteries are poisonous for a long timeBnow electric cars are used more than their gasolinepowered cousinsCzeroemissions vehicles should be chosen to protect our environmentDelectric cars are not clean in that we get electricity mainly by burning something答案与解析:很多人都认为电动汽车是非常环保的,加州人甚至普遍认为电动汽车是“零排放汽车”。 DBAs we know, its the beginning of the end for TV. Apple has released Apple TV, a tiny white box that connects the shows and movies youve downloaded from the computer, and wirelessly (无线的) sends them to your TV screen. No longer will you have to pay a monthly fee to your cable (有线的) company to watch your favourite show. Apples iTunes has made it possible to download a TV show for about $2,keep it stored on your computer and watch it whenever you want. Its a blow to the cable networks, which offer services that are often expensive and make hundreds of channels and thousands of shows nothing to watch.American networks have gone one step further, allowing audiences to watch their shows for free online. If the cable companies dont keep up with technology, well soon be giving them up.“This is the biggest kind of entertainment in history,” says Colin Dixon, “I dont think that traditional broadcastscable and satelliteare going away tomorrow, but they must change to keep market share.”The Internet changes businesses at an unbelievable speed. Now its happening with video. Canadians are being kept behind the times. Some Canadian channels are starting to follow American companies. Global offered Survivor: Cook Islands online, and CTV is doing the same for Degrassi: The Next Generation. And cable companies say that video on demand and personal video recording technology can compete with the Net.“You watch when you want it,” says Michael Lee, adding that the Net doesnt give viewers the opportunity to just sit on the couch and flip (翻阅) through channels. However, it takes time.“Up until this year even the US sites didnt offer a lot of online content. Weve seen an explosion of it this fall,” she says.5According to the text,Apple TV _.Amarks the end of TVBmakes it more convenient for its users to watch TVCmakes it possible to download movies from computersDmakes it possible to send movies to TV by wire6The appearance of Apples iTunes means _.Agood news for the cable companiesBthe cable companies can earn a lot moreCthe serious situation for cable companiesDthe rapid development of technology7According to Colin Dixons words, which of the following agrees with his idea?ACable companies need to turn to technology for help.BCable and satellite will disappear at last.CTheres no need for cable companies to change.DTraditional broadcasts are the only entertainment now.8According to the text, what does the underlined word “it” refer to?AThe cable company.BThe online content.CViewers opportunity.DThe change of cable networks. Last week, I took a my foreign teacher, Mr Green, to the Great Wall.
