(Reading Period)T: TeacherSs: Students1. Teaching ideology The New English Curriculum is designed to develop students overall quality, which pays more attention to students comprehensive development of language skills, knowledge, strategies, affects and cultural awareness. The aims focus on senior high school students interests, abilities and positive attitude towards learning English. So much emphasis should be laid on task-based language teaching, communicative language teaching and cooperative language learning. 2. Teaching material & teaching condition2.1 Teaching material:The material of this class is the using language part taken from Unit6 When was it invented? The topic of this unit centers on the inventions in the past.The reading period includes three parts: pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. While-reading we can divied it into two parts: fast-reading and careful reading. During the reading period, we need to train students skimming, scanning and comprehensive skills.Reading is for writing. So in this period, the teaching activities will focus not only on reading skills but also on reading structure. Then the students can copy the similar structure to write. The practice of reading and writing is important for students to use the vocabulary and structures they have learned. It is also a best way to test if students have mastered what they have learned.2.2 Teaching condition:The learners of this class are from Yuhuan Bilingual School, a Junior Two school. Therefore, my students have a good foundation of English, as well as a good ability of listening and speaking. They are also interested in group work, so they will be easily activated through some discussion and group work. Whats more, the topic “Basketball” is quite appealing to them, especial for the boys.3. Teaching focuses & anticipated difficulties3.1 Teaching focuses(1) Thorough understanding about basketball history and the popularity of basketball.(2) Develop Ss reading and writing ability.(3) Let Ss learn how to use the expressions of direction and position.(4) Get Ss to learn to write a short report about their most impressive inventions.Solutions: Communicative teaching method; task-based teaching method 3.2 Anticipated difficulties(1) Discussing and airing their views freely in the class (2) Writing with a short passage about the impressive invention Solutions: Task-based teaching method; autonomous and cooperative learning method4. Teaching objectivesLanguage knowledgeLearning strategiesLanguage skillsAffectsCulture awareness4.1 Language knowledge At the end of this class, the Ss will be able to:(1) Pronounce and understand some new words and phrases, such as hero, Canadian, popularity, divideinto, look up to, popularity, and etc.(2) Correctly use the active voice and passive voice(3) Get a general idea about the reading passage and reading material.(4) Write an invention which impressed them most (including history, function, inventor, and so on)4.2 Language skillsAt the end of this class, the Ss will be able to:(1) Use the expressions of active voice and passive voice(2) Express their views of inventions history and development freely and fluently through discussion or in other various real communicative situations.(3) Write an invention which impressed them most.4.3 AffectsAt the end of this class, the Ss will be able to:(1) Stimulate students interest in learning about the inventions and their histories throughout the world.(2) Realize that inventions are grateful, and Ss should be more creative.4.4 Cultural awarenessAt the end of this class, the Ss will be able to:(1) Basketball is just one of the inventions, there are a lot of grateful inventions in our life which make our life easier and convenient.(2) Realize that western people are more creative than Chinese people, Ss should learn from them to be more creative.4.5 Learning Strategies(1) Cognitive strategy: Ss will be able to use their memory and thinking to help their English learning.(2) Control strategy: Ss will be able to do self and peer assessment to adjust their learning methods.(3) Communicative strategy: Ss will be able to learn more communicative skills and express their views freely and fluently, and cultivate their cooperative learning through some group works.5. Teaching methodsSituational teaching method: various situations will be set to make English learning more vivid and lifelike. Take-based teaching method; autonomous and cooperative learning method: Ss will learn cooperatively and autonomously with various tasks given by T. “Tell me, Ill forget; show me, Ill remember; involve me, Ill understand.” So in this using language part, the following teaching methods are set accordinglyCommunicative teaching method: Ss will be stimulated to express their views in various real communicative situations freely and fluently.BlackboardPPT documentA real basketball & Multi-media devices6. Teaching proceduresStep 1: Free talk (5mins)T: (T takes out a basketball) What is it?Ss: Its a basketball.Purpose: Arouse students interest in the topic and lead in.T: What do you know about it?S1: Its round.S2: Its interesting.S3: T: Whats your favorite basketball star?S1: Yao Ming.S2: Kobe. T: Kobe is my favorite star, too. We can call him hero. So Yao Ming and Kobe are _.Ss: Heroes.T: (Write “heroheroes” on the blackboard.) Aim: To arouse Sss interests to learn about the passage.Step 2. Fast reading (5mins)T: Ok, today we are going to learn a passage about basketball. Please open your book and turn to page 46. Please read the passage quickly and tell me how many paragraphs are there in this passage?Ss: Three.T: Find the topic sentence of each paragraph. (After 1 minute, and tell Ss the topic sentence usually comes in the first sentence or the last sentence of each paragraph) Purpose: Give one minute is just the time to read, and just the time to give the instruction.T: (check the answer of para.) The topic sentence of para.2 S1: The first sentence.S2: The second sentence. T: Any different ideas? If you really cant find the topic sentence, you can use your own words.
