Research tells us that attitudes are learned about racial and ethnic differences from an early age. The attitude of racial superiority inferiority may begin at home by often flourishes through various forms of media. Once the attitude takes root, it permeates the minds of people, and affects the workplace and society as a whole. In this chapter you will read about some of the attitudes and beliefs people have about race and ethnic diversity. You will also have an opportunity to question your beliefs about race. Reading Skill Pracitsed: Signal WordsTo help the reader process information and ideas, good writers use signal words. Signal words consist of one or two small words that connect information and ideas together. Some signal words tell the reader that new or more information is coming up that needs to be processed, while other signal words tell the reader that previous information needs to be referred to in order to process new information. In effect, signal words keep the reader focused on the direction the reading is taking. In this chapter you will learn to identify three groups of signal words and how they are used to connect information in a reading text. Reading skill : Word that Signal ChangeThe signal words used by the writer in this reading signal that new and different information is coming up. The signal words tell the reader that there will be a contrast in ideas from what has already been stated. These signal words alert the reader to pause or read carefully as new information needs to be carefully processed. Notice in the following examples how the words but and although signal “ a constant in thought is coming.”Example 1 I should have spoken to the foreign looking girl in class, but instead I just stared at her. Two different thoughts are presented: first, what should have been done; and second, what actually was done. The small world but becomes a valuable reading signal. Example 2Although we spoke different languages, we could still communicate and had fun together. Again, notice the word although indicates that two thoughts are to be contrasted: first, the language problem that existed and second, how it worked out all right in spite of the language problem . Words that change the direction of thought are: but , although , in spite of , yet, however, while , despite, nevertheless , on the contraryReading Skill: Signal Words that Signal more of the SameThe signal words you identified in Reading One signaled a change of direction in the topic being discussed they made you aware that a change in thought was about to take place and that you should read more slowly to take in the new information. The signal words in this reading tell you that more of the same information is coming up - they signal that more support is going to be presented about the same general topic in the form of examples, details and or explanations.
