The UN Environment Program and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) released (发布) a report with the new findings. The findings are based on information collected in 170 nations during the past ten years. FAO officials say the world has lost about 1,000 kinds of farm animals because of humans development in the past century. The officials say many other animals are still in danger. They warn that one-third of them are at the risk of disappearing. About two billion people depend at least partly on farm animals to earn money. That is around one third of the world population. FAO officials are concerned about farmers producing enough to feed the worlds growing population. They warn that meat, milk and egg production will need to be increased by more than two times during the next twenty years. FAO officials have gathered information about more than 4,000 kinds of bird and animal populations. 740 of those animals no longer exist. More than 1,300 other animals are said to be endangered or at the high risk of extinction(灭绝). Many of them are very important farm animals. For example, in Madagascar, Renitelo cattle have almost disappeared. In the Philippines, the Banaba chicken is now rare. The report warns that more than 2,000 other animals could disappear within the next twenty years unless action is taken. It says that the greatest threat (威胁) is the export of animals from industrial countries to developing ones. This can lead to replacement of some native animals. As a matter of fact, animals from industrial nations often are considered more productive in developing countries. However, these animals are best for the environment of the areas they come from. They may have a difficult time surviving under extreme conditions. The FAO says having different kinds of animals is a way to protect against loss of animals from bad weather conditions or the spread of diseases. The UN agency is starting a five-year project to help countries better understand the issue.36. What can we learn from the FAOs findings?A. Human activities have a great influence on animals.B. About 1,000 farm animals are out of control now.C. 170 nations should be responsible for extinct animals.D. Agriculture cant develop well because many animals are in danger.37. What will happen if animals continue disappearing?A. More and more people will starve.B. Some people will lack economic resources.C. Farm animals will be peoples enemies.D. A large population will lose their jobs.38. What does the export of animals bring about?A. Exported animals provide productive foods.B. Exported animals create chances for industry.C. Exported animals die from bad conditions.D. Exported animals might leave no space for native ones.39. The text is written mainly _.A. to let people know how to raise native animals B. to call on people to protect exported animalsC. to discover the reasons why animals disappearD. to show people the seriousness of animal extinctionBBesides containing attractive flowers, trees and other plants that beautify the community, eco-friendly rain gardens are healthy for the environment and the people living and working nearby. A rain garden is not very different from a traditional garden. It is just a far more eco-friendly garden. Usually it is built lower than the ground. Rain gardens make smart use of rain and storm water by temporarily holding water from rain and storms and letting it soak slowly into the ground before it runs into streams or enters the public drinking water supply. Thus, a rain garden keeps the water, allowing it to be used as needed by plants in the rain garden, rather than flowing immediately into nearby streams and going unused. The water will soak slowly into the ground within a day or two. This creates an advantage that the rain garden does not allow mosquitoes to breed. This is a simple, attractive, and eco-friendly “green” way to treat storm water. Whats more, planting a rain garden helps reduce pollution and improve the environment. Without using expensive machinery and chemicals, rain gardens remove harmful chemicals in the rainwater and cut down on the amount of pollution reaching streams and rivers by up to 30%. Native plants are recommended for rain gardens because they are more used to the local climate, soil, and water conditions. They may attract local wildlife such as native birds. Water your rain garden immediately after planting and once a week, unless you have had at least an inch of rain during the week. Once the native plants establish the necessary root system, it will require little care. Often, local governments and private businesses develop large rain gardens in their yards and in public parks as a way to improve the environment and solve flooding problems. However, you dont need to be a professional environmental engineer to create a rain garden. As long as youre eco-conscious homeowners, you can help the environment by building smaller rain gardens in your yards.40. Which of the following is the eco-friendly function of rain gardens discussed in Paragraph 4?A. They can keep the rain and storm water.B. They can help reduce the pollution problem. C. They can be healthy for the people around. D. They can make the environment more beautiful.41. One of the main reasons why native plants are recommended is that _.A. they cost less and are much easier to getB. they may attract local wildlife to come C. they require little care from the local gardenersD. they are more used to the local growing conditions.42. We can infer from the passage that after native plants are planted, rain gardens _.A. need little water B. need