Enjoy ReadingWanchun From Xingfulu Middle SchoolMany years ago, my dad had a terminal(晚期的,不治的) heart condition. He was unable to work at a steady job. He would be fine for quite a while, but would then suddenly fall ill and have to be admitted to the hospital. He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local childrens hospital . My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them. Sometimes, he would lose one of the kids. In certain instances(情况,场合),he would tell the sad parents of these children that he would soon be with their children in heaven and that he would take care of them there. He would also ask the parents if there was a message they would like to send with him for their children. One of his kids was a girl who had a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪) her from the neck down. It was very sad for a girl around eight or nine years old. She couldnt do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didnt use his hands at all. Only his head would move. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything if you set your mind to.” Eventually(最终), she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the childrens hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed, but this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad. She gave my dad a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “ Thank you for helping me walk.” My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes that love is more powerful than doctors, and my dad who died just a few months after the little girl gave him the picture, loved every single child in that hospital. How wrong we were! Years of Sunday morning bus trips through the city with the same group of “nameless” people have changed our thinking. Before the bus started, we all joined in a conversation: wheres the silent woman who sits up front and never responds to our cheery greetings? Here she comes. Her worn clothing suggests she doesnt have much money to spare, but she always takes an extra cup of coffee for the driver. We get smiles from a Mexican couple as they get on the bus hand in hand. When they get off, theyre still holding hands. The woman was pregnant(怀孕) late last year, and one day her change of shape confirmed that shed delivered the child. We even felt a little pride at the thought of our extended family . For many months, we wondered if wed be able to establish that same friendship with the silent woman at the front of the bus. Then , one evening, we went to a fish restaurant. We were shown to a table alongside someone sitting alone. It was the woman from the bus. We greeted her with the friendly way wed shown all year, but this time her face softened, then a shy smile. When she spoke, the words escaped awkwardly from her lips. All at once we realized why she hadnt spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her. Over dinner, we learned the story of a single mother with a disabled son who was receiving special care away from home. She missed him very much, she explained.“I love him and he loves me, even though he doesnt express it very well,” she said in a low voice. “Lots of us have that problem, dont we? We dont say what we want to say, what we should be saying. And thats not good enough. ” The candles flared on our tables. Our fish had never tasted better.
