OK, thats not true. But competitors from around the world gathered on Thursday for the annual competition to crown the worlds biggest liar. Each participant is given up to five minutes to make up the best fib in the contest, which was founded in honor of 19th-century Bridge Inn landlord Will Ritson, who was reportedly legendary for his lies. Competitors gather at the Bridge Inn every year for the competition, a small pub in northwestern England. Anyone can take part in the competition. Well, almost anyway; the reporters note that lawyers and politicians are banned, citing “an unfair advantage” in the proceedings. A study published this past July in the journal Evolution & Human Behavior found that nearly all lies are detectable through visible facial muscle reactions in the person telling a lie. “Thus, while interpersonal deception often is highly successful, signs of hidden emotional states are communicated clearly to the informed observer, ” the study concluded. A bishop of Carlisle reportedly holds what may be the greatest lie of all time in the competition, simply stating, “I have never told a lie in my life. ”In 2003, Abrie Krueger of South Africa became the first non-Brit to win the competition. Ironically, Krueger was accused by some of cheating. In 2006, comedian Sue Perkins became the first female to win the competition, telling a tale about people riding camels to work as a result of climate change. Last years winning entry came from Glen Boyland, who told a lie about competing in a snail-racing competition with Prince Charles. 56. Why does the author tell a lie at the beginning of the passage? The competition is held at the Bridge Inn every year in honor of Will Ritson. C. All the lies can be discovered through visible facial muscle reactions. D. Glen Boyland competed in a snail-racing competition with Prince Charles. 60. Whats the purpose of this text? A. To introduce a strange competition. B. To explain how to detect the liars. C. To discuss how to avoid telling lies. D. To invite people to take part in the competition. (B)The message has spread across Minnetonka, Minnesota area high schools, causing a debate over what is appropriate attire (着装) in schools. Minnetonka High School Principal Dave Adney sent a message to parents last week, asking them to talk to their daughters about whether its appropriate to wear yoga pants or other tight-fitting leggings with T-shirts. The combination, he said, can expose “more leg and backside” and can “be highly distracting (令人分心的) for other students”. By last Tuesday, hed already heard from more than 70 parents as well as other high schools, all in support of him. “It must have touched a nerve, ” he said. Adney wanted to make it clear that leggings arent banned. He just wants modesty (低调) to be taken into consideration. “Its not about trying to be the clothing police, its just a sensitivity issue. . . Hopefully with us being the first to speak up, it will create a lot of conversations. ”Adney said the phenomenon started about a month ago when about a half dozen female staff, school volunteers and female students complained about girls wearing tight leggings with shorter shirts. “In the past, girls wore the leggings with long shirts or jerseys (毛线衫), but the trend of wearing them now with shorter shirts leaves their backside closely defined (轮廓分明的), ” Adney said. “This new trend doesnt seem right, its troubling, ” he said, “Cover your butts (屁股) upIm just going to say it straight up. Were seeing too much. ” It certainly isnt the first time high schools and fashion trends have clashed. Principals say it comes up nearly every yearfor both boys and girls alike. This fall, Adney said the school had to tell boys off for wearing baseball hats which arent allowed. Last spring, boys were wearing muscle shirts that were too revealing. Don Johnson, executive director of the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals and a former principal, said schools handbooks outline that they are legally allowed to make restrictions on clothing. 61. According to the article, Dave Adney believed that _. A. school girls shouldnt wear tight-fitting leggingsB. school girls cause more trouble than boys when it comes to following dress codesC. dressing properly helps students focus on their academic workD. dialogue and conversation is the only way to make students dress appropriately62. Which of the following is a proper way of dressing according to the article? A. Baseball hats with jerseys. B. Yoga pants with long shirts. C. Muscle shirts with long pants. D. Tight leggings with T-shirts. 63. What is the main point of the article? A. To look at whether American high schools should be allowed to restrict what students wear. B. To explore new restrictions on dressing in Minnetonka high schools. C. To study how fashion trends fit into high school life. D. To look at what schools and parents do to prevent high school students from being distracted. (C) The saying, “Old habits die hard. ” has a lot of truth to it. This is because habits are deeply rooted in our brains so much that we do certain things almost automatically, such as taking the same route to school, or biting our nails. Doing some things without thinking means our brain is freed up to focus on other thingslike what to wear to school. But it turns out that our brain doesnt completely switch off, even when it comes to habits. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, have found the exact region in our brain that is in charge of kicking old habits and forming new ones. When they chose the right direction, they were given a reward-chocolate milk (for turning left) or sugar water (for turning right). In the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers trained rats to run a T-shaped maze (迷宫). As the rats approached the point in the maze where they had to decide which way to turn, they heard a tone telling them to go either right or left. Just like humans, who often keep old habits going even if they are no longer benefiting from them, the rats also continued running the maze correctly even when they were no longer given a reward. Once the rats had formed some habits, the scientists wanted to see if they could change them by disturbing a part of the brain called the infralimbic cortex (下边缘皮质). Using a new technique, they managed to turn off the activity of the infralimbic cortex for several seconds as the rats made decisions. Almost immediately, the rats dropped the habit of running in a certain direction according to the given tone. It shows that though some habits may be deeply rooted, the brains planning centers can shut them off. But the old habits didnt disappear completely. “This habit was never really forgotten, ” said Kyle Smith, a member of the study, “Its still lurking (潜伏) there somewhere. ” The findings could pave the way for new treatment to help people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (强迫症). It is also a blessing for those who have no self-control and find it hard to kick a bad habit on their own. 64. What does the author suggest in the first two paragraphs? A. We should build a daily routine as soon as possible. B. Keeping old habits gives our brain lots of rest. C. Habitual behaviors could give us time to think of other things. D. Our brain exercises no control over our habitual behaviors. 65. The author explains how our brain determines our habits by _. A. talking about research findingsB. setting down general rulesC. making a comparisonD. using numbers66. According to the author, disturbing the infralimbic cortex of rats brain could _. A. make them lose the sense of directionB. lower their interest in chocolate milk or sugar waterC. keep them running in certain directionsD. stop them from reacting to the tones when they have to take a turn67. We can infer from the article that _. A. some old habits of ours could disappear completelyB. shutting down the function of infralimbic cortex could cure obsessive-compulsive disorderC. it is possible for us to kick old habits and form new onesD. the research is helpful to
