The woman sitting across from me looked familiar, with features similar to those I look at in the mirror every day, but we hadnt been formally introduced before. We last met 41 years ago, when she gave me up for adoption. Although I had been searching for my mother for more than nine years, with the help of two law firms, I had done so only in a half-hearted manner, easily disappointed. And, although my adoptive parents had been lovely, they were not enthusiastic about my search. In fact, they seemed hurt by my interest. After a while, she pulled out a set of family photographs and a card, which she handed to me. She had received it 41 years and three months previously. “Would you like it?” she asked. “No,” I said. It was a note from the parents who raised me, which had accompanied a vase. She had also kept the vase. It was broken at some point in 1975, and she kept all the pieces. Had something terrible happened to me in 1975? No, I ensured it. I suggested that she invite her husband, my father, to join us. He was there within 10 minutes.I was raised by a couple who were in their late thirties when I came along, so this couple, barely past 60, seemed young to me.We sat for another hour. I knew from them that they had lived at the same address in London for 30 years. As a teenager, I had lived a five-minute walk from their house. We used the same tube (地铁) stop in the 1980s. We must have walked past each others houses a hundred times. 36. Who was the woman drinking tea with the author in the tearoom? A. A social worker from the law firm. B. The authors adoptive mother. C. The authors sister. D. The authors birth mother.37. How did the author feel when she was searching for her birth parents? A. Enthusiastic. B. Half-hearted. C. Annoyed. D. Delighted.38. How old were the authors adoptive parents when she wrote the article? A. 41 years old. B. About 60 years old. C. About 70 years old. D. About 80 years old.39. We can infer from the passage that the author_. A. was badly treated by her adoptive parents B. is now living in London with her adoptive parents C. broke the vase given by her birth mother D. was kind of superstitious (迷信的)BLast week two reports spotlighted a sad trend in parenting: the demise (终止) of the picture books. In the rush to early reading, it seems parents tend to choose to read chapter books instead of picture books for their children. This is a big mistake. Find out why.In the report from Paris, a glorious retrospective (回顾展) of Monets works reminds us how artistic expression gives form to our thinking. The rush to read chapter books should not take artistic pleasure away from children and might make children lose one of mankinds deepest and most profound modes of thinking (思维方式) and feeling. Early reading is all about feelings, and that includes the feelings produced through picture-book reading. As an early reading supporter, Im strongly against any retreat from picture books: Do buy picture books and choose chapter books with pictures!I was shocked to read Julie Bosmans report in The New York Times, “Picture Books, Long a Staple, Lose Out in the Rush to Read”. Is it true that parents are pressuring their children “to leave the picture books behind and move on to chapter books” all for the sake of strict standardized testing? What has happened to imagining and feeling? If you think taking picture books away from children is a good idea, just read a wonderful review from the same paper in the same week by Michael Kimmelman. It is “Paris Rediscovers Monets Magic at Grand Palais”.Kimmelman describes the show of over 160 of Monets paintings as “the biggest exhibition in Europe this fall”, and goes on to explain why: Pictures dont just “show sun, rain and snow, but states of mind as well”. The same can be said of picture books they show a state of mind in children that words alone cant achieve.More from Kimmelman: “(Monet) seizes on (抓住) the way that memory, associated with a place or an image, experienced at a certain time and in a certain mood. Monet was really painting mental states, states of reflection.” What a great comment on the power of the picture! Its true; a picture is sometimes worth a thousand words! 40. We can learn from the passage that the author_.A. rediscovers Monets magic at Grand Palais B. cares much about childrens early readingC. enjoys reading picture and chapter books D. has watched the show of Monets paintings41. What is the authors attitude towards the new trend in parenting? A. Disapproving. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Neutral.42. The underlined word “retreat” in Paragraph 2 probably means “_”. Its wrong to choose chapter books rather than picture books for childrens early reading. B. For children, reading picture books is of great pleasure and helps develop their thinking. C. It is acceptable for parents to ask children to read chapter books because of testing. D. Picture books can show children the state of mind much better than chapter books.CYouve been abroad. A. show that Chinese restaurants are very popular abroad B. state that Chinese restaurants are worth visiting C. call on people to taste various dishes in the US D. introduce some good Chinese restaurants in the USDJoan, the town supervisor (监督人) of the towns morals recently accused George, a local man, of having a drinking problem because she had noticed his pickup truck was outside the towns only bar one morning. After all, she reasoned, it was a logical assumption (假设). George stared at her for a moment and said nothing. Later that evening, he parked his pickup truck in front of her house and left it there all night. Why is it that so many of our logical assumptions are just simply wrong? And why do we want to act as if they must be true?In an age long before the Internet, a young American at a banquet (宴会) found himself seated next to V. K. Wellington Koo, a famous Chinese diplomat (外交官). Completely being at a loss what to say to someone from such a different culture, the young man turned and asked, “Likee soupee?” After all, he assumed, “Dont all Chinese speak in broken English?” Mr. Koo smiled and nodded. Later when called upon to speak, Wellington Koo delivered a great talk in fluent English. He sat down while the applause (掌声) was still continuing, and whispered to the young man, “Likee speechee?”I myself also regularly assume things and act as if they must be true. Do you know one of the reasons why red roses are so popular? Men assume that all women prefer red roses. They keep buying them and make them popular. And when asked about the partners favorite color of roses, a man usually says its red. But what do women say? When a woman is asked what her favorite color of roses is, she is more likely to answer that she prefers yellow, white, black, peach or purple. And when she is asked what kind of flowers she would prefer to receive from that special person, the answer is generally not roses at all. Try daisies, tulips or gardenias. The age-old assumption that most women like red roses best is simply not true. Now Im learning to ask about those things I always think are “absolutely true”. In the past, when my wife was silent, I always assumed that she was angry with me. But now Im learning to ask. And Im discovering that her silence sometimes actually comes from the fact that she is worried about something that is not related to me at all.We all make some assumptions. They are too often wrong and can easily get us into trouble. So here is what Ive learned: when in doubt, check it out. And if Im not in doubt, I still check it out. Am I sure I know what she likes? I check it out. Do I really know what her silence is all about? I check it out. Is it logical? I still check it out. We often think we know. But what we know may not be so. So its best to check it out. This may sound simplistic, but I am always amazed how often we are in trouble over those things we assume to be true. Yet nobody has checked them out. And I also know that when I check my assumptions out, I can expect to be surprised. 47. V. K. Wellington Koos experience is mentioned in the passage to show_. A. the young man made the wrong assumption B. the young man should not be criticized in words C. V. K. Wellington Koo was not good at speaking English D. V. K. Wellington Koo was humorous when he was in a difficult situation48. What can we infer from the fact that men often buy red roses? A. Women have a preference for red roses. B. Men and women s