little care C. need to be watered every day D. neednt be watered if there is at least an inch of rainwater per weekCThe interview is an important event in the job-hunting process, because the 20 or 30 minutes you spend with the interviewer may decide whether or not you get the particular job you want. Therefore, it is important to remember that your purpose during the interview may differ from that of the potential employer. You want to make yourself stand out as a whole person who has personal strengths and should be considered the right person for the job. It is encouraging to know that the interviewers task is not to embarrass you, but to hire the right person for the job.Remember, job-hunting is very competitive. Anything you can do to improve your interview techniques will be to your advantage. The following suggestions may help you land the most important job.Your goal in this interview is to make sure your good points get across. The interviewer wont know them unless you point them out, so try to do this in a factual and sincere manner.Dont say anything bad about your former employers. If you have been fired from a job and the interview asks about it, be honest.Show the interviewer that you are interested in the company by asking questions. Ask about responsibilities, working conditions, promotion opportunities and benefits of the job you are interviewing for.If at some point you decide the interview is not going well, do not let your discouragement show. You have nothing to lose by continuing a show of confidence, and you many have much to gain. It may be real, or it may be a test to see how you react to adverse conditions. Some interviewers may bring up salary early in the interview. At this time, you may indicate that you are more interested in a job where you can prove yourself than a specific salary. This politely passes the question back to the interviewer. If possible, you should negotiate for salary after you have been offered a job and have completed the paperwork.43. To get the job you want, during the interview you should _. A. avoid the interviewers questions that are designed to embarrass you B. remember that you are the best C. make yourself stand out as the right person for the job D. tell yourself that you want to get the job44. If you did not get along with your former employer, you _. A. should tell a lie to the interviewer B. should not speak ill of him C. should refer to him in a factual manner D. should never mention it45. The underlined word “adverse” in the sixth paragraph can be replaced by _. A. difficult B. friendly C. opposite D. different46. The passage is mainly about _. A. how to make your strengths understood B. how to show your interest in the job C. how to be frank and sincere D. how to deal with an interviewDThe oil resources which are left will not last very long. This means that all vehicles such as cars, trains, buses, planes and ships that need oil to work will not be able to run. So it will be necessary to develop a new system of transport which uses a fuel more than oil. Electric vehicles are one possibility. In Britain, most families have at least one car and this car is used every day. It could be that only one person in the family drives the car to work or for shopping. The number of cars on the road which are almost empty perhaps helps to explain why the oil is used up so quickly. The family car is a very useful form of transport but it is also a great waste of energy, especially if it is compared with buses or trains. Much petrol is used by a car which is traveling at 120 kilometers an hour. Clearly, it would be better if there were fewer cars on the road and more speed limits so that the oil which is left will last as long as possible.About 25% of Britains total consumption of energy is domesticit is used only in the home. Just over 20% is used for transport. Most of the energy is used in industry. It is difficult to suggest any possible energy conservation in industry because many of the suggestions would mean that some people would lose their jobs. It is important that industry produces the same amount of products using the same amount of workers.Obviously, conservation is not going to be the answer to the energy crisis. The most it can do is to give more time for a better solution to be found. The more time which is available for new sources of energy to be developed, the better it is because there is still a lot of work to be done in order to find suitable, safe methods of producing energy.47. In Britain, what reason could help to explain why oil is used up very quickly?A. People use cars every day. B. Most families have at least one car.C. Many cars on the road are almost empty. D. Electric vehicles are used.48. Which of the following is true?A. Compared with buses and trains, the family car is useful and can save energy.B. A car driving at the speed of 80 kilometers per hour uses half as much petrol as a car traveling at 160 kilometers per hour.C. It is possible for people to develop vehicles.D. Limitation of the number of cars on the road and their speed will help the oil last longer.49. What does the underlined word “domestic” mean in Paragraph Two?A. For household use. B. On the road. C. Slow driving. D. Fast driving.50. What is a better way to solve the problem of the energy crisis?A. Governments should cut down the number of family cars on the road.B. The speed of vehicles must be limited.C. New sources of energy should be found and developed.D. Factories should cut down on production. We all have goals that we are moving towards and making a great effort to achieve.
