While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced(影响)us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.36. Why was the bike so important to the couple?A. The mans job was bike racing. B. It was their only possession.C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed. D. They used it for work and daily life.37. We can infer from the text that _.A. the couple worked 60 hours a week. B. people were busy before ChristmasC. the stranger brought over the bike D. life was hard for the young family.38. How did people get to know the couples problem?A. From radio broadcasts. B. From a newspaper.C. From TV news. D. From a stranger.39. What do the couple learn from their experience?A. Strangers are usually of little help. B. One should take care of their bike.C. News reports make people famous. D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.BWhen someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible - and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite (胃口) and better sleep patterns. People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness, says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. So it can help save on the wear and tear on .our system and allow people to feel more energetic. So when someone has hurt you, calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing, says Dr. Luskin. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just dont see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person s perspective 视角). You may realize that he or she-was acting out of ignorance (无知) , fear - even love. To gain perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person s point of view.40. The text is mainly written to explain _.A. how to keep yourself from being hurtB. how to stay mentally healthyC. how and when to remain calmD. why and how to pardon others 41. According to the writer, what is the right way to calm down after being hurt?A. Try to figure out why you get hurt.B. Write a letter to the person who hurt you.C. Persuade yourself to accept what others have done to you.D. Think about pleasant things and forget about the hurt.42. Dr. Luskin advises us not to wait for an apology after being hurt because _.A. we are not patient enough B. we d feel worse accepting others apology C. people seldom want to apologize D. people don t mean it when they apologizeCMargaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building. She trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have like to go back to it, but the shifts(工作班次) are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 a.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just 90, before tax and insurance. “Its better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work unsocial hours should get a bit extra.”The hours shes chosen to work meant that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesnt think that puts any pressure on their relationship. Her work isnt physically very hard, but its not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps theyd be a bit more careful.”The fact that shes working all night doesnt worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since Ive got to be here, I try to enjoy myself and I usually do, because of the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think youre a cleaner because you dont know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what Id been doing, but I dont think that way any more. I dont dislike the work though I cant say Im mad about it.”43. Margaret quit her job as a nurse because _.A. she wanted to earn more money to support her familyB. she had suffered a lot of mental pressureC. she needed the right time to look after her childrenD. she felt tired of taking care of patients44. Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because _.A. they never clean their offices B. they look down upon cleanersC. they never do their work carefully D. they always make a mess in their offices45. When at work, Margaret feels _.A. light hearted because of her fellow workers B. happy because the building is fully litC. tired because of the heavy workload D. bored because time passed slowly46. The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margarets parents would _.A. help care for her children B. regret what they had saidC. show sympathy for her D. feel disappointed in herDThe only constant is change. If theres one thing we can count on in our life it is that whatever is going on now will change. We live in an ever-changing universe. Everything in our world, including our very bodies is changing. The cells in our body are totally replaced every seven years. The seasons change as do governments, businesses, cultures, the sun, moon, stars, and, of course, us. Unfortunately, it is our nature to resist change of any kind. I dont know about you, but I find this a bit strange. We are trying to resist change in an ever-changing universe. Unsuccessfully, I might add. The fear of change and fear of the unknown is so strong in some people that they will remain in abusive relationships, unhealthy environments, and many other self-destructive situations, rather than face the unknown. If you want to have a successful, happy and productive life, you must learn to accept, even welcome or embrace change. I know it can be difficult. We become comfortable with the present situation, going along on our path feeling fine and all of a sudden, wham! Something happens to upset our apple cart. It can be your vacation or a broken date. Whatever the situation change or circumstance we must learn to handle it or we may be troubled by it. The best way I know of to deal with challenging situations is to ask better questions. Ask questions like whats good about this? Or, how can I best cope with this situation? Or, how can I make the best of this? I remember once being fired from my job at a TV production company. When the boss told me I was no longer needed, I thanked him. You should have seen the look on his face. He expected me to be angry and was shocked at my response. I viewed my losing the as the opportunity I was waiting for. He gave me the push I needed to start my own business and Ive never looked back. Of course, it may be wise to seek outside help, especially in serious situations. Dont be afraid to reach out for help. Our society has a support system for almost any challenge you may be facing. If all else fails, in a changing situation, remember the wisdom of the passage above.47. What is the text mainly about? A. The ever-changing universe B. Learning to embrace change C. The fear of change D. The best way to deal with changing situations48. According to the text, people tend to resist change of any kind because _. A. it is peoples nature to resist any kind of change B. they dont want to have a successful, happy and productive life C. something happens to upset our apple cart D. they are afraid to reach out for help49. We can infer from the text that _. A. it can be difficult for people to accept change B. change can be something as serious as the loss of a loved one or a job or home C. change may be a minor upset like rain on your vacation or a broken date D. different people have different attitudes towards change50. By telling his own experience, the author tries to show _. A. his wisdom B. how to seek outside help C how to deal with challenging situations D. the ways to ask better questions第二节 (共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。When talking to shy people, it is important to follow certain guidelines so as not to discourage them while trying to have them open up to you.Limit questions. It may seem obvious, but its amazing how many people dont seem to understand that shy people dont want to talk to you. Theyd rather listen to you. By all means ask questions and show that you are actually interested in what they have to say. 51 Doing this makes you sound like an interrogator(询问者), not a friend.Be patient. It may take some time to get the full answer, so dont be afraid of a little silence. Prompting(催促), such as “go on”, will not help and will likely make them nervous. 52 Give them enough time to do so.Listen carefully to their answers and give positive feedback(反馈意见). Be sure to give sincere feedback between questions, as well as communicate your thoughts and ideas on the subject.53 Avoid making jokes at the expense of shy people, unless your are sure they will enjoy it. Remember it is not always the best policy to compliment them. Some shy people feel really awkward when complemented. Avoid asking them why they are shy. 54 Respect their choice when they choose to be quiet in a group conversation.55 If you have discovered an activity that they enjoy, or have one in mind that you think they would appreciate, ask them if they would be interested in meeting with you later for that activity. It may be that the s
