(10 points) I think one of the most important factors in 31_ whether or not Ill like a subject is the teacher. The right teacher can make you look 32 _ to a class, just as a bad teacher can make you dread coming to school. 33 _, at my school, the bad ones far outnumber the 34_ teachers, but every so often you come across a gem. Really good teachers are usually popular with most of the kids, and everyone is always trying to get into their classes. To me, a good teacher is someone who likes the subject hes teaching, as well as enjoys working with his students. That type of teacher keeps up with all the 35_ in his field, and makes learning interesting and fun. The teacher I had for music last year was really terrific. He got 36_ to take our class on a trip to an actual recording 37_ . We made a record, and although it was never sold to a 38 _ label, it was played at two school 39 _ as well as a local dance. It may even take off yet- who knows? I learned a lot about music in that class and really had a good time. Most kids think that its important for a teacher to be fair. You can look up to a teacher whos fair, even if you dont get a top grade in the class. At least you know that youve 40 _ whatever grade you 41 _. But a lot of teachers arent fair, and thats true even for some of the ones who think that they are. Several of the teachers dont seem at ease with 42 _ group kids. They try too hard. A few of the white teachers 43 _ Black History Month more rigorously than our black faculty members. They 44 _ stress black pride and so openly gush over their black students that its obvious that theyre 45 _ some of the black kids. Sonia, one of my black friends, says that she hates coming to school in February (Black History Month) because she doesnt enjoy being made the center of 46 _. Other teachers are even worse. These are the ones who seem to be totally 47 _ of how they come across. They have their obvious favorites in class who receive special 48 _. Usually they tend to like the better looking, well-dressed kids, but sometimes they may react to a student personally-like when a teacher is partial to a particular girl because that student 49 _ her daughter. Once a teacher stops seeing his students 50 _, it becomes nearly impossible for him to remain fair and impartial in class. A teacher is supposed to use his skills to help a student learn, instead of using a young person to build up his ego. It is hard for me to respect a teacher, or anyone for that matter, who is unfair. And its equally difficult to learn anything from a person whom you dont respect. Section II Reading Comprehension Test (50 points)Read the following passages and choose the best answers.AA new type of Internet and e-mail fraud is posing major problems for people who rely on the Internet for business and banking transactions. The troublemakers are known as phishers- pronounced fishers. Phishers steal information from innocent people by pretending to be Internet Service Providers or ISPs. These are the people who legally connect you to the Internet and have a right to know your passwords, credit card numbers, and other secret information. Phishers dont have a right to this information, but when unsuspecting Internet users get a message from a phisher, they often give them their secret codes and numbers. The phisher can then create chaos by emptying the victims bank accounts and charging up massive debts on their credit cards. Sometimes phishers go to great lengths to get information, using computer worms to infect many e-mail addresses. In their e-mails, phishers falsely pose as online businesses. Phishers have only turned up in the last two years, but now they have unleashed their criminal activity in North America, Europe, Russia, and parts of Asia. A few of the culprits are malicious students or individuals trying to get rich at the expense of others. However, the FBI and other law enforcement organizations perceive that most phishers are actually part of criminal groups. What was the purpose of this passage?A. To give a warning to the innocents.B. To tell how the police could detect the fraud.C. To describe some criminal and isolated behavior.D. To stop spreading malicious gossip. BThe idea that someone or something can be cursed is as old as culture itself. In fairy tales a curse was called a magic spell and was usually cast by a wicked old witch. Some people believe that curses can be placed on others by casting spells, or by chanting certain words. A curse is said to bring bad luck or even death to the person it has been put on. In real life a person may accidentally have had a series of misfortunes, and he will be said to have been cursed. The saying that luck, good or bad, comes in threes is still believed by Western-educated people. There is, however, no scientific evidence that curses have been the cause of any harm.Ancient peoples were afraid to walk under ladders because they thought that gods lived in the triangle-shaped space underneath. For someone to walk through a sacred place like this was very disrespectful to the gods. This is because early Christians considered the ladder a symbol of wickedness. Remember that a ladder had led Christ to his death. Today some superstitious people avoid walking under ladders for fear of bad luck. The thought that walking under ladders brings about bad luck also exists among those who are not superstitious because some clumsy person at the top might drop something on them! One more superstition is about a horseshoe. Have you ever been told that its lucky to find a horseshoes? This belief comes from 4th-century Greece. A horseshoe is crescent-shaped like the new moon, which was a symbol of good luck. Also horseshoes are made of iron, which was thought to be able to keep evil spirits away. A horseshoe nailed over a doorway supposedly kept evil spirits from entering the house. For extra protection, it was said the horseshoe must be fixed with the ends pointing up, or all the good luck would drain out of it. Horseshoes are hard to find today, but good luck still keeps coming into ordinary families. The question why some people are still superstitious could be explained by the fact that modern science and technology is not so advanced as to be able to account for everything in the boundless universe.56. A curse is _.A. an old culture B. a word, a phrase or a sentenceC. a bad witch D. a magic technology57. A curse is believed to _.A. bring good luck and make a lot of money B. make people keep away from harmC. bring sickness or misfortune D. be first used by the Egyptians58. Walking under ladders means _ to ancient people.A. you might be injured by something falling down B. you walk through gods bedroomC. you dont show respect to gods D. you make gods ill and unhealthy59. All the stories about the horseshoe are _.A. true but unbelievable B. strange but believableC. a result of superstition D. for those who ride horses60. From the passage we know _.A. people dont know the universe well enoughB. cursing is as old as the earth itselfC. good luck doesnt exist any longer because horseshoes are hard to find nowadaysD. modern science and technology is so advanced today that nothing is unknown to humans C Thinking about going to a casino to play roulette and win a lot of money?
