why or why not? now, listen to the tape again and write down two things you would like about utopia and two things you would hate. fill in the form in exercise 4. play the cassette again for students to listen for things they would like and things they would hate. then students exchange ideas in pairs and discuss whether they would like to live in mores utopia and give reasons for and against living there. a sample of discussion: s1: i would like to live in mores utopia. then i can do what i want to do if i dont go against the law. i can play freely. i neednt get up early if i dont want to. i neednt worry about what to eat tomorrow, what to wear tomorrow and so on.s2: i dont like it, because i like fashion and changes.s3: i dont like it, either. i think men and women are equal. husband shouldnt have authority over their wives. and women have the equal right to be heads of the household. t: ok, all of you did a good job. so much for the discussion.step iii listening strategies: understanding cultural referencesthe listening strategies will help students build listening skills and get thoroughly prepared. before listening to the conversation, ask students to read and discuss listening strategies on page 36. from the listening strategies, students will learn how to deal with cultural references.t: look at the things in exercise 6. what do they refer to? can you guess? ss: t: actually, these things all have cultural references that we may not be familiar with. then how to know their references? here is a strategy for you listening strategies. read it please. then let students listen to the conversation in exercise 6 and guess the cultural references of the things. check the answers. ask students to report back their guesses to the class and say what clues in the context helped them guess the cultural references of the words.step iv function file deal with exercise 7give students time to read the function file and guess the missing words. draw their attention to the two sorts of suggestions, tentative and stronger. play the recording for students to complete the gaps and see if their guesses are correct. check students answers by having individuals read out the sentences.t: now lets listen to the conversation again. this time, pay attention to the expressions used for making suggestions on the screen. after listening, please complete the function file in ex 7 with the expressions. ok?
